I'm listening to the official cast recording for Hadestown for the first time, after my first watch was on Broadway with no prior knowledge other than "Orpheus/AnaĂŻs Mitchell/mutuals are insane about it." Most of the cast difference just comes down to my preference, but I want to take a minute to talk about Daniel Breaker's Hermes, the one I saw on Broadway, and why I love his performance so much.
He is not an objective narrator. He is not a stand in for the audience. He is very, very emotionally involved. "His mother was a friend of mine/[muses] abandon you" as if she was an old lover who jilted him. Answering "is he always like this?" as if he has tried to reach Orpheus to be smoother. "Why do you care?" as if admonishing him, seeing an echo of Orpheus' mother who abandons people on a whim. Telling Orpheus the way to the underworld as if he is begging him not to go and begging him to be careful and begging him to survive. Asking Hades if his releasing Orpheus and Eurydice is a trick as if he is horrified and terrified for the two of them, as if he sees right through it and knows they will fail. Telling Orpheus and Eurydice about Hades' conditions as if begging Orpheus to trust, to not look back, to prove Hades wrong. Singing "it's a sad, sad song" as if he's about to cry. This is not a story he is telling, it is a story he is in.
After seeing the pro shoot I appreciate this aspect that he brought to Hermes even more. AndrĂŠ de Shields's Hermes has done this so many times that he's given up hope of Orpheus learning or changing. He's been jaded by time and given up hope. But he still cries at the end. It is still a sad, sad song.
all iâm saying is idk how you can expect me to remain silent about the ways in which hadestown distinguishes orpheus as a Magic Music Boy in a medium where everyone is singing, and furthermore how i can have been expected not to imprint on him like a baby bird,,,,,,,,,,
like i just dk how iâm supposed to live with the fact that he is the only character in âroad to hellâ who sings upon being introduced!!!!
or how in âcome home with meâ orpheus not only sings his lines while eurydiceâs lines are spoken but his voice is ALSO twined through with these ethereal harmonies, like thatâs just what happens when he gets excited?? like donât you wish an unseen chorus started harmonizing with YOU when you were trying to impress your crush,,,,,,
OR how when he does speak his voice often sounds kind of whispy and thin, like heâs not used to it, or like instead of being nervous about singing in front of other people, the way most people are, heâs more nervous about speaking in front of them??? and even when he is speaking in that little voice of his thereâs usually still kind of a musical little uptick to it???
or the innocent pride he takes in his Magical Musical Accomplishments, like heâs a little kid whoâs discovered he has a knack for something and not a literal touched-by-the-gods son of a muse who can alter reality with his voice, because this is just how his life is???

like just in general the way the world around him responds to his singing is so fascinating to me and it brings me endless joy: thereâs the aforementioned part of âwait for me,â and thereâs also the part of âwedding songâ where he sings That Melody for eurydice and you can hear the world around him opening up, thereâs âIF ITâS TRUEâ and the âis it true?â part of âchant (reprise)â where heâs basically shaking the denizens of the underworld from an amnesiatic TRANCE like iâm
eurydice has forgotten her own name by the time orpheus finds her but he sings âcome home with me?â to her and in a line she is able to sing his name back to him i JUST!!!!!!!!! i will not be SILENCED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The funny thing about this thread is that a phone battery doesn't actually go to 107% when it's failing, because the battery percentage indicator is measuring subtle changes in voltage. OP's battery, if it was actually failing in this way, might stall at 100% before visibly draining to its actual capacity after some time as a more generic sign of the battery failing, but gas buildup inside of a battery isn't going to make it hold more power in a meaningfully usable way, and of course nothing inside of a phone would allow it to measure and display this inflated (badumtsk) capacity
So, it's bad bait! If a battery's capacity could be so easily expanded by inflating it with more power, this would be a desirable product with lots of useful applications in bald dog grooming

Hadestown is not subtle in how it shows the power of revolutionaries, of love and hope and human compassion over that of the capitalist cycle of abuse. WRoC is talking about Orpheus. But it is also talking about every person with that revolutionary spirit.
Orpheus is all of us, and every person who stands against exploitation, is Orpheus. The theme is there, but itâs especially strong in Is It True, where he stands against the Fates themselves to challenge the world, only bolstered by the normal people that stood up and heard his words and showed him the power of words.
When Persephone asks where Orpheus is now, it is not entirely that she wonders where the man himself is, but also that she is pouring a drop to every person who holds his legacy and fights for the cause.
Then they praise the birds who sing in the night and the flowers that bloom in snow. A metaphor for those people who fight to make beauty in inhospitable places, who strive for good in darkness.
âTo Orpheus, and all of usâ
To Orpheus, to those who hold his spirit, to those who lead revolutions, and to those who follow him. The cycle of Orpheus and Eurydice is a love song. It is a tragedy. And yet we all know that one day. one time. they will make it out together. It is on that day, when an Orpheus finally manages to bring their Eurydice back, that the revolution succeeds, and the Shades get to follow their path out of Hades. And the mortals get to live free from the poverty and despair of their oppression.
We sing the song even though it is sad, because we know that spring will come and the world will go back in tune once they make it out together. And Hades can take the seasons, the food from our mouths, the fire from our stoves, every ounce of gold from the rivers, but what he cannot take, nor any other like him, is our songs and the cries of an impassioned heart. And may those songs inspire a thousand Orpheusâ to journey to defeat Hades. Because eventually one will win. It only takes one.
So let the song reach the next Orpheus, wherever they are wandering. Alone on this Earth. And let the song comfort them as they start the cycle again.
