a really easy way to speak needed truth and hold the Church to account if you are a Catholic who believes that we should be working to make amends for past institutional harms and who wants to continue to advocate for inclusion of queer people in our faith communities is to write letters to your bishops if you’re in the US and to the USCCB in general if you’re outside it (or within it and you want to take things further than your local bishop) protesting the recent total ban on gender affirming care by Catholic-owned hospitals, doctor’s offices, and insurance companies

in many places a Catholic healthcare provider is the only option. there are documented cases of hormone prescriptions requested by non-Catholics and prescribed by non-Catholic doctors being denied because the individual’s insurance company is Catholic-owned. there are cases of surgeries being stopped minutes before they’re set to happen because a priest had a last minute morality check.

if the Church is going to be the only game in town for healthcare in parts of the US, it must either fully disclose in advance all procedures and medications that it will not cover AND ensure that non-Catholics can receive referrals and transportation to facilities and care networks that will meet their needs or it must provide care equally to all that meets the standards offered by secular hospitals. this is, to me, not optional. if we are to be as Christ our duty to the sick and wounded is to minister to them completely. we must be better than the secular world, not worse. it’s possible to facilitate care for our trans neighbors and friends and fellow parishioners without essentially forcing detransition in places where no other healthcare is available. I’m appalled, and have been writing, and will be continuing to do so. I’m hesitant to join forces with trans advocacy organizations who are more stridently anti-Catholic, but I don’t think that this decision should be simply accepted and left uncommented on by queer and queer ally Catholics.
