Previously My Little Korean Journey

So I’ve seen people asking/looking for places to practice verb conjugation, and while there are sites that will give you the conjugations for a verb, there hasn’t been any practice sheets I’ve seen like for other languages.

So in an effort to do something a bit worthwhile while procrastinating, I decided to try my hand at making one for Korean!

I tried to include the major tenses learned in level 1-2, with some of the most common connective suffixes too. Below the suffixes is noun modifiers, which is how you create adjective form verbs. I also included a little place for you to take any notes. (It should be noted my * and - note on either example sheet are actually rules to remember.)

If you’re studying any foreign language on your own (or without a course) you’re going to need to be extra organized. Your language study is in your own hands and so is how much you learn. There is no one holding you accountable or motivated either. So it’s entirely up to you to make sure you’re organized and planning enough material that your learning at a comfortable pace. There are roughly two ways to learn languages on your own. There are roughly two ways to go about planning your language study: intensively or casually. Here are my tips for intensive studying and I’ll post about casual studying soon:

~이에요 if ur name ends with a consonnant ~예요 if it ends with a vowel

verb+는 것을 좋아해요

This is probably one of the most common questions that beginners ask when learning 한글. Just like every beginner learners, I went through this as well which is why I decided to study pronunciation rules too. I created this post to help clear up any confusion.

When ㄹ is located at the beginning of a word, it sounds more like an R.

Example: 라디오 (ra-di-o), 레슨 (re-seun), 로맨틱 (ro-man-tik)

When ㄹ is located between two vowels, it sounds like an R.

Example: 다리 (da-ri), 사랑 (sa-rang), 어렵다 (eo-ryeob-dda), 모르다 (mo-reu-da), 노력 (no-ryeok), 매력 (mae-ryeok)

When ㄹ is located at the end of a word, it’s pronounced more like an L.

Example: 딸 (ddal), 아들 (a-deul), 월 (weol), 달 (dal), 칼 (khal), 연필 (yeon-pil), 교실 (gyo-sil)

When ㄹ is followed by a consonant or followed by another ㄹ, it sounds like L.

Example: 딸기 (ddal-gi), 힘들다 (him-deul-da), 몰라 (mol-la), 살자 (sal-ja), 고릴라 (go-ril-la)

When ㄹ comes after any consonant except ㄴ, ㄹ is pronounced as N.

Example: 생리 (saeng-ni), 국립 (gung-nip), 능력 (neung-nyeok)

When ㄹ comes before or after an ㄴ, both ㄹ and ㄴ are pronounced as ㄹ.

Example: 한류 (hal-lyu), 신라 (sil-la), 신랑 (sil-lang), 달나라 (dal-la-ra)

Disclaimer: Hope this helps but remember not to rely too much on romanizations and listen to the sounds properly as well.

Ah like what I think you need/need to do in order to get started in Studying Korean? Sure~

First first first~ Learn how to read hangul. Using romanization will only negatively affect your pronunciation and reading skills, so the quicker you learn hangul the better.I recommend using a video source, so you can hear and watch someone pronounce each letter properly. I don’t have a source I personally used, as I just kind of picked it up slowly living in a Korean neighborhood, but I know more and more good options are on Youtube!

Find a reliable primary study source! I love having the Korean study community here on tumblr, but everyday I scroll through my dash and see incorrect information/thing that are just a little off of natural. We are all learning and supporting each other but we’re all bound to make mistakes time to time, so don’t rely on just tumblr for your study material.I’m not recommending going and spending a lot of money on textbooks right away, if you can, save your money until you’re a bit deeper into the language and the free resources dry up mighty fast (I can rarely find stuff levelled with what I’m studying in class for free).There are quite a few PDFs of beginner textbooks floating around tumblr. Download them and and read through them, and find which teaches in a style best suited for you! A textbook that matches your learning style is far more important than what is the most popular. I personally studied with Korean Grammar in Use, which does have a pdf floating around as well.

For getting used to writing hangul download and print out 원고지 paper. It is simple gridded paper that Korean students use for essay writing. It will also be how you will write essays in TOPIK II (if you plan on studying to that point), so you can get used to it early.

For grammar and sentence building, take your time with lessons and utilize any exercises the book you are using gives you. But don’t stop there! Make a Lang-8 account and put that new grammar to work! Make even basic sentences and post them for native speakers to correct. You’ll pick up on Korean sentence structure and the grammar you’re studying much quicker that way.

For listening, I assume most people are not like me, and actually actively participate in Korean entertainment, dramas kpop whatev. Now you put it to use. Dramas are good for hearing clear pronunciation, but make sure to watch variety shows too, as this is much more similar to how Koreans really talk.

For speaking, just speak. This is the hardest for me as well because I hate making mistakes, but talk to yourself all the time. You’ll get used to hearing yourself speak. If you watch dramas start repeating simple lines you hear until you can say it like the actors do.

