hello kny/demon slayer fans! i would really appreciate if you guys would use the canon, modified version of tanjiro’s earrings when drawing fanart/merch for him! 

the rising sun flag is known throughout east and south asia as an imperialistic war time flag and it was used during WW2 to commit cultural genocide, mass ra/pe and forced prostitution of hundreds of thousands of women and children, and massacring innocent civilians by the japanese imperial army. 

i know many of you want to use the “most canon” version of tanjiro’s earrings, but it is a very controversial flag that has very serious and hurtful implications behind it. i implore you all to read up on japanese war crimes as they STILL affect modern japan’s relationship with south korea and other countries.

To @goblinhorns, I quite frankly don’t care if a flag is glorifying the flag. As an Okinawan, looking at that flag leaves a bitter taste in my mouth reminds me that my people were stripped of our culture and that my family and family’s friends were killed during the Battle of Okinawa as a scapegoat for Japan. And that we can’t even not have it It reminds me of the countless atrocities and deaths of millions of people in the Pacific, of the ways they were chemically tested on, stripped of their cultures, forced labor, sexual slaves, and maimed by Japan.

It also reminds me of the time that Shoichi Chibana, burnt the Rising Sun Flag flag that was flying in Okinawa and was sentenced to prison for one year.

He was sentenced to one year for burning a flag of a country that colonized our people. The flag itself is a glorification of the act of Japan’s imperialism. 

The current flag that exists as the national flag existed for hundreds of years, as well so I also support it being used (though, I do agree it also has its history in the act of imperialism in terms of visual representation). The fact that the manga artist knows the history of the flag, or does at least, to some extent and their choice to make it an artistic choice makes me question them a little.

Most Hanafuba do not look like this and there are infact Hanafuba that have depicted the rising sun symbol or have been inspired by it.

The original Manga design is actually even worse since the colored version even made the lines red:

That being said, the anime did improve it a bit by curving the lines at the end to make it apper more like flower petals, these details sadly get lost sometimes it appears judging by diffrent anime screenshots I have seen.

That being said, I think you should go with the altered design since, even if it is a honest misunderstanding and the resemblance to the rising sun flag is simply a coincidence that wasn’t intentional, it’s still there and not everyone will have context for this show or it supposedly being a Hanafuba.

Especially for merch you should really consider going for a altered design, even if not the canon altered one above you can just stylize it yourself to still resemble a hanafuba, here are some examples that show how little alterations already make it look more like flowers:

This designer made the petal shapes a lot more noticeable by simply moving the patern just a bit and rounding the corners a lot more

This one too managed to avoid the uncomfortable rising sun image by stylizing the petal shape a lot more and making it look more clearly like a flower.

It’s better to alter the design then to unintentionally hurt people. Especially since I saw actual rising sun flag earings being sold by people inspired by this anime.

(Like I didn’t even have to type it, it’s fucked up, don’t do that shit people)
