“Don’t get distracted, handsome. We’re here to race, so keep your eyes on the road.”
“C’mon! You’re talking to a pro here! I know how to handle the curves like an expert!”
“~Oh~” Rouge lowered her eyelids. “ I didn't know you and pinky got frisky.”
Sonic's eyes bulged at the insinuation.
“SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!” A yell came from the middle of the line up.
Sonic’s face drained of color.
Everyone looked back to see Amy storming up past the cars.
“Ooooooooh! Looks like a lovers quarrel.” Eggman taunted.
Amy summoned her hammer and threw it. Destroying the hood of the evil doctor's car.
“Hey! Doesn't she get disqualified for this!?!” Eggman yelled up as a pit crew came to cart off the broken vehicle.
“N-now Amy!” Sonic hopped out of his car and held his hands up trying to placate the raging pink hedgehog. “You and I both know we haven’t done anything like that!”
“Then whose curves are you handling!?”
As she came closer. Sonic dropped to his knees and held his clasped hands above his head. Offering himself as a sacrifice to Amy’s anger. The shadow of her hammer loomed over him.
“No one's Ames I promise! I’m sorry I shouldn't have said any of that. It was stupid and idiotic. I wasn't thinking! I’m sorry!”
“All talk and no game...” Rouge slyly commented.
Amy’s head snapped to Rouge’s direction. Her wrath like a dark cloud hovered over the two. Rouge slipped down in her seat.
Knuckles laughed out loud in the middle of silence. He was amused that Amy got Rouge to be quiet for once.
The hammer was dropped next to Sonic’s pleading form. He opened his eyes and looked up at her. She made a motion saying she is watching him. She turned and stalked back to her car.
Now with Eggman out of the race, Sonic looking over his shoulder for Amy, and Amy in a tizzy, Rouge felt like he had this race in the bag.
What Rouge had miscalculated was the anger that Amy felt didn’t make her racing sloppy in fact it locked her into focus. She was especially ruthless using all of her arsenal on Rouge and Sonic specifically.
Rouge was in 6th place, Sonic got 4th and Amy got first.
After the race Knuckles gave a you-got-what-was-coming-to-you look to Rouge. She crossed her arms irritated.
Sonic jogged up Amy “That was amazing racing!”
Amy gave him a glare and lifted her nose up at him and walked away.
Sonic deflated. He knew she wouldn’t forgive him right away but the spectacle of racing almost made him forget his error.
“Ooof Kid!” A heavy hand landed on Sonic's head. He looked up at Vector. “You made her look like a floozy in front of everyone. It's going to take a long time and a lot of effort to fix this.”
He gave Vector an unimpressed look at his unsolicited advice. Vector just shrugged and continued on.
Sonic stared at Amy’s retreating form. He was going to make it up to her, he promised.
He set up a picnic blanket under a tree, far far away from the racing complex. He checked the area for any of Dodon Pa’s cameras. Everything looked good to him. Now the only thing was to get Amy here. He caught her walking to the cafeteria of the racing complex.
“Hey Ames, can we talk?” He started casually smiling.
She closed her eyes and gave a sigh. An irritated pause hung in the air. “Fine,” She relented.
“Great!” Sonic scooped her up in a bridal hold.
Amy squeaked in surprise.
They raced out to the picnic spot.
He let her down gently from his hold. She crossed her arms and turned her body away from him.
“C’mon Ames, I’m trying to apologize here.”
He scratched the back of his neck. And moved to be in front of her. She closed her eyes and turned her head to the side.
“I’m sorry I made it seem like you were….” What was the word Vector had used? “A… floozy?”
Amy's eyes flashed open and she tried to give Sonic a cold stare, but her mouth was twitching.
“A what?” She asked flatly.
He looked down at the ground to avoid her eyes. “A-a floozy?” The word felt weird coming from his mouth.
A snort rang out. Sonic's eyes snapped up. Amy held her hand up to cover her smile. She lost the battle and ended up laughing. “What- kinda- word is- That!” She said in-between her laughter.
Sonic gave a relieved smile. “It's an appropriate word!” He faked being offended.
Amy laughed a little bit harder holding her stomach. “You need- to stop- hanging out- with Vector!” she tried to breathe.
“Ya well, sometimes he has some good advice.” He said off handedly. Scratching the side of his head.
Amy wiped a tear from her eye and took some deep breaths.
Sonic looked at her in the eyes now. “It's true though, Amy. I am sorry about making you look… bad in front of everyone.” They both took a breath.
Amy looked away. “I get it… you have an image of a confident hero you need to uphold.”
“Yah well, that's no excuse.” He kept his eyes on hers.
She looked up at him again with a small smile on her face.
He gave a small smile back. Then a thought hit him. He stepped back and gave her a playful grin. “Now I'm curious though,” He rubbed his nose. “Were you… jealous?” He made a mischievous face at her.
Amy's eyebrows shot up. A glint of anger flashed in her eyes. How dare he accuse me of….! Her eyebrows fell into confusion and her eyes darted playing over the incident in her mind. Her ears, head and shoulders drooped. She let out a sigh. “Yeah, I guess… I was.”
He came closer and placed his hands on both her arms. He lowered his head so he could catch her eye. “Amy…” How was he going to phrase this? “I’m sorry…” He straightened up his back for courage. “You- you have nothing to worry about in that department...”
She snapped her head up at him, her eyes shining with hope and joy. He gave her a small genuine smile. Had he really just hinted that she was the only one for him?
They blinked and the moment was over. “Soooo….We going to eat this food I brought? I’m starving!” Sonic’s nerves had caught up to him.
He made his way over to the picnic basket and started to rummage out some of the food.
The warmth of his hands on her arms lingered. “Oh Sonic…” She whispered. She shook her head and joined him on the blanket.
They talked and ate Amy's favorite sandwich and shared a slice of strawberry cheesecake.
I think everyone thinks Amy and Sonic are dating in secret. Rouge is here to stir the pot.
Sonic is just a shy boy with lots of responsibilities. He has and image to uphold. A Nemesis that would use any romantic feelings he has against him.
He is a boy that is worried about what others think. Also, he doesn't think how much his words and actions affect those he is close to sometimes. But being the good boy he is, he tries to be better.
I feel bad for Amy, but I think some of the reasons she doesn't lose patience on Sonic (Sometimes she slips! it's kinda hard to be patient for so long!) is because she knows what is truly in his heart even though he has a hard time expressing it. It is nice to have reminders every once and a while though.
Another reason is she has her own things going on while she waits for Sonic. Leadership roles, humanitarian works, world traveling, baking for fun, hanging out with Vanilla and Cream, ect.
