Genuinely think the most underrated skill in writing is knowing when a scene is done. not perfect. done. there's a version of every scene that keeps going because you're scared to leave it, scared it wasn't enough, scared the next scene is harder. so you keep adding. one more line. one more beat. one more little moment. and the scene dies from it. it needed to end three paragraphs ago and you just kept talking because you didn't want to face what came next. same as real life actually.

thiiissss... right here. I cant even tell you how many times I write in little notes like "[transition here]" while writing as a way tell myself to STFU and move on lol

TADC: The Last Act is really good if you actually care about the story instead of whatever headcanons you've decided to base your whole personality around

best case scenario Digital Circus gets remembered in a similar way as Steven Universe: a show that was Really Fucking Good and had nuanced characters and interesting things to say, but the audience wasn't quite ready for it and it imploded into a discourse ball. four years from now I expect to see lesbians drawing Jax like she's a renaissance muse the same way people still draw Pearl or Lapis

"if Jax is a trans woman she's still an abuser so she's bad representation so the show is transphobic" you're an idiot. you want your blorbos to be perfect ideal angels, I want my blorbos to be realistic, nuanced, flawed human beings, we are not the same. I LIKE that she's messy and fucked up and problematic, I think it's a realistic depiction of how a lot of repressed and traumatized trans women are. I think the show goes to great lengths to explore how and why she is the way she is, and to evoke sympathy for this kind of person. it doesn't excuse her actions but it does make them understandable. and I think the fact women like that deserve sympathy is an idea worth stating and worth shouting. yes she's a bully and she hurt everyone around her and that may never change. she still deserves sympathy.

I kinda like the idea of jax becoming a cautionary tale of what happens when you let dysphoria and self hatred eat you alive. I've met so many of him IRL in my own circles. I think people need to hear it. I need more characters who eat themselves alive and actually have to suffer the consequences of not choosing to be better. It's pretty refreshing to see a different and nuanced take on dysphoria and how it doesn't always manifest the way you would expect.

If nothing else, you have to give Gooseworx and the Amazing Digital Circus crew credit because they're all very online people and 100% had to know that making a show whose basic premise is "what if a bunch of people who are all fundamentally a bit exhausting to hang out with were forced to hang out with each other at gunpoint" was a fandom discourse bomb waiting to happen, and they did it anyway.

To add to this: sometimes the curtains are blue because its of narrative importance, sometimes the curtains are blue because the character likes blue but that's not important, sometimes the curtains are blue because it enhances the shot, provides depth to the visuals, doesn't clash with wardrobe, sometimes the curtains are blue because that's what the set designer decided, sometimes the curtains are blue because they're fuckin' blue. JUST BECAUSE THE CURTAINS ARE BLUE DOESN'T MEAN ITS MEANINGFUL. Not to be old man on tumblr, I've been on this website almost as long as its been around and this is not a new issue. Y'all need to do more learning on the importance of media literacy and analysis outside of your own confirmation bias. Just because you want it to be true doesn't mean it is (which is fine, that's what Fan Media is for!). Take courses, read books, listen to interviews, watch Youtube deep dives (I'm being realistic here) about literary plot devices, cinemotography's role in telling stories, costuming design, set design, dialogue and body language (especially if the media is in a different culture than your own!). These are so foundational to really understanding the message and story of the media you're consuming. ALSO ITS NEAT BECAUSE THEN YOU GET TO SEE EVEN MORE LITTLE EASTER EGGIES THAT THE CREATORS HID.
