an empathetic hot take on why, while i love lapis, i don’t think her future character development should be a straightforward redemption arc. 

I was watching it after it came out with a friend and I heard that something horrible happened to pearl so that entire scene I covered my face and was like “nooo I can’t watch” (apparently she like…. went swimming at this waterfall place but wasn’t a very strong swimmer and feel down the waterfall and her gem shattered against the rocks below). also garnet was split up somehow and jasper came back as a villain and kidnapped ruby and the entire time I was like “wait how the fuck did she pop her own bubble and why isn’t she corrupted anymore?” like, not even nad that they were playing her as this two dimensional cartoon villain but because the logic behind it made no sense.

The reason the way SU portrays butch/femme characters bothers me, is because I was hoping SU wouldn't fall into the trap of small and skinny = girly, big and muscular = masculine, equating those ideas with butchness and femmeness, with zero nuance or awareness of butch/femme culture. Broadly speaking, I was hoping SU would challenge this notion, since Pearl and Peridot seem to experiment with butchness, while Ruby was shown wearing a wedding dress in the leaks.

One of the reasons I cling to femme/futch Jasper is because she's ambiguous enough to go either way, but I see in her the potential for SU challenging popular notions of butchness and femmeness by allowing her to be big and beefy AND femme. I identify a lot with her. I've spent a long time grappling with my deep voice and other "masculine" traits while trying to be femme. So I guess you could say that Jasper, in all of her eight foot rough-and-ready glory slipping on a backless gown and red lipstick and rocking that shit, is an image I keep close to my heart. I'll emphasise that this is my interpretation based on very personal factors, and it in no way invalidates alternative viewpoints.

I’m sorry to kick off everyone’s Monday morning on a sad note, but it’s been brought to my attention that Tumblr user and fandom artist @catharticaagh aka @venusshuttrap (nsfw) has passed away last Saturday, June 2. A mutual friend of ours Googled her name after not hearing back from her and her obituary came up in the results. Unfortunately we don’t know what happened or how she died. She was in her first year of grad school and would’ve turned 24 this August.
