Madonna of Montevergine, also known as Slave Mama, is a Black Madonna icon located at the Sanctuary of Montevergine in Mercogliano, Italy. Slave Mama has long been revered by the queer community due to an instance dating back to 1252 when two men were making a pilgrimage to the sanctuary, only to be tied to a tree and left to die in the freezing temperatures for being lovers. In their time of distress, they prayed to Mary and before them a bright ray of light appeared, melting the snow around them and freeing them from a grim death.
