this image wasnât from the AU, but i thought that it fit nicely into this storyâs vague narrative so i also put it here. in this story, priparaâs virtual world likely doesnât exist so mario is just a human who used to be childhood friends with amari. what are they now? itâs hard to sayâŚ
but since these were drawn when there was only 3 episodes of idol land pripara to go off of, my depiction of mario doesnât match his actual personality as shown in the canon story.
by the way, naru and amari are solely meant to be friends in this story. there is no actual love rivalry going on here, just amari dealing with her confused feelings. mario, for his part, literally just thinks itâs funny that naru is so short.
Guitar Club AU! Featuring club President Naru and club Vice President Amari!
Takes place in a universe where everybody from the Pretty Rhythm Universe inhabit the same world. For the Rainbow Live characters specifically, this AU takes place directly after the events of that season. At first, Naru is merely looking for somebody to teach her how to play and she finds Amari. In reality, Amari has stopped playing for so long that sheâs a beginner herself now, but sheâs reluctant to admit that at first because she doesnât want to disappoint Naru. If she knew, Naru wouldnât want to be her friend, right⌠?
But the charade doesnât last very long at all, because despite everything, Amari wants friends who will like her for herself. She comes clean and apologizes for the misunderstanding and Naru, being Naru, doesnât understand why sheâs apologizing in the first place! In her eyes, they were already friends! And since she needs a guitar teacher and Amari wants to make friends, why not form a guitar club?? Both problems solved!

This AU is 3-4 years old now and i didnât think much about how the club actually came to be, so i drew this with the irony of two guitar newbie forming a âguitar clubâ in mind. The caption above is something that i just thought up now and im sticking to it.
Also, you might be wondering, âwhy doesnât Naru just ask Ito to teach her?â as i did for the first time while making this post. Since this is immediately after Rainbow Liveâs finale, i assume that Naru didnât want to ask Ito such a big favor when her family has just recently reconnected. Plus, i think that Naru undertaking this task herself was part of her efforts towards becoming more responsible and independent, which we see her start to do at the end.
I WILL say that Ito being worried about Naru did okay a role in Koiji deciding to help, though. This was something that i decided at the beginning, but i donât want it to be the main reason since iâm interested in exploring Naru and Koujiâs friendship as well.
thinking about idol animeâs obsession with allowing girls to skip the natural maturation process that comes along with puberty by enabling elementary school-aged children to shapeshift into a more mature appearance. the girls can grow up âphysicallyâ while skipping the dirty process of having to grow up âmentallyââwhich would otherwise jeopardize their purity, or innocence. in other words, the thing that makes idols desirable.
the ideal âidolâ is a child in the body of somebody no older than 17 years old. idol animes such as âcreamy mami,â âpripara,â and âlulutto lily,â use magic as a premise to achieve this more literally.

way before the episodes came out, i wondered what it might be like when amari and mario meet. i thought there might be this awkward in-between period where mario isnât playing the part of a villain but becomes one in opposing amari and her friends. he just wants amari to need him!
(amari trying to sneak mario out of pripara after he came to find her. they run into her new idol friends and theyâre all like, âwhoâs that guy.â amari lies about it some way)
mario: (about to say something embarrassing about amariâs past to her idol friends)
amari: (IMMEDIATELY charges toward him and clamps a hand on his mouth)
(Mario manages to remove her hand and begins talking again)
amari: AHHH (trying time drown out the sound of his voice)Â
amari: (starts shoving him toward an alleyway or smth) WELLBERIGHTBACK
(amari shoves him against a wall) what was that all about?! (some thing else, I donât know what yet)
mario: I donât care
am: I-I do!! and anyway, its MY business. it doesnât have anything to do with you
(He grabs her hand and pushes himself up off the wall. Amari steps back)
ma: itâs got everything to do with me
ma: how long do you think you can keep this up?
am: w-What do you mean
ma: this sparkling idol bullshit (laughs) I mean, give me a break
am: theyâre not like that
ma: (exasperated) everyone is like that. or, did you forget already?
am: ...
ma: youâll see. The second you stop playing by their rules
ma: but I can play too. Sâlong as you make it interesting
ma: so keep playing pretend with your little idol friends. I donât mind being the villain.
ma: we both know whoâll end up being right in the end
mario: (thinking) doesnât matter what she remembers. iâll make her understand
i have a lot of snippets of dialogue with amari and mario dating. i thought that theyâd work well together because mario pushes amari to face herself. to him, sheâs the strongest person in the world but needs to be reminded of it sometimes. heâll take her love wether it hits him soft like a kiss, or a punch to the face.
so yeah, i was thinking about a teen couple navigating relationship stuff for the first time. specifically, i wanted to depict how the two of them might handle conflict. amari is insecure and so afraid to express herself that sheâll let the anxiety rips her apart from the inside.

mario: i wonât know if you donât tell me
amari: (reluctantly tells him)
mario: (rebuttal)
amari: begins an impassioned, argumentative reply but stops) i donât want to fight about this!
mario: i do. if saying nothing makes you look like that, iâd rather we yelled at each other until weâre both blue in the face
mario: if you want something, take it. if youâve got something to say, say it.
ma: iâm not with you because i thought youâd turn into the perfect girlfriend
ma. iâm here because i love you. i wanna know whatâs in your mind

mario: the amari i know doesnât shut up. i like that about her

ma: (jokingly) what, donât think iâll beg? iâll do it
am: (relaxing a little, playing along) i-i donât hear anything...

am: (laughing) oh, gross
ma: pleasepleasepleasepleassplease o great amari bless us with your wisdom
am: stop!
(mario blows a raspberry on her cheek and she loses it laughing. heâs kinda holding her up on her side and she buries her face in his chest, still giggling)
afterward: amari has had her first fight with her boyfriend and the world didnât explode:
amari: ...perfect girlfriend, huh?
am: what he said before got me thinking. marios not the perfect boyfriend either
am: to be honest, heâs a lot different than what what i had in mind all those years ago. he should be perfect for me, is sort of what iâve been thinking. since i kinda created him
am: and then we would never fight. or maybe iâd still find some way to mess it all up.
am: but. i really like him the way he is now
am: when iâm with him, thereâs no room for worry. itâs like iâm caught up in his pace or something and iâm only thinking about the present. what i want to say, without being scared of how heâll take it.
am: sometimes itâs just because heâs pissing me off that much, hehe
am: and sometimes itâs because weâre having too much fun
am: or, he already knows what i want and it feels like heâs just waiting for me to take it. i feel freer somehow

Amari: then theyâll just think Iâm weird!
Mario: so do you feast on the blood of the innocent now? thats pretty badassÂ
Amari NO I still eat normal foodÂ
(that is, when she can keep it down. Which hasnât happened since sheâd been turned, but amari doesnât want him teasing her about that, too)
(Mario eyes her own lack of a lunch and continues eating his, which is mostly comprised of sweet breads. Itâs been so long since sheâs had any she canât help but stare)
(she meets marioâs gaze by accident and he gives her a teasing grin)
Mario: Like what you see?
Amari: whâ!!
Mario: The bread, I mean
Amari: You did not
(he offers a piece to her)
Mario: want some?
(her stomach growls at the site even though the smell just makes her nauseous now)
Amari: iâm good
(mario looks at her for a moment, studying her face, but then he shrugs and goes back to eating)
(a moment later, he perks up in his seat and turns to amari ready with a question forming on his lipsâ)
