The lovely oracleether requested Ike and Ranulf traveling in a faraway town and wow I’m sorry I don’t know where this came. Guess I was just thinking about how Ike would not be picky about foreign food… Like he’d eat whatever as long as it sort of resembled cooked animal flesh but Ranulf might be a little bit more discerning.
≈ ”Ranulf, you're taking a break. And since it's summer, that means pool time!" he bellowed with raucous laughter, dressed in his swimming shorts, taking the poor cat with him as he jumped into the castle pool.
"Skrimir, please don’t—!"
And again, for some number of times he couldn’t remember in the last few days, he was soaking wet. Skrimir hadn’t even given him time to change before pulling him into the pool—not that that would have made much of a difference, but it was the thought that counted, right?
"Not again…”
There have GOT to be better ways of taking a break than this, he thought. Personally, Ranulf rather fancied a catnap in the sun right about now.
Skrimir surfaced in the pool, taking in a deep breath to maintain flotation. “Sorry Ranulf,” he chuckled, “I got a little carried away.” he said, putting Ranulf onto his belly. “If you want, you can nap on me while I float. ‘s mostly what I do anyway.” he grinned, floating near the edge of the pool for his smaller friend and advisor to get off and change. “By the way, firm or soft?” he asked as the cat ran off for clothes.
"Quite all right," he sighed, dragging himself out of the pool like a… well, wet cat. "That’s why I’m here, isn’t it? Anyway, I’ve got to get out of these wet clothes. Try not to have too much fun while I’m gone, okay?”
It didn’t take long for Ranulf to scurry off to his quarters in the castle and throw off his wet clothes in favor of some swimming trunks (a gift, incidentally, from Skrimir). At least it would be easier to dry himself off this way.
Back at the pool, Skrimir was right where he’d left him. His first intention had been to refuse the earlier offer, but… royalty or not, sometimes Ranulf just enjoyed letting him indulge in some of his more harmless requests. He smiled at the big lion fondly. “Thanks for the offer, Skrimir. I think I might just take you up on that. Soft work for you?”
a hairy introduction (Ranulf & Volug)
It was hot. Too hot, even for Ranulf, who had spent a good portion of his life in the muggy, humid forests of Gallia. The heat out in the desert was dry and gritty, the sand sticking to his paws and making his fur stiff. It was not a pleasant feeling. He wondered vaguely how the dogs had managed to survive out here, in this unbearable, scorching heat. But then again, they were the mighty wolf tribe, and while Ranulf was thrilled at the possibility of having a united laguz population once again, there were just some things he didn't quite get about them...
Maybe that was why Skrimir had sent him as the sole member of this "diplomatic committee." Sometimes Ranulf forgot that he was something of an anomaly among his people when it came to verbal negotiations.
But none of that really mattered now, as he scrambled and stumbled for cover behind large rocks and ancient, ruined structures as a group of jeering beorc lobbed fireballs at him. They'd found him by the base of the mountains at the edge of the dunes, waiting for his escort, and by the time Ranulf remembered that he was still in cat form, they were already screeching profanities and attempting to fry him to a crisp. The war might've done much to ease the tension between beorc and laguz, but the new ideas hadn't quite reached the citizens out at the edges of Begnion and Daein just yet.
Ranulf tried to poke his head out from behind his current hiding spot, only to nearly be hit in the face by another Elfire spell. He was hesitant to kill beorc to begin with, and there were just too many of them for him to take on alone. He grumbled to himself irritably. If only his escort had been here on time...

