There are several kinds of "normal" that people might mean when they say "normal". There's the "normal" where a thing isn't particularly unual, you might be surprised to hear that it's happened to someone you know, but it's not so unusual that you would question whether they're sure that it was that, and not something else.
Then there's the "normal" that means that the thing predictably Just Happens, nobody has to do anything wrong or weird to make it be like that. It's normal in the sense of being a morally neutral, expectable thing.
Then there's the "everyone poops" level of normal. For the kind of things that are literally so normal that it would be really fucking weird if there was somebody who has never encountered it.
There are people on Tumblr who love acting like they don't understand this.
We have got to stop framing our oppression in ways that promote the idea that other people cannot relate to our struggles. Not only does it isolate comrades in the struggle, it actively diminishes recognition of other struggles--often including those even more horrific than what we are at risk of. And this happens especially between Gay and Black struggles.
"when have straight people ever had to check what states were safe for them?" Sundown towns are still a thing. Starlight tours. What states have abortion access? What states have open carry? What states have stand your ground? What states have 3-strike rules? Women, people of color, disabled people, immigrants, and more have had to be abundantly cautious where they travel to. Straight trans people have much more travel risk right now than gay cis people.
It's a new iteration of the same tired question: "imagine if straight people weren't allowed to marry" interracial marriage in the US is younger than my parents. We disgrace people of color by forgetting their history and contemporary struggles, and we abandon queer people of color, Black queer people, by segmenting their overlapping fights.

Call it Rich Asshole Syndromeβthe tendency to distance yourself from people with whom you have a large wealth differential.
One of those SAW traps where the victim is a mother of several small children. She wakes up in an enclosed room, with her children close to her, and she is informed that while she was unconscious, she was poisoned. The antidote is right there in the room. She cannot give it to herself, and her children cannot assist her in giving it to her. Nearby, within reach, literally in the same room, are other adults, who can give her the antidote, with no pain or cost to themselves. Her task is to ask another adult to help her give herself the antidote.
If she asks for the antidote, she will be assisted with it, and everyone is free to go, alive and relatively unharmed. If she doesn't ask for help, or tries to make her children help her instead of asking another adult, she will die, and her children will either die also, or be maimed for life.
