also happy belated birthday to hyunjin my beloved thank you for for the beautiful gift of your voice and your heart but pls tell me you kissed the brick before you threw it~~
She had never seen something so beautiful in her lifeâwith the exception of the handsome guy standing next to her.
The aurora moved in waves, dancing across the night sky in hypnotizing movements. She wanted to keep her attention on it, but she couldnât help but to continue to cast worried glances in his direction.
In a few hours, Hyunjin would be twenty-six. A year closer to thirty than he was twenty. The thought had weighed heavily on him. Over the past few weeks, anytime anyone mentioned Hyunjinâs birthday, he didnât seem at all excited.
If anything, it seemed that he had dreaded the day coming.
Y/n knew his last birthday didnât have the best lead up. It had tainted the day for him, leaving him with pieces of his heart to have to place delicately back together.
The woman he thought he was going to spend the rest of his life with had left him. Had made him to believe that she loved him. But she tore him apart. Broke the man that believed nothing had been wrong between them with six words.
âItâs you. I canât do this.â
She had left hastily after that, flying back home to japan and blocking Hyunjinâs number.
It was two days before his twenty-fifth birthday.
That was the first birthday Hyunjin spent alone.
This year, Hyunjin had booked a solo trip to Iceland. He had sheepishly asked Y/n if she wanted to come.
Y/n knew it was still too soon for Hyunjin to put his all into another relationship. Especially since the two of them had been friends for so long. He had insecurities and so did she. In truth, a part of her still loved her ex just as she knew a part of Hyunjin would always love his.
With this in mind, they had agreed to go slow.
But looking at him now, the sadness in his eyes as he watched the light dance across the sky made her heart ache.
Hyunjin seemed to feel her stare, his dark eyes softening as he turned his gaze towards her.
His nose was starting to turn pink, lips swollen from where he had been licking them due to the chilled air continuously drying them out.
His eyes stayed on hers, until he couldnât bear it anymore and let them fall to the snow covered deck beneath them.
âTalk to me Hyun.â
Hyunjin had never really let himself cry all that much around her. She understood it was a vulnerability thing and in truth, she preferred not to cry around him either.
But when he looked back up at her, eyes welling with tearsâher heart ached.
She knew that pain. A year wasnât near enough time to get over a betrayal like that. Y/n knew that herself all too well.
With their height difference, she couldnât quite pull him into the hug she had wanted to. Hyunjin, who wasnât normally fond of hugs or touch at allâmelted into her. His arms wrapped around her, hands gripping onto her as if she would disappear at any moment and become mere smoke between his fingers.
A small sound escaped him as he stifled a sob, but she could feel the way his body shook against hers.
âI know Hyunjin. I know and Iâm so sorry.â
He cries then, letting the choked back sobs rip through him. She remembers what that feeling was like. How her heart hurt so bad she felt like she was going to die.
He of all people didnât deserve that.
She didnât deserve that.
And one day, she knew Hyunjin would finally realize that he didnât. That he deserved to be loved fully, despite the arguments, despite flaws, despite his tight schedule.
Love was messy.
It wasnât perfect all the time.
His ex wanted perfection and he had so desperately wanted and tried to give it to her.
But he couldnât, no matter what he saidâher love for him was gone.
Hyunjinâs cries softened, his tears soaking the shoulder of her jacket as she was certain hers had the front of his coat.
When he pulled back, the wetness gathering beneath his eyes and wetting his cheeks glistened in the moonlight. She gently cupped his face, wiping every remaining tear away.
Hyunjin closed his eyes, his breath dancing in the chilled night air as he exhaled. Her heart thrummed as he leaned into her touch.
Oh how she wished to speak the three words she had felt on the tip of her tongue for so long. How she yearned to be the one that consumed his thoughts. How she wondered how his lips would feel against hers and if it would heal parts of him the way she knew it would her.
But she doesnât move.
Not until he takes her hand into his gloved one.
Not until heâs leading her back inside.
Not until they are both shedding their outer layers silently and then departing to separate bathrooms.
Y/n soaks in the tub, the tears finding their way to her cheeks once more as she catches a glimpse of the night sky as she leans her head back.