[ EYY gonna go do some late-night hangouts so I'll get to stuff either later tonight or tomorrow afternoon! ]
≈ It was just a strong breeze that bowled the laguz into the lake, no wind magic involved whatsoever. "Strange weather we're having, wouldn't you say?" He made himself look somewhat innocent.
Ranulf was really getting tired of this water thing. A wet cat was not a happy cat.
"Very funny, Soren," he deadpanned, climbing out of the lake. Even untransformed, he looked as pathetic as the real deal. "Are you going to help me dry off, or am I going to have to just shake it out like a dog right here?"
"And here I thought that cats liked giving themselves baths." Soren replied, letting some flames dance between his fingers. "I suppose I can help you dry off though…"
Singing his tail was just so tempting, but perhaps it’d be just a little too cruel after their recent ‘reconciliation’… If what had happened back at the Keep could even be called that… So Soren instead sent a fierce breeze the cat’s way, enough to dry off his fur, and make it fluff up in a ridiculous manner. Bowling him over was an added bonus.
"Very funny indeed." He even managed a small smile.
"Not when someone pushes you into a blasted lake," Ranulf grumbled, though his eyes widened a little when the flames appeared in Soren’s hands; and he really didn’t like the way the mage was eyeing his tail. He knew Soren had a problem with laguz, but he wasn’t really going to do that, was he…?
His fears were only slightly eased when Soren elected instead to blast him with wind—right into the ground. Ranulf thanked whatever gods were in charge that he had the decency to keep him away from the water this time. And also for the fact that he decided not to use fire, after all.
"Well, I’m glad you find this all very amusing," he huffed, picking himself up and brushing the dirt from his clothes. The damn mage was smiling, of course. Better than the alternative. ”Because I’m really not looking forward to taming this later.”

≈ "...SWIMMING!" he shouts, leaping into the castle's pool with the captain in tow, completely drenching both of them.
"Mordecai, wait—!!"
Too late. He was already dripping wet.
"… Well. That’s… one way to go swimming, I guess. As long as you’re having fun, big guy."

"Good to see you again, Ranulf. And I must thank you again for your hospitality and kindness while I was in Gallia." --Lorazieh
"Ah, King Lorazieh. It’s good to see you well—Prince Reyson and the hawk king are worrying constantly for you, you know?" He bowed slightly, just enough to not make a fool of himself with the tail and all. "Of course, it was my pleasure. If you ever need an escort on our soil, give me a holler, won’t you? I’d be honored. But how are King Tibarn and your royal children these days?"
"Tibarn is…amazed by the amount of paperwork that being the leader of three Bird tribes got him," Lorazieh chuckled. "He’s very glad for Reyson’s assistance. Other than that, he’s doing just fine. And on top of that, he hasn’t killed Naesala yet, much to Leanne’s delight. Things are going well for us. And you? I hear Prince—King?—Skrimir was quite a handful."
"Ah, paperwork, the enemy of laguz officials everywhere!" Ranulf joked, thinking of his own king and the frustration therein (on both accounts). "But it's good to hear they're managing. Honestly, I'm surprised about the raven king—oh, but I guess he's not the raven king anymore, huh? Tibarn seemed pretty steaming mad about that whole affair, even with the blood pact. Can't blame him, though. We all were, before we found out the truth."
Ranulf trailed off, not wanting to stay on that train of conversation. He wasn't entirely sure if his own personal feelings about Naesala aligned properly with the current politics. "Yeah, he's a royal handful, all right, especially now that he's king. But I see a lot of promise in him, too. He learned a lot from the war, and yeah, it nearly killed us all, but it did some good in the end. And I—"
Suddenly he stopped, realizing how insensitive he must sound to the heron king. "Ah, I'm terribly sorry, Your Highness. I know the herons are sensitive to chaotic times like that... I wasn't thinking..."

