Wait. Enlightened idea of Karl (collapse postulate personification) being genderfluid like his gender collapses into the eigenstate of being a guy one day while measuring himself. Determining the probability of what gender she'll collapse into via the Born rule.

On that note, I think I'll integrate the Born rule into their characterization instead of having it as a separate character. There's an opportunity for clever wordplay due to Max Born's surname coinciding with the word "born" that I'll use.

On the subject of personifying the actual formalism...I still need to figure out what to do with the Born rule if I have the Schrodinger Equation and Collapse Postulate as a criminal duo haha.

I also need to say that it is very difficult trying to figure out designs for personifications of pieces to the formalism that read well...

I've been working on Karl (Collapse Postulate personification) and Erwin (Schrodinger Equation personification) recently who are my funny crime duo who aspire to be cat burglars, but I do want to say that they'll be taken more seriously in act 2. They're meant to be initially comedy relief recurring thieves with Erwin as the straight (not that way) man to Karl's funny man. However, they do ultimately turn around since they're personifications of abstract concepts learning how to be human too like the detectives.

Reworked the case of the measurement problem as well where...the owners of the house they broke into are away for dinner and they left their cat at home. Under the cut for content warnings relating to pet death:

Copenhagen is going to be characterized akin to a well-intentioned parent but also unintentionally hurts people and thus left wondering why his kids don't talk to him anymore...Wild thing to say about the Copenhagen interpretation, but he does have an interpersonal measurement problem.

Before anybody asks...Yes, I have watched the film adaptation of Copenhagen by Michael Frayn (I need to read the actual play) and read Pamela Zoline's "The Heat Death of the Universe" hehe. If you're looking for pieces I consider masterclass in physics metaphors, then both of these have my recommendation as they're incredibly inspirational for Quantum Detective Agency.

It is genuinely so difficult for Watanabe to hate anybody because of their background in academia and philosophy...He has to be open-minded (even to outrageous takes) and he always tries to understand other people. Even with criminals, he'll treat them like students to establish his authority and also because he genuinely hopes that they can learn to change for the better.

HOWEVER, the exception is people who use science for their own self-benefit where it's easier for them to start becoming a hater. It's both because they believe that science should be for the sake of humanity (based on Satosi Watanabe's supposed anti-war stance here...I do not have another source as I am not proficient in Japanese) and also because they have a more petty reason that their autistic special interest is being misrepresented.

(For a slightly unrelated note, I am adding more references to the namesake physicists in my characters as fun details to include hehe.)

So, I snapped and decided yeah I'm going to make Quantum Detective Agency about literary theory as much as it is about philosophy. Lucky for me, I am an English-Philosophy double major. I've been working on some writing for my detectives and I've decided to really play into the metafictional elements already there...I feel like metafiction is a genre that's perfect for interpretations of quantum mechanics and I mentioned that there's a parallel with the issue with interpreting texts before I believe? (I may be having a false memory haha) Not to mention, philosophical fiction and metafiction go very nicely together!

Detective fiction is a bit tricky to write since I was worrying about the cases being too generic admittedly.....However, the metafiction direction will hopefully make the cases thought provoking even if they can be formulaic like a locked room mystery. The cases have always been vehicles for philosophical ramblings (because philosophy is my unfortunate special interest), but I want to also investigate (heh) fiction-making too!

Infodump oops. Anyway, I am in the process of figuring out how to connect the personified interpretation lore of Quantum Detective Agency to the issue about the quantum to classical shift. For those who do not know about this lore detail, the interpretations of quantum mechanics were given human forms to learn about the world. (Though, only Copenhagen knows about that fact)

You might see where I'm going with this. Go, quantum decoherence. My ass...needs to lock in on learning about quantum decoherence (OUGH.) and I only just read the introduction to Quantum Decoherence by Maximilian Schlosshauer, but here is a quote pull:

The key insight in addressing the problem of the quantum-to-classical transition was first spelled out almost fifty years ago by Zeh [1], and it gave birth to the theory of quantum decoherence, sometimes also called dynamical decoherence or environment-induced decoherence [1–9]. The insight is that realistic quantum systems are never completely isolated from their environment, and that when a quantum system interacts with its environment, it will in general become rapidly and strongly entangled with a large number of environmental degrees of freedom.

I will speak more when I feel confident in not misrepresenting quantum decoherence, but a topic explored in Quantum Detective Agency is learning how to be "human" (and not doing so alone) so there's the connection with "quantum systems interacting with the environment."

Regarding all of the younger Dr. Watanabe stuff....that's relevant to Act 2 where a big part of their character is that they're regressing to the worst state of mind they had (their early 20s). Which, their mental regression also meant to reflect the backwards evolving state vector in the double inferential state vector formalism.
