I’ve been a fan of his work for years, so getting the chance to collaborate with him on FLY felt surreal. As a fellow Black artist with Ghanaian roots, his journey has always inspired me. Seeing him carve out his own path through art is a reminder of what’s possible when we bet on ourselves and our stories.

That’s why he was the perfect choice to draw the boys of FLY. This story is about discovering your power, and his work captures that feeling perfectly. Thank you so much @awk3005_ for creating this beautiful print for FLY.

FLY guys ! I started making FLY because I wanted to tell a story where black boys love eachother and they aren’t afraid to show it. The kind of kids who are never too cool to hug or cry in front of eachother. I think if we want the world to be safer for black kids we have to start in our own communities.

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

But yeah, is this the new cover for The Long-Lived King? Was the original just a conceptual one, and this is what we’ll get? If so I dig the minimalist vibe, it’s not something I feel you would see often because executives don’t find it as “marketable” but this is more about an artistic atmosphere and I like it…!

While we’re at it, I have to ask; Will the pages themselves be colored as well? I know TLLK is manga-inspired but it being a graphic novel gives me hope the panels themselves will have color…!

My family now lives in a tent with no stable shelter, my sister Jana has no school, and I have no steady job. My brother Kamal carries the burden of the entire family, working every day to secure just enough food, while I search for any work, no matter how difficult or dangerous, just to survive.

My mother, the beautiful dream we once cherished, wished for a calm and happy life for us, but the war tore us apart and shattered our hopes. As for Jana, my innocent sister, she lost her school, her books, and even her sense of hope, yet she still writes her dreams on small pieces of paper, hiding them in her torn clothes so they won’t get lost like everything else.

We are not asking for the impossible, only what keeps us alive with dignity and gives us a chance to rebuild our lives. Every donation, no matter how small, means so much to us. Your support will give us hope to keep going and try again. 🙏❤️

Because of the tent life and the spread of infectious diseases and many epidemics, she deserves a better life like other children; she has the right to play and study.

Every morning, Adam and Habiba dream of going to school, but due to serious financial difficulties, I can no longer afford their education.