"Well, well, if it isn't Ike's little staff officer! I see you're getting a lot of... /attention/ these days. Haven't snapped yet, have we? Need me to help chase them off?" -purrfectblue
"…Ranulf…" Great, a beast. Soren tried not to let it show on his face. At the very least this was one that was tolerable, but the mage still stiffened considerably.
"I can handle myself perfectly fine, your assistance is not necessary, pussycat." He turned to walk away.
Maybe he was just being paranoid, but Soren swore felt that familiar presence approaching even before he heard the footsteps. He kept his nose determinedly in his book, but his eyes stopped moving across the page when Ranulf began to speak— he had enough respect at least to hear the beasts words. For a long moment after the other had fallen silent though, he considered not bothering to reply… In the end, he had just a little bit more respect for the cat than that.
"I didn’t do it for you or your kind." He mumbled, eyes still trained on his book. "I did it because Ike asked me to, and nothing more…" Soren knew he could’ve left it at that, let his voice trail off and simply bided his time until the other left… But somehow that didn’t feel right. Not because he cared about what a beast thought of him, but because Ike had told him many times that he needed to let go of his harshness for laguz— he needed to move on… Easier said than done of course… but maybe forcing himself to give a stray cat the time of day was a good start. Soren lifted his gaze from his book to meet Ranulf’s.
"…. I should not have spoken so harshly to you earlier." He began. Oh how it made his skin crawl to admit it, but he did his best to keep it out of his tone, "…Stray cat…For all that the beasts have done, you at least, have proven to be worth some respect… And I…" Oh by the goddess he should’ve kept his mouth shut, Soren looked away, his hand curling into a fist, "…I apologize…"
It was almost as if Ranulf’s eyebrows had shot up clean off of his forehead when he heard what was coming out of Soren’s mouth. He certainly wasn’t expecting such a sincere attempt at reconciliation. It stunned him into a brief silence.
"Of course," he said. "I understand, it was just your job. And I won’t question why you feel the way you do, but… thanks. And apology accepted, all the same."
He watched as the other continued to struggle with his own words. When they’d first met, there had always been something a little… off about Soren that Ranulf had never quite been able to put his finger on. He’d dismissed it as just an attitude problem and general racism, but soon it had clicked. Ranulf would be lying if he ever said he’d never actively avoided the tactician during the Mad King’s War (other than for the obvious reasons). Meeting Ike had changed him for the better, and seeing Soren trying to overcome that same barrier, given how much more he’d been through, gave him a little hope.
Of course, he'd probably never hear that story.
"You know…" Ike was right about you. You’ve changed. Slightly. But it’s progress. "Actually, never mind."
"Well, well, if it isn't Ike's little staff officer! I see you're getting a lot of... /attention/ these days. Haven't snapped yet, have we? Need me to help chase them off?" -purrfectblue

"I can handle myself perfectly fine, your assistance is not necessary, pussycat." He turned to walk away.
"Didn’t deserve it is an understatement." Soren bit his lip to keep from saying it aloud, instead choosing to turn away and start walking once more. He thought about simply ignoring the cat, ahh but Ike would be upset with him, and as much as he hated beasts, Ranulf had at least proven worthy of respect…. If only slightly.
"It’s not my concern where a stray cat chooses to stay the night." He eventually said, glancing over his shoulder. "But Mist always did like feeding the animals for free, and surely the others would be pleased to have you." They were practically on the doorstep to the Keep anyways, turning Ranulf away now would just be cruel. Oh how he wanted to.
But he gritted his teeth and stepped inside like a good host, and sure enough, everyone greeted their temporary pet warmly. Soren made his way to the kitchens to scrounge a snack the moment they were distracted. Maybe he could say he was allergic to cats if they asked.
Ranulf was glad for the fact that Soren had turned his back, because even he couldn’t hide the smoldering anger that surfaced in a reflexive twitch of his tail. He’d forgotten how caustic Soren could be when he was particularly miffed. But that wasn’t the way to improve relations with the beorc, and he respected the little tactician for all the brilliant ideas he had poured into the war effort on behalf of the laguz.
At least he had more self-control than his sub-commanders. Soren would’ve been in pieces at the hands—well, claws—of Lyre or Lethe by now.
"Thanks," he said instead, with genuine relief. The short walk to the keep was spent in silence.
Whatever unpleasantness remained in the pit of Ranulf’s stomach from Soren’s earlier comments was immediately eased when he was greeted warmly by the rest of the Greil Mercenaries. Mist and Titania were gracious, as always, and even the brothers seemed happy to see him. The redheaded archer was nowhere to be seen, but that didn’t surprise him much at all.
It was a few hours later that Ranulf noticed Soren had been avoiding him completely—again, not a surprise, but…
With his acute sense of smell, it wasn’t hard to find the mage hiding in the far corners of the keep.
"Listen," Ranulf began, lingering in the doorway. "I know I make you uneasy, and I know you’re not fond of the laguz. But I just wanted to say that I really do appreciate everything you did for us, little as I’m sure that means to you." He chuckled. "Also, Skrimir made me promise to check up on you while I was in Crimea, so… anyway. I’ll make sure to stay out of your way while I’m here, and I won’t overstay my welcome. Sound fair?"
