In this scene, Clark says "Can you imagine how good that must feel?"
"There's no thoughts, no pain, no ego. No fear. They simply exist. Like furniture."
But then when he turns the light off, the wheelchair user turns his lamp on. When Mary hits The Pirate with the concrete piece, he yells in pain. Clark consoles The Pirate as though its feelings might be hurt. And when the memory of his wife sees The Pirate, she tries desperately to get away.
They have every one of those things. He just refuses to see their interiority. Like he always did. Like he refused to understand why his wife would kick him out, and keeps refusing, even now that he can see that she was terrified of him. Cause she's always been just furniture to him.
That scene really unsettled me deeply because of how the sentience of the still lives is implied.
Clark claims they aren’t really alive the same way we are, comparing them to the furniture. Yet the way the others act suggests otherwise. That at the very least they can react to and feel certain stimuli around them, the same way living things do. Which begs the question… what about the six eyed man?
Yes, he is the most docile and unresponsive of the still lives, but does that discount the idea he may be alive and aware? For all we know, he could simply not be able to move while having awareness and sensation, unable to act on it the same way the others might. Yet Clark carves into him and takes out chunks to eat.
It reminded me of how humans often justify eating or abusing animals, like fish for instance, because they don’t really feel pain the same way “higher” beings do. An apt parallel considering Clark’s similarly self centred disregard for the people around him and their feelings
