“That’s about preserving yourself by not exposing anything about yourself. It’s about kind of lying in a sea of lies and using that as a preservative so you don’t have to expose yourself and become worn out by the realities of living.”

Is that based on personal experience?

“Not so much lies. I didn’t lie, but I never exposed myself. I never showed anyone what I was really feeling, and I wrote ‘Tuna In The Brine’ after I decided, ‘I’m gonna live’.”

“It’s about mindgames I play with myself, it’s about a front you present to yourself when you’re on certain medications. When I was on anti-depressants I was on these pills that decreased anxiety quite dramatically; I felt like people were seeing a sedated representation of me. I sometimes hear interviews back from the time and go, ‘fuck, I can’t remember being there’.

I was looking for something that represented coming out of the other side of [me] presenting that false person. I was thinking of something that really shines to me; I was thinking of the sun, I was looking at the skies, then I thought about how when I was a little kid and opening a can of tuna and looking down and they were nice and shiny - they were so sparkly. ‘Tuna In The Brine’ - yeah, that really represents a time to shine. I also thought it was interesting that they were most shiny when they were dead.”
