MRI machines and cooling units and AC and IT systems in hospitals are breaking due to the heat. Lab equipment is failing. Some cancer treatments cannot be done due to machine failures. A&E overcrowding is worse due to heat related health issues and sheer amount of people is making the heat in hospitals worse (and the AC! Is breaking!) Patients with appointments are being advised to bring in "a lot" of water with them to be able to safely attend. Fans cannot be used in hospitals. Norwich has no functuoning MRI scanners right now. And the staff have to keep working through all of this, they are getting ill and sleep deprived which is compounding issues further. This is not normal 👍
In the PNW too a ton of us live in houses without air conditioning because we never needed it before, you could just run a box fan in the window overnight. We literally do not have the infrastructure

The poorest folk are the ones living in the homes and apartments that are too old for inbuilt AC and that haven't been retrofitted for it. And they can't afford window units, especially not with the markup, if there even is one left in the store to buy. The people sweltering in the back of every restaurant right now where the aircon is broken but the manager won't close? Those are working class people who can't afford to get fired, working over stove tops in 105F heat.
In most of these locations these poorest people are disproportionately likely to not be white* which makes the repeated smug geniuses (who ime frequently/mostly also identify themselves as white, which is a fascinating dynamic to unpack another time) in every thread like this piping up with “white people problems!” particularly disgusting. Beyond the perennial point we keep trying to convey on this webbed site that guys, equating ‘Europe’ only with ‘white people’ is what our local racists do and people claiming to be progressive need to stop repeating their talking points.
*plus even outside the lowest incomes or the most heat-intensive manual jobs, things like home ownership rates are also correlated with ethnicity [UK stats as example] and a) a lot of rental tenants are prohibited from having anything except free-standing devices even if they can afford them and b) window AC units are not compatible with a lot of building windows in the UK (casement has long been much commoner than sash) and afaik many other European countries, because they were never built with them in mind. Because this is 15-20•c hotter than summer temperatures at the time they were built. Because of that whole global climate crisis.
This article on housing in Paris was a rough read, and most (possibly all, idk) of the Parisians quoted were Black or North African French, who are in fact a large, long-standing and important part of the population. This really should not be news to anyone.

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
So the heatwave affecting India right now is insane. For my fellow fahrenheit folks out there, 60°C (the white areas) is 140°F.

While continued vigilance a regulation is needed, this data indicates that regulations are working to reduce PFAS concentrations in marine ecosystems.
Yes!!!! I did a review of literature on PFASs in human drinking water about half a year ago, and there is a lot of really good progress! Please celebrate this, please don't let this solution be forgotten (at least so quickly) as the ozone layer or acid rain.
We are making genuine progress! Producers are dramatically altering how much they use PFAS and how much gets released in effluent, but also there's a lot better understanding of how to remove PFAS from the environment!

This is one of the reasons I hate the term "forever chemicals."
Forever chemicals is a a term for a contaminant that is hard to break down, PFAS are a group of chemicals that fit in the category, but they aren't the only contaminants that are hard to break down. They're just the ones that gained attention recently. And for some god damned reason journalists decided that a string of letters is to hard to remember and coopted the term forever chemicals to refer to PFAS, even though it's not spefic.
But calling them forever chemicals implies that we can't beat them. While remediation is hard (so much easier to not release contaminants), it's possible. This is a battle, a war we can win.

☝️🤓 it’s because the further you move toward the earth’s poles, the lower the angle of the sun is at the hottest parts of the day, meaning the radiation hits your whole body, causing it to feel 10-20 degrees warmer than the thermometer reading will tell you. People from tropical climes, aka close to the equator, are used to the sun’s radiation hitting a much smaller target- their head and shoulders.
Also the further you move toward the poles the more pronounced the difference between the length of day and night is. Worst part of a far-north (or south) heatwave is it doesn’t get dark long enough for meaningful cooling.
It’s not the heat. It very literally is the sun.

As someone who has high heat sensitivity (migraines, fainting) and does live in a hot climate - so many people are going to be less healthy for no reason.
My home is built for the heat. We also have a/c. This is what keeps me functional during the summer, when I avoid leaving the house during hotter hours as much as possible.
From my understanding, in colder countries not used to this weather, people are less likely to have these adjustments. So someone like me, born with this sensitivity or someone who has it for other reasons (like medication), would be less able to function than I can, living in a place where 35 Celsius weeks are pretty normal. And more and more people are going to discover that they have these kind of sensitivities because they'll get exposed to more extreme heat more often.
Same hat! I *had* to get a wheelchair because of how dangerous it gets for me to stay on my feet in the heat now, and that's before we consider the heatwaves (don't get me wrong, it benefits me year round, but it is not optional when it's hot. I WILL collapse and have a migraine and will have to crawl home if i'm *lucky* and then be unable to care for myself for a week). Heat just makes every symptom exponentially worse.
It used to be that I'd be out of action for a week a year, and most of that would be recovering from 2 or 3 hot days. Without my wheelchair it would now be months. And theres not even a decade between those two.

it's no doubt been said many times, but global warming is a class issue. not only because how the economy runs and how much environmental harm it produces is almost exclusively controlled by the capitalist class in most countries, but because that class, and its lackeys, move between air conditioned homes, air conditioned cars, air conditioned offices, and air conditioned recreational spaces, while many people in lower classes globally suffer inescapable heat due to the way they're forced to live. the suffering and deaths caused by hot summer days is a class issue
