Mother Otter Dotes on Her Pup

To a Starbucks in Paris all covered with vines

Went twelve little girls in two straight lines.

In two straight lines they ordered bread

and drank their drinks

till they were fed.

They smiled at the good

and frowned at the bad

and sometimes

they were very sad.

They left the house

at half past nine

in two straight lines

in rain

or shine–

The smallest one

was Madeline.

She could order by

herself–

She loved coffee

light, with milk.

To those who preferred a darker brew,

Madeline just said, “pooh-pooh.”

And nobody knew so well

just what to order for Miss Clavel.

“One macchiato

and a slice of bread

For Miss Clavel, please,”

Madeline said.

“Thank you, little girl.

I love caramel.

Now let’s go home,”

said Miss Clavel.

And they walked out the shop

and shut the door

and that’s all there is–
