There was no way to anticipate how loud and clear the word ‘latkes’ echoed throughout Kairi’s mind. It was a tad overwhelming, which was pleasantly surprising considering how the other’s previous attempt went. “That’s a type of food, right?” He asked. “Not sure if I had it before, but very good! Your answer was one of the more stronger psychic energies I’ve felt in recent times.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Hagen nodded excitedly at Kairi’s question, a signal that it had worked, he’d actually done it. “Really? I could make you some. They’re not as good as bubbe’s or Judah’s mom’s, but at least they aren’t that too dry and burnt stuff the Feldman’s used to serve. Oh was that - that was really judgmental wasn’t it?” he made a sort of embarrassed hiss noise, “no, no they deserve it. I, mean, how do you fuck up latkes every time? How? It makes no sense! and don’t even get me started on them trying to serve them with ketchup on the side. what am I, a monster?” he paused in his impassioned views on the Feldman family latkes. “Sorry.” he apologized for his mild rant and ramble, shaking his head a little, as if shaking it out of his system. “It was? That’s good, right?” Stronger sounded like it was supposed to be good.

Cade had no idea how to reply to that. He certainly hadn’t been expecting it. He didn’t consider himself any type of amazing or a good person by any means. He was trying to do better in that regard, to make up for all the hurt and pain he’d caused during his time in the Hunt, but he didn’t feel he had quite reached his redemption yet. He had a long way to go still.

Hearing Hagen, though, he wondered if maybe he was further along than he thought. Stepping over, he hesitated before lifting his hand and laying it on Hagen’s shoulder. He let it sit there for a moment, before patting it a couple times. Clearing his throat to try and rid it of the lump that had formed there, he turned away. “There are sheets in the linen closet,” he said, keeping his back turned toward Hagen so he couldn’t see whatever expression Cade was making.

Hagen hadn’t expected a response of any kind, that wasn’t why he’d said it, so when the other put his hand on his shoulder he was a bit surprised. He didn’t say anything about it either. “Oh thanks.” he said going over to find the sheets, pulling a set of them down from inside the linen closet. “Can I ask something?” he asked as he started to make up the couch. “do you ever get lonely out here?” 

“Not so much the reasons. The cover… is the lie. I guess that’s the best way of putting it. But it is easier this way, to keep covered. People don’t question it because they don’t know that it should be questions. To them it just looks normal. I look normal. But… I’m not normal.” Maybe she had said too much but it was the only way she could begin to explain herself. “I have a laptop too if you want to do it in the mean time.”

“Not normal? I’m not sure normal is a thing.” Hagen gave a shrug, there were things he had grown up with that he saw as normal that others would find weird. His abilities could be considered normal to those who had abilities or magic too, but to others he’d be labelled a freak. “We can be not normal together.” he smiled, “oh yeah that would make sense to do”

“The cemetery’s a good idea,” Judah said with a nod. He smiled when Hagen mentioned food and a new card trick. “Oh yeah?” he said, stepping closer. “What kind of card trick? Can you show me now?”

“Now? Yeah, yeah of course” he took his hand, guiding him over to his bed and then pushing him down to have a seat. “Okay, so I haven’t done this for anyone yet, well just Wallace, but no actual people” he said as he got his deck of cards from his drawer. He proceeded to do the trick having Judah pick a card. At first when he pulled a card and asked if it was the one he’d pulled it was the wrong card, same with the second. “Oh man this is embarrassing” he shook his head, “okay, we’ll just put these two away so I don’t accidentally draw them again.” he said as he took the two cards, starting to put them in his pocket, his face scrunching up in a confused look as he put his hand in his pocket. “Huh that’s weird, I don’t remember putting anything in here” he pulled out a card, the correct one that Judah had chosen. 

“I see. That’s very sweet of you,” Clare said with a small smile. “But I’m afraid a space like this would be for rent, not for sale. You’d have to pay monthly to keep it, plus there’s the amount of electricity something like that would use … are you sure you’re ready for such a big financial responsibility?”

“Well, I kind of want to save up first. Maybe enough so I don’t have to worry about the first few months. For Judah to have a space to show off how amazing he is at what he does, I will be. Though, maybe not right this very second, but someday.”

Cade paused, glancing up at Hagen and allowing a brief, small smile. “I’m glad you like it,” he said with a slight nod, turning back to his own food, then. He ate in silence, as he preferred to eat, before standing to clear the table once he was done. “You can stay here for the night if you need to,” he offered, not knowing if Hagen had other arrangements these days.

It took Hagen a moment after Cade said something for him to realize it had worked. An excited grin stretched across his face, though he tried not to get overly excited as to not send a barrage of thoughts accidentally over the faerie. Hagen hadn’t planned on staying the night, but it had already started to get dark out. He would text Helena that he was spending the night at his....he wasn’t exactly sure what Cade was to him, he was spending the night with someone safe. “Thanks.” he said about to simply go sit on the couch, before he stopped himself. “Hey, umm I know you really don’t like how much I ramble on most of the time, so I promise I will make this short.” he started, “but I just - I want you to know you’re kind of amazing and one of the best people I’ve met in a long time.”
