Barred Tiger Salamander
paedomorphic adult (neotenic sexually-mature adult retaining aquatic larval-form gilled body) eating a terrestrial adult (sometimes the aquatic adults can be larger than typical land-dwelling terrestrial adults. some populations of barred/western tiger salamander, especially at high elevations in Rocky Mountains, more frequently select for neotenic aquatic adults, which can inhabit cirques and alpine lakes and avoid cold winter surface temperatures by remaining active and retreating to relatively consistent milder water temperatures in these lakes without freezing, so it suits them better to just remain fully aquatic their entire life. they don’t fully transform into the more recognizable land-dwelling version yet they are fully capable of reproduction despite appearing like a larva. for comparison, you can see a “normal”-sized larva at bottom left in this photo.)

this mud dauber wasp (Sceliphron caementarium) seemed distressed about something in her clay nest. Turns out it had been commandeered by a keyhole wasp (Pachodynerus nasidens), who was now aggressively asserting ownership
keyhole wasps, which hunt weevils and other small beetles, will opportunistically nest in any sort of small cavity (such as a keyhole). The existing literature on this species doesn’t say anything about taking over other wasp‘s nests, only that they sometimes refurbish abandoned nests, but I guess this one didn’t get the memo.
This isn't the worst of their mischief though- they also have a habit of building nests that clog up the airspeed measuring instruments in planes and have caused several fatal crashes.
(Florida, 10/6/21)
Look how the mud dauber moves at first, slipping up closer and then flinching back, like a cat investigating something new and potentially dangerous.
This is one of those videos that’s good for remembering, oh yeah, bugs are just little animals. With added features like cute tappy antennae that go faster when they’re excited.

Hey, Oregon Fish & Wildlife Commission is taking public comments on coyote killing contests in preparation for a December 16 vote. I think it goes without saying that there shouldn’t be any contests involving seeing how many coyotes (or other wildlife) you can shoot, and a ban would be well overdue. You can make a public comment here: https://secure.everyaction.com/gbh-_Wo1qUO1aVcnWmX6Pw2 (Reblogs definitely welcome!)
We got in a transport today from our rural shelter partners (history: pups abandoned on person's property) and one was a 9 week old puppy with "a swollen face and unable to use his legs." They thought she was sick with something.
The face is because she is a shar-pei mix
Though I admit she does look like she ate a spicy sky raisin, but she's been like this for a week. It's just her face.
The legs however...
I palpated one limb and felt a very thickened, broken femur, and on the other the femur as a whole had gone walkabout so I thought dislocated.
Vet agreed with me so we took rads.
I mean, that left leg is *technically* not dislocated. Technically. The break on the right is so old there's nothing we can do.
Puppy is going to foster for a month to build muscle in the right leg to, and I quote my vet, "to give her a leg to stand on" since we will be amputating the left.
Also, how long do you think it will take the algorithm to incorrectly flag this?
She... she fucking rebuilt her femurs??? The one floating off into nowhere, the dog built a whole new femur and even a whole new greater trochanter????
Original rad on the left, most recent on the right.
Our vet sent the rads to her orthopedic surgery mentor and he responded with " I believe in God now"
If you look closely, you can see that this dog is currently in possession of 3 whole femurs like a goddamned overachiever
