when Della comes back, Louie, trying to cover all his bases and watch out for all the angles, suggests it's really a trick or a curse from Magica, which does make you think about why Scrooge hid all information about Della. worth considering, other than his own shame, grief, and anger [not to mention that it's a useful device for propelling the plot in s1], is that he is a man with a lot of enemies. if someone with the right resources and malevolence realized he'd lost someone very close to him as a result of his own actions.... well. that's a definitive Achilles' heel, so it makes sense to hide it as thoroughly as possible.
but imagine if magica had used Della's disappearance against him at some point in the past. if someone had led him to believe she'd really come home, only for it to be a trick to get his guard down and attack him from within. if somebody used her face to destroy him.
of course scrooge would overcome it and take them down, because he's scrooge mcduck. but god. if he opened the door and saw della standing there with open arms and he flinched from her instead of running to her. if he hesitated because the last time he saw her standing in front of him like that it was an illusion that almost killed him. if Della came home and saw her uncle for the first time in nearly eleven years, expecting to be hugged and fawned over and teased and loved, and instead his first move was to shield her own children from her because magica was still out there somewhere and he couldn't risk being wrong again.
