day one of sapphic bonnie bennett ft. bonlena.
now playing; jealous, jealous girl.
The Lockwood mansion was packed. Any teenager that owned a phone in Mystic falls crowed themselves onto the large property, dance music bouncing off the walls, plastic cups with mysterious liquid glowing under the lighting overhead.
In a secluded corner Elena pressed against the wall, the seventeen-year-old girl looked every bit of brooding watching her best friend Bonnie Bennett laugh too loudly at something Vicki Donovan whispered in her ear.
Elena’s eyes rolled as she swished around the amber fluid around in her own cup. It didn’t help that Bonnie looked amazing tonight. Not that she didn’t look amazing every day, but this night was just different.
Her curls were loose and carefree in a way that made her look magical. The purple top she chose to wear complemented her golden-brown complexion. Elena softly groaned to herself, head leaning back against the wall.
“I’m pathetic.”
“That you are.” Her second best friend, Tyler Lockwood, slid in front of her, a look of amusement plastered on his face. “You’re brooding.”
Elena glanced up, her face twisted up in something ugly yet very familiar.
Jealousy. Pure, raw jealousy.
The whole evening Vicki had swooped in like a mosquito Elena hadn’t accounted for. Just as Elena had finally gotten only a bit of alone time with Bonnie, Vicki followed behind. Bringing Bonnie drinks, asking her to dance, complimenting her, stealing her to talk.
It irritated Elena extremely.
She knew Vicki hated her, that was a known fact. But it didn’t mean she needed hijack Elena’s time with Bonnie either.
“I’m not brooding, Tyler,” She finally spoke, actively glaring holes into back Vicki’s head. Taking a sip from her drink, she placed her attention back on the boy in front of her. “I’m just… standing in a corner.”
“Very aggressively,” He shot back, raising his eyebrow. Elena huffed, shifting her brown eyes back to Bonnie and Vicki once more.
“She’s doing this on purpose.”
Tyler looked openly confused now, following Elena’s line of sight to the two girls.
“Bonnie?”
Elena shook her head immediately. “Not Bonnie, it’s never Bonnie. I meant Vicki. All night she’s been hovering around Bonnie like some… gnat. Vicki doesn’t even like girls. She just enjoys seeing me suffer.”
It was no secret Elena was in love with Bonnie, even a blind person could see it. Everyone could see it except for Bonnie it seemed. At least to Elena.
“For someone who still hasn’t confessed their feelings, you’re awfully jealous,” Tyler pointed out clearly enjoying Elena’s suffering which only appeared to make Elena more frustrated.
“Because I haven’t had the chance, Tyler! That’s the problem. Every time me and Bonnie get just one second alone, I can finally tell her how I feel. And boom. Here comes Vicki. Again.”
Tyler stared at Elena, then observing the two females across the room who were trading whispers.
He hated seeing her like this, how much she let insufficient things bother her, but being the best friend in the whole world as he would call himself he was going to fix this.
“I’ll be back,” He simply said.
Elena let out a little whine. “Tyler no this is serious, where are you going—“
“Just trust me,” Tyler replied over the thumping sound of music and chattering voices before drifting off into the crowd.
“That’s literally the worst thing to say to get someone to trust you!” Elena shouted back but watching as Tyler made his way over to Bonnie and Vicki.
Her eyes widened instantly. Oh no.
Oh no. What was he doing? Elena monitored while he spoke to Bonnie. What was he saying? Whatever he said, it couldn’t have been good because Bonnie eyes shifted towards Elena.
Without thinking, Elena ducked off toward the stairs, heading for the first bedroom door she’d saw.
She pushed it open, an indecent scene going on. Quickly she slammed the door shut, gagging. “Ew, ew, ew, ew.”
Her eyes were widened and filled with utter embarrassment.
“Guess you walked in on Tiki and Brandon.” A voice spoke behind her which made her freeze up. It wasn’t just any voice.
It was Bonnie’s voice.
How the hell did she get up here so fast?
Elena planning different ways to escape in her head, but absolutely found them useless. With everything in her body, she slowly turned around avoiding eye contact with the girl in front of her.
Elena’s fingers nervously tapping the rim of the plastic cup in her hand. “Uh… yeah. I wasn’t expecting.. well.. that.” A small, awkward smile formed at her lips before disappearing.
“Tyler said you wanted to talk?” Bonnie nodded her head toward the stairs. Elena paused again, mentally cursing Tyler out her in her head.
Elena could deny it. She could deflect. Tell Bonnie it was nothing, that the conversation didn’t matter anymore.
But what good would that be? After all, this what Elena wanted right? Alone time with Bonnie to tell her exactly how she felt, how much she meant to her.
That she hated pretending to not be in love with her.
Plus, what could be a better time? A dark hallway while two of their classmates banged just a few feet away from them.
