if you have recommendations for good color pencils, let me know, I don't like the set I have (winsor & newton studio collection) - they are too hard and the lighter colours don't layer well (though I've read reviews where they were described as soft and buttery, that's not my experience)

I will get back to the suggestions you've given me, but was swatching and playing with the caran d'ache set again. On the right I put down some red / dark red brush pen and just went over that with the crayons.

I do love these colours, I'm just not used to using these as much - I'll have to experiment with them some more.