Hyunjin on the other side of the house lets his head hang between his shoulders. His eyes pooling with tears as he lifts his gaze to stare into the foggy mirror.
What was he doing?
Why was he letting this torture him so much?
He thought about her, not his ex for once, but Y/n.
How she held him, how she looked at him, how she spoke to him. Every action filled with the warmth and care he had wanted from his ex.
But she wasnât his ex and he wasnât Y/nâs. They were two people who held feelings for one another but their scars built walls between them.
Or had it just been his?
Hyunjin thought long and hard for a moment. He doesnât remember the last time she had mentioned her ex. He knew it was still a sore spot; itâs why she understood him wanting to take things extremely slow between the two of them.
He feared saying the wrong thing and her walking away. He feared not showing her love and her feeling unloveable. He feared his schedule would put distance between them. That long distance would break them.
But then, he inhaledâdark eyes meeting familiar ones in the reflection before him.
Those things had drove his ex awayâhad led to hurtful things being spat at him. Had led to his heart being torn from his chest exactly a year ago.
But they didnât drive Y/n away.
Because she was still there. She had always been there, supporting him from the shadows, being a shoulder to lean on. She showed him love and care when he felt like he didnât deserve it.
She had feelings for him, and here he wasâaching for the love he lost and the one he was scared to lose.
Hyunjin finds her on the couch. He only sees the back of her head at first but when he rounds the corner, coming to stand infront of her, he notices how cozy she looks. Her eyes flicker from the fire to his. He doesnât miss the way her eyes soften or the small smile on her lips. It was never out of pity that the features of her face softened.
Itâs because he was her safe place, just like she was his.
Hyunjin takes a seat next to her, his elbows on his knees as he leans forward. His own gaze focuses on the flames dancing before the two of them.
Neither of them say anything, just basking in the silence and the crackling of the fire.
Then he finds his voice.
âIn truth, I donât know what to say,â Hyunjin whispered, referring to her invitation to speak to him earlier.
He tilts his head towards her, eyeing her hands that are toying with one another on her lap. He reaches out slowly, placing his large hand over hers. She doesnât hesitate to intertwine their fingers and Hyunjin feels his heart lighten.
âIâm not okay. I donât know how long it will be until I can truly say that I am and mean it,â he whispers, looking from their hands to her eyes.
âBut I have had a lot said to me and a lot done to me that terrifies me Y/n. I want to let you in. I want to give you the love you deserve. I want to be someone deserving of you. But I have demons Iâm still fighting. I still have things Iâm trying to work through. In good conscience, I cannot ask you to be mine when I know that all of these ghost are still haunting me.â
She smiles at himâsad but beautiful, âI know. Thatâs why Iâll wait. Until you feel you are where you need to be. But I just ask one thing,â she says, leaning forward.
Hyunjinâs breath catches at the inches that have disappeared between them.
He nods, urging her to continue.
âYou donât have to fight those ghosts alone. Let me be there for you, as a friend, as someone who loves and cares about you. I had to go through that alone,â she says, referring to her own past heartbreak.
He sees the tears beginning to pull in her eyes as her mind takes her back to that moment of isolation.
âBut you donât have to Hyun. Iâm right here. Let me be with you as a friend. And when we are both ready,â she whispers, âthen we can try for something more.â
Hyunjinâs heart swells, he reaches for her, pulling her into him.
He doesnât know how long they stay like that, just holding eachother. The promise of something more to come later lingering between them. But for now, Hyunjin holds her and makes a wishâeven praysâthat he can get better. That they can both heal. That they can make it through the storm together, because they were already standing in the rain.
Then Hyunjin, and only then, can he finally allow himself to love her fully.

ă masterlist â backtrack ă
Once she made sure Chan ate, Y/n left him to his workâwishing him luck on his presentation the following evening.
He promised to reach out to her as soon as it was over and the two of them parted ways with a longing look. One that was never addressed by either of them.
Y/n lets out a breath as she leaves the studio and makes her way down the hall. The two of them had been in a âwill they wonât theyâ dance around one another for years. But Y/n, was starting to think the âwonât theyâ was becoming more and more likely.