“U-Uh,” Elena started, eventually looking Bonnie directly in the eye for the first time all night. “Yeah, I did. But can we go somewhere .. private?” She gestured toward the door where a particular loud thud followed afterwards.
“Right.. of course.” Bonnie agreed.
Elena nodded slowly, dragging her feet in direction of another room door. This time, Elena made sure to knock this time, not wanting another surprise.
Met with silence, Elena wearily twisted the knob, finding the room empty so she walked in.
Bonnie stepped in behind her, shutting the door before turning toward Elena, taking a step forward. “So…”
“What were you doing with Vicki?” Elena blurted before she could stop herself. Mentally scolding herself, she got a glimpse at Bonnie’s confused face.
“Vicki? We were just hanging out.”
Elena scoffed. “Yeah right. she practically all over you tonight. You can be honest with me, Bon. Do you two have something going on?”
“What? No,” Bonnie quickly denied the accusation. “No, we don’t. We’re just friends, Elena. But if we did.. why does it bother you so much?” Her tone was now teetering on something suspicious.
“What—no, no it doesn’t—I— it doesn’t bother me, Bonnie. I was just wondering because she—“ Elena instantly cut her stuttering short before she was able to say something stupid again.
Bonnie clearly didn’t buy it one bit. “Oh my gosh, Elena you’re jealous!” She gasped.
“What—I—that is insane, Bonnie. I am not jealous.” Elena stammered, avoiding eye contact with her once again.
“You are totally jealous, Lena.” Bonnie smirked, now inches away from Elena.
Elena could practically smell her perfume in her mouth and lungs, the smell of something sweet and cocoa.
“I—“
“Don’t worry, I actually find it kind of cute.”
“Bonnie! Wait what—“
“Oh please, you think I couldn’t tell that you were jealous? You were standing in the corner like someone stole your favorite toy whenever Vicki spoke to me.” Bonnie rolled her eyes although she found Elena’s flustered state adorable.
“You knew?” Elena eyed her questionably. It was a dumb question, a very stupid one.
Of course Bonnie knew. Elena wasn’t actually subtle with her piercing gaze every time Vicki stood too close to Bonnie.
“Obviously I knew. You weren’t exactly hiding it. It was actually pretty cute watching you brood in a corner.”
“Can everybody stop saying I was brooding?!? I wasn’t—“
“Just like I know you’re in love with me.” Bonnie cut Elena off with a bomb drop that made falter on her words, her brown eyes trailing Bonnie’s face in horror.
“You—what? How did you know—“
“So it’s true?”
Elena was stuck, she couldn’t find any words and her brain wasn’t exactly cooperating with her in this situation either.
But this is what she wanted right…? To admit to Bonnie that she loved her more than just a friend, more than anything. Now that she was here, why did it seem so .. challenging?
Elena took in a sharp breath, exhaling slowly before she nodded. Bonnie shook her head. “No. Absolutely not. I want you to say it. Not with your eyes, not with your little non-verbal gestures, your words Lena.”
“What do you want me to say Bonnie?” Elena snapped. “That I’m in love with you? That I’ve been in love with you for longer than I could remember? That every moment we’re together I think about kissing you knowing I can’t because you might not feel the same way? Or the fact that I want be with you for the rest of my life and—“
Elena finally paused, the words she’d said out loud finally catching up to her. Bonnie was silent now, looking directly at Elena’s paralyzed frame as she stared everywhere but at Bonnie.
“That’s… that’s exactly what I wanted you to say.”
Elena finally looked at Bonnie again, this time she was the one to take a step toward. “Then yes, I love you Bonnie Bennett. I’ve always loved you.”
“Elena I…” Bonnie faltered, and Elena swallowed thickly. This was it, Bonnie was going to tell her she didn’t feel the same way. That they were only friends and nothing else.
“Forget I said anything—“ She started again.
“Elena, I love you too.”
“Seriously, I knew you didn’t feel the same— what?” Elena stumbled. “What did you say?”
“I love you too, Elena. I loved you too for a long time. I was just waiting for you to finally say something.”
She felt the same way. She actually felt the same way. Elena couldn’t bring herself believe it. Her mouth couldn’t form any words. “Bonnie I don’t know what to say.”
“Don’t say anything. Just shut up and kiss me already,” Bonnie groaned, tired of all the theatrics. Elena let out a breathless, disbelieving laugh. “Now that is something I can do.”
She pulled Bonnie in her by her purple top, their lips capturing in a passionate dance. Elena’s hand wrapped around her waist, the other one slowly trailing up to Bonnie’s hair, fingers fisting in her brown, luscious curls.
The kiss lasted for almost more than a minute, Bonnie finally pulled away to catch a deep breath, lips swollen, her lipgloss subtly smeared across her chin.
“That was.. wow. Was that your first kiss since Matt?”
Elena rolled her eyes. “Shut up.”
“I Love you, Lena.”
“I love you more, Bon.”
