When we talk about others, even children, we take into consideration their social skills first. Someone who has good communication skills come across as more approachable and is usually seen as more successful by most people. In short, in our society, extroverts have it easy. They can party all night..spend all day in board rooms and still have an active family and social life. They are the ones who get heard. So its almost natural that we look for these positive traits in our children from day one. What about the introverts? Those silent souls in a room who may be noticing everything and everyone but are hardly heard.. The quiet, shy, reclusive ones. .? We, as a society, are notorious for giving them a hard time. Even children. I have seen parents forcing their introverted children into joining boisterous dance classes or debate classes and even social play dates only to ensure that they are ‘cured’ of this shyness. They do not understand that this is not a disease to be cured. It is simply how they are. By forcing them to turn into extroverts , parents achieve nothing more than bringing more misery into their lives. Try and understand your child. I agree it is wonderful to see your child up there on stage gathering applause. But not every child is meant for it. Applaud the child on stage but don’t push your own child towards something they don’t want. If your child is an introvert, help him in honing his own skill set. Introverts are usually very focused and can attain excellence in individual tasks. Introduce them to solitary skills..Teach them music, chess, painting, writing. .anything that they seem inclined towards. Once they feel accepted in their introversion, they will reach hitherto unknown levels of success. Some of the most famous people in the world have been introverts. So what if they can’t tell the best jokes at parties or dance the night away with strangers? They are blessed with a quietness within that can unleash tremendous power. The world needs both kinds. Can you imagine a world without thinkers? Or a world where everyone only wants to be heard? Who will listen to the talkers if we don’t accept introverts? Who will think when everyone else is acting? Every Child deserves to be what he is. As we encourage and applaud the extroverted children on sports events and concerts, so we should accept and encourage the introverted kids to do what they love best. Like an image rightly proclaimed, you cannot judge the ability of a fish by asking it to climb a tree.. So let’s stop trying to create clones of perfection. Let’s accept and nurture introverts as we would do for extroverts and see unlimited success follow!
