recently I've seen a lot of Tim Drake hate on my feed which is confusing in of itself because I love Tim but also the hate itself is confusing and until now, I haven't seen a valid argument as to why.
all I've seen are people saying "he replaced Jason" "he's entitled" "he ruined Damian's chance to go to med school" so, as a way to get myself some answers I thought ill post what I think of each of these arguments, and if someone that hates Tim has a different argument then please comment it and ill argue it too. I really do love Tim and while I have seen some valid arguments like people not liking him for what he did to Steph these other arguments are so much more widespread which just makes no sense to me
before I say anything I'm not hating on anyone that doesn't like Tim. Everyone is obligated to their own opinion and if I've got anything wrong then please correct me this whole post is just me debating all of the arguments I've seen so far from my knowledge
#1 "he replaced Jason"
this was an issue that was established early on, and I can see why that'd be upsetting for fans of Jason but I also don't see how its relevant now because you guys don't realize the circumstances that caused Tim to become robin and no one that has said this has explained how they still think so even after understanding said circumstances.
Batman was entirely grief-stricken and it was causing a lot of problems for people and Tim initially wasn't thinking of being robin himself he first went to Dick to convince him and when that didn't work and both Bruce and Dick were in danger, he decided to do it himself.
you can't expect crime to stop just because Jason died, I get where you are coming from when anyone says that but just because Jason himself sees it that way doesn't mean you should too. the difference is YOU as the reader know the full story unlike JASON who just came back from the dead to find someone random in his costume and stealing his mantle.
unless you give me a solution for no one to "steal" Jason's mantle and at the same time stop batman from being dangerous then you can't just say that he replaced Jason when that clearly wasn't what anyone was thinking at the time.
intentions and circumstances matter you can't throw that aside and hate on a character just for the fun of it.
#2 "He's Entitled"
ive only seen this point in reference to his reaction to Dick giving Damian robin in the red robin comics
personally, I think he has every right to be upset even if its Dick's original thing and as much as I agree that Dick has a right to choose who should be Robin, he shouldn't do the exact same thing that Bruce did to him which is give Jason the robin mantle without talking to dick about it
and yes of course the circumstances are different and dick was a lot more upset since as I've mentioned it is Dick's original thing but it is still hypocritical especially considering what everyone was going through at the time with Bruce being "dead" and also Tims best friends being dead but honestly you guys have to realize that According to Tim, Robin was the only thing he had going for him. His best friends are dead, his mentor/adoptive father is dead, his actual parents are dead, and no one believes him about Bruce being alive which caused him to fight with almost everyone he knows so literally he has NOTHING else going for him
getting the rug pulled out from under him like that without even a word of warning would upset anyone in that situation
and besides that, he wasn't even that upset he moved on almost immediately so using that moment as a character defining situation and calling him entitled and saying that he shouldn't feel entitled to Dicks mantle and legacy is stupid and unneeded ESPECIALLY because I never see anyone pulling the "its Dicks title and his legacy" card on literally any other robin its only Tim.
also, he didn't even care about it being taken from him as much as he cared that dick gave it to Damian of all people
and while I think it was a good decision and that Damian needed it more at the time I think it could've been done better and not be used as a reason to hate a character cause that's just illogical
and finally, #3 "he ruined Damians chances of going to med school by quitting"
I can't lie ive understood how someone could come to the conclusion of the other two but this one honestly just pisses me off because of how stupid it is
I love Damian and I love that he has plans for the future and stuff like that but I'm sorry I first of all don't see the correlation between his ability to go to med school and Tim quitting robin
and other than that, frankly I'm sorry but I don't care.
Tim started being Robin to help batman and ever since then he's done nothing but put everyone else above him (he literally fell from a building and didn't care because "at least he saved Bruce's loved ones" I don't wanna hear it ) and frankly his world collapsed around him so I'm sorry that the first time he chooses to do something that is relatively for himself and to explore the possibilities for himself that it somehow effects Damian going to med school
anyway, I don't think I have anything else to say if you guys have anything to say go ahead the whole point of this post is to hear people's different opinions (be civil please or I won't bother debating anything) thank you for coming to my ted talk.