And lastly have patience with yourself. Learning a language is not an overnight project and not everyone learns at the same pace. I still catch myself beating myself up for not being farther than I am, but I’m learning at the pace I am meant to learn a language as difficult as Korean at. Make language friends here or in real life and motivate and encourage each other. Know we all have our ups and downs studying but with dedication and patience we’ll reach whatever language goal we have.

Naver Dictionary/Daum Dictionary- App and websites (doooon’t use google translate. It really doesn’t work for non Euro languages)

Memrise/Quizlet/Anki- Apps/Websites Make flashcards. Practice Vocab

HiNative- App Ask native speakers questions/answer questions about your native language. Share and share alike

Hellotalk/Tandem- Apps Connect with language partners and practice with native speakers

Tips for when studying is the last thing you want to do!

1. Write out on sticky notes the name of objects in your room, then go ahead and stick them on everything. Next time you turn on your light, make yourself look (or at least glance) at the word. Next time you open your drawer, look at the note. Any time you turn on your lamp, your laptop charger or your speakers, you’ll always have that vocabulary there and you’ll learn each of them in no time.

2. Play the radio/podcasts or a Korean show for background noise. Most of us don’t like to sit and scroll through Facebook in total silence. I recommend 슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다 (which is available on youtube!) as it is centred around children and any vocabulary you pick up will be helpful. Others include:

• 2 Days 1 Night

• Hello Counselor

• 이웃집 찰스

• Hello Baby

3. Write down phrases on flash cards. Break down the words. Some people have more success reading phrases on flash cards rather than just single vocabulary. Stick these in a place you’ll sit at often, or you could also stick them on items they pertain to just like in tip #1.

4. Just once a day, when you’re out and about or even just at home, search the dictionary for a word. Say you’re out eating, and you don’t know the word for “to order”. Whip out that phone, search it up and try to commit it to memory. One word a day is 365 words a year, and odds are you’ll pick up more than that anyway!

5. Google Play has a selection of multi-language books. Buy a Korean and English children’s book and try to read it (if you’re up to it). The English translation will always be there, so it’s less brain power for you to go and search up everything you don’t know! Plus, you might learn some small phrases in the process.

6. Watch Korean YouTubers. YouTube is fun to watch, so why not watch it in Korean? - 영국남자 (Korean Englishman) is an English man who is great at Korean, he always has English and Korean subs on. By the end of a few episodes you’ll know what “ 남자답다” and “살아 있네!” Means! - Pony’s Makeup is a great channel if you love makeup. You’ll pick up makeup related vocab and phrases, as well learn new techniques and styles. - Maangchi is a Korean lady who teaches you how to cook Korean food. It’s mostly in English but she talks about Korean words sometimes. - 꿀키 is another cooking channel, however there’s no talking, only the blissful sounds of soup boiling and onions frying! She puts small instructions on her videos in both English and Korean. Take notes!

7. Download a widget on your phone that gives you a new word every time you swipe to unlock. Simple, easy and there in your pocket.

8. Fill your social media with Korean. Follow Korean study blogs (though don’t rely on them 100% as most are run by non-fluent speakers), follow Korean daily vocab twitters and Facebook pages. Everything you see will be Korean and you’ll start to pick up on words that you see all the time.

♡ in korean, it is important to use the correct sentence structure, or your sentences may seem really confusing :

-> in english : Subject Verb Object -> in korean : Subject Object Verb

now, let’s look at some examples!

we are gonna use this simple sentence : “i bought a book”, in korean it would be : “i a book bought”

저는 책을 샀어요 책 = book 샀어요(past tense) from the verb 사다 = to buy it’s really different, right?

⚠ the object ALWAYS comes BEFORE the verb, and the verb is ALWAYS at the END of the sentence. ⚠

♡ locations are also used BEFORE verbs :

“저는 학교에 가요” i go to school 학교 = school 에= location particle (to) 가요 (present tense) from the verb 가다 = to go

“저는 학교에서 공부해요” i study at school 학교 = school 에서 = location particle (at) 공부해요 (present tense) from the verb 공부하다 = to study

“저는 집에 잤어요” i slept at home 집 = home 에 = location particle (at) 잤어요 (past tense) from the verb 자다 = to sleep

⚠ you can put the time before or after the subject though :

both of these sentences mean “today I will eat at home” :

before -> 오늘 저는 집에서 먹을 거예요 after -> 저는 오늘 집에서 먹을 거예요 오늘 = today 집 = home 에서 = location particle (at) 먹을 거예요 (future tense) from the verb 먹다 = to verb

“tomorrow, i will study at school” before -> 내일 저는 학교에서 공부할 거예요 after -> 저는 내일 학교에서 공부할 거예요 내일 = tomorrow 학교 = school 에서 = location particle (at) 공부하다 = to study ~ㄹ 거예요 (future tense)

♡ adverbs are added before verbs : 저는 열심히 공부해요 I study hard 열심히 = hard

and finally, adjectives work the same way as they do in english! just put them before the noun they describe :

매운 라면 = spicy ramen 매운 = spicy 라면 = ramen

예쁜 여자 = beautiful woman 예쁜 = beautiful 여자 =  woman
