Howdy-do bookclubbers, And LONG TIME NO SEE!!! To make a long story short school was kicking my ass the last number of months so I didn't have time to make book club posts (let alone read comics or have. literally any hobbies). The good news is that now I'm on summer break which means I have basically infinite time on my hands and no excuse not to catch back up! So with a whopping 16 comics to post about expect to see a lot of these posts from me for the next few weeks. Starting back up today with a classic, Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold by Carl Barks (his very first duck comic)!!!
Okay so I'm reading from my nice physical copy of Carl Barks Library #1, which hasn't been scanned to my awesome and SUPER LEGAL comic reading website for some reason (even though it came out months ago). -AAAND that's Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold! If you're thinking this post ended abruptly, the story ended pretty abruptly too. I was expecting some kind of twist at the end where the treasure would be fake or Yellow Beak would be a scam artist or something but no, I'm pretty sure they just... got the treasure and went home? Which is VERY surprising for Donald, that he actually won anything. I guess it's nice that in his first Barks adventure he got to win a little!
Anyways, not much to say in reflection of this story other than that it was pretty cute and fun, and honestly despite the longer page-count it never felt excessively slow. The pacing was pretty tight the whole time. Definitely worth a read if you can get a copy!

It's very upsetting that Drake built a costume for Gosalyn to fit her little 9 year old body, despite it being 20 years since she last disappeared. He's so stuck it kills me, this whole au is beyond devastating.
It's also interesting that Darkwarrior truly believed that if Gosalyn were to show up that she would be on board with what he was doing. Gosalyn is one of the kindest and most thoughtful characters of the whole cast-Drake should know that, and yet he's so deluded that he completely forgot that about her. I suppose its because Dwar himself doesn't think he's doing 'wrong'.
Anyways, after the events of Time and Punishment, in a sort of 'redemption' au, Dw and Lp reunite and Lp goes to clear out Darkwarriors headquarters because they need to get rid of that stuff before the public find it. Launchpad finds the costume and is really forced to have a moment where he realises how badly this whole Gosalyn thing took a toll on his mental health. (As if it wasn't clear before but)
Like obviously Launchpad never left St Canard and he watched Dwar police the city and do unforgivable things, but he didn't get to see this sort of thing.

I'm adding context under the cut, but please vote first! I want to know what your instinctual responses are. Feel free to let me know your reasoning!
Disney comics are reprinted & produced all over the world (especially in Europe and Brazil - not so much in the US anymore) and they have specific ways in which they are localised. Most of those changes are fairly standard (like translating character names), but one notable thing is that - despite pretty consistently still setting the comics in the US - they often localise the money bin as well.
So when famous duck comic artist Don Rosa said this, it really rubbed me the wrong way:
I've always assumed it was ordinary pocket change, because that's what it looks like to me. I'm used to euros, which are made of metal that looks like gold or copper. Making the coins silver would be weirder!
(An additional note on the colour differences: back in the day, publishers only got the lineart. That meant that each publisher did the colouring in-house and developed their own standards. Even now, with comic artwork shared as digital files, most publishers will still recolour the characters to make them better fit the style their readers know.)
Nothing is still quite as funny to me as paperinik enjoyers trying SO hard to fit pk i into DuckTales (2017). like all the time it was like here's how the duck avenger can still win
