Notes from the Manny press conference:
Major aspect of taking the job was how aligned he, RJ, and the Sedins were
Was asked basically about why we lost so much in recent years, said he hasn't been in Vancouver in 6 years, talked about culture and showing up with the right mindset and body language
Is aware that all teams use words like accountability and culture and compete, is going to be very clear on what the team's standards are and what their definition of those terms are
Called last season (in Abby) humbling, is difficult to win consistently
Easy to have good vibes when you're winning, important to keep that same focus and energy up in tough stretches
Important to acknowledge that there will be tough times - that's when the character of your team will really show
Expectations will be the same for everyone - older guys can't expect to get away with slacking because they're established
Want players who want to be in Vancouver, are comfortable with being uncomfortable and are willing to change their habits
Looking for coaching staff to embody the same values - motivated to come in and get better, want to teach young players and have the ability to communicate
Captain will emerge from the group based on what they do everyday - attitude, body language, respect, etc., doing that consistently instead of just paying lip service
On ice stuff - the NHL is a fast league, his systems are fast, intense, high energy, premium on execution
NHL is a hard league to grow in, important to give players coming up a structure and constant feedback, need to ride the wave and coaches' job is to help them find their game in the NHL and become consistent
Looking for coaching staff to embody the same values - motivated to come in and get better, want to teach young players and have the ability to communicate
Caleb - Fool's errand to plan for something that hasn't happened yet, they'll cross that bridge if they get to it, but it was part of the hiring process. There's an understanding in their household that first and foremost, he's dad, but if they want hockey-talk, kids decide if they want to talk to coach or dad, Caleb always wants to talk to coach.
Would treat Caleb like any other player, understands the challenges, brings up the rule again, Caleb has the wherewithal to separate the two
From RJ (this is the only question he was asked lmao) - In terms of him, the Sedins, Manny all being former Canucks, respect for the players is more important than that, thinks that as soon as you go "when i was there we did this" walls go up
Manny again - aware of the implications of being the first HC of South Asian descent, but focuses on being the best coach he can be. Understands the importance in the wider context and the support he gets, but doesn't put a great deal of emphasis on it
On Raty being viewed as potential upside - bad at predicting the future, but there's potential there to be a quality everyday NHLer. Coaches' job to help players find their niche and find what their game is at the NHL level. He's good in the dot, and buying into and accepting certain roles is part of becoming an NHLer
On Petey and his fall - hasn't spoken to him yet, part of coaching is finding what makes players tick and drawing out the best in them
Motivating a team that's going to be losing - not evaluating guys based on wins and losses, understands that the NHL is based on those, but their focus has to be on the process of getting better. Again, easy to have good vibes when you're winning, finding that energy when you're not is part of that process. Helping guys find the joy in hockey is part of the task
