instead of his entertainment growing at the way matteo stares him down following the dirt, jaw locked and shovel planted, alistairās suspicions become more solid. without direct light to his eyes alistair couldnāt be certain, but matteoās pupils were far too wide even for the dark.
āwhatās up withāā he grunts, words cut off by matteo driving the shaft of his shovel into his hip and knocking him a half-step off balance. digging his shovel into the dirt again, alistair throws more dirt behind him, this time not coating matteo in any.
āyouāll have to hit me harder than that if you want me to believe you mean it.ā the warning only serves to make alistair want to do it again.
while he doesnāt catch what odette says to matteo, only her correction on what is polite and how she will make an exception for him, he does catch the tail end of what matteo mutters in response, but only barely.
until she gets hungry.
before he can help it, alistair looks up, confusion on his face, unsure if he actually heard anything at all as matteo continues to dig, heart spiking nonetheless. turning his gaze back to the dirt, he takes care not to look at odette until the moment has passed. matteo couldnāt know. if he knew, alistair imagines things would look very different right now. a true vampire versus slayer show down. unless he doesnāt care. no. even if he didnāt, the way odette got under matteoās skin would have made any reason enough to strike. therefore, alistair determines, he was hearing things. nothing new. nothing to be concerned about. same game, same rules, same tricks.
stopping to make way for odetteās help, taking the brief rest it offers him, alistair cannot help the snort that comes out of him when she follows in his steps and coats matteo in dirt. hair, shoulders, clinging to his neck where sweat had gathered; alistair finds childish humor in matteoās dirtied appearance,Ā
āletās go easy on him odette." a brief memory of matteo saying 'you don't get to be careful with me' flashes in alistair's mind. "heās already looking glassy eyed, if weāre too mean he might run away crying.ā while thereās no fighting the amused look that appears on his face, alistairās words werenāt purely for entertainment. a quiet probe to see how or if matteo responds to the comment on his eyes. it could be the low light. knowing matteo, thatās all it likely was and heightened emotions, but⦠alistair didnāt know matteo anymore. six years was enough to change anyone, it was for him.Ā
george was the youngest of the group, and said to be both incredibly naive and deeply brave.
alistair takes in odetteās words quietly. the slayers before them had paid the price all previous slayers had paid to the hunger. a price alistair had outwitted without knowing thatās what heād done. or maybe he hadnātā alistair digs deeper, harder, not hearing any exhaustion his body gives as his thoughts lock on the tithes a slayer is forced to give. what happened to a slayer successfully devoured by the hunger? did george pay a worse price than death for his naive bravery?Ā it was something alistair wondered often in the void, before he forgot to question why he was there. did it end with their death? was it the same as what he went through? was it worse?Ā
alistair hopes it wasā another too careless shovel, hands taking on splintersā if the price george and all other slayers paid beforehand was worse than the one alistair paid, then in someway that meant heād won. not wholly, but enough to say so. enough to convince himself that his vow to make the hunger be the one that pays this time was a vow that'd be proven true in spite of all his other doubts.Ā
āif we find nothing in good olā georgeās graveā¦ā he follows off of matteo, ādo you know where the rest are buried? if they lived longer, one of them might have learned more; the journal had to come from someone to end up where it did.ā
perhaps its callous, talking about the previous slayers like they were nothing more than carcasses to pick at like buzzards, but it matters little to alistair. he wants answers; needs them. if his grave was filled with more than air, heād have expected the next generation to do the same.