She was content with having Chan as her friend, at least there wouldnât be any messy feelings to come between them, but a part of her would always long for him.
Sometimes she thought sheâd catch him staring at her, but then she just ruled it to be a product of her imagination. She wanted to be seen, really seen, by him.
She just wasnât sure if that was entirely possible.

synopsis: the truth comes to life when she reaches her breaking point
or Felix and Y/nâs daughter wonât sleep and and exhaustion leads to a long talk between her and Felix
themes: angst, exhaustion, mentions of not being a good mom, reader is in her head, felix acknowledges his faults, mostly conversation, couple kisses, hurt/comfort
The soft whines coming from her daughter only after five minutes of undisturbed silence had tears prickling at the back of her eyes.
She whispered to the child, silently praying to God that she would close her eyes and rest so that she could as well.
Even if it was just for ten minutes.
She cast a glance at the blonde next to her, his neck pillow not doing very good at supporting his head in his sleep. She was grateful he was able to catch some shut eye after the weekend he had just had. But if she wasnât successful in quieting their daughter, he would soon be pulled from his sleep.
Unfortunately, her daughter grew restlessâher tiny face scrunching up. Her skin reddened and then the tears came.
And then the cries.
She sighed as she sat straighter in her seat, her lower back and arms aching as she tried her best to bounce the distressed baby space.
She caught sight of some others in first class, some of them giving her sympathetic looksâothers casting glares in her direction. Her heart dropped as Felix shifted next to her, his long lashes fluttering open at the sound of their childâs cry.
âHey,â he says, voice deep and rough with the remains of sleep and eyes slightly unfocused as he took in the distressed child.
âLet me take her for a while baby.â
She shook her head, pulling the whining child closer to her chest.
âYouâve had a long weekend Lix. Get some rest. I can take care of her.â
Felixâs frown deepened as he looked between her and his child.
âIt has been for you too Y/n. Youâve done amazing and I have felt awful for how busy this weekend was with fashion week and not being able to help you care for her.â
âI havenât done amazing,â she whispers, turning her head away from her husband so that he doesnât see the tears welling in her eyes.
âY/nâ.â
As if sensing her distress, their baby begins to cry harder, nearly screaming.
Felix reaches for her and Y/n hands her over. He shifts a little in his seat, leaning over to where he has more space to bounce the baby. When that doesnât work, he gets up, eyes tired as he whispers lowly to their screaming child, walking her towards the back of the planeâputting distance between him and the others.
Y/nâs head falls into her hands, rubbing her face harshly.
What makes it worse is that within five minutes, their daughter has calmed down. She turns in her seat, finding the childâs face tucked into Felixâs neck, the sound of him humming softly even reaching her ears.
Another wave of tears spills over.
When Felix returns, their daughter is fast asleepâlike she hadnât been screaming her head off only a few minutes prior. She doesnât turn to look at them as Felix takes his place next to her. She just silently criesâstaring out the window and counting down the minutes until she is able to lock herself in their shared bathroom and cry under a shower head that she has been desperate to feel for the past 48 hours.
Felix tries touching her but it doesnât bring her comfort like it usually does.
They donât say much to one another for the rest of the flight. Felix tries but Y/n doesnât want to risk waking their baby. Especially since this is the longest she has slept for a while.
When they return home, Felixâs assistants help him to unload both of their bags before Felix sends them away. Y/n takes the opportunity to slip upstairs. Her baby was still fast asleep in Felixâs arms, only having woken up a couple of times from the plane to the car when Felix placed her in the car seat. But her little fist wrapped around his pinky and she fell right back to sleep.
Y/n takes a much needed showerâletting herself release the tears that she had been holding back all weekend.
An hour later, she emerges from the en-suite; towel-dried hair and a dark robe wrapped around her. She finds Felix on the bed, mindlessly scrolling through his phone but his eyes donât seem to be following nor paying attention to whatever heâs looking at.
He looks up though as she steps into the room, his dark eyes wide and round with worry at seeing her red eyes. His phone falls to the bed as he stands. In a few steps he has her wrapped in his arms and the tears she had thought she was done shedding hit even harder. He spoke soothing words that she was certain he spoke to their child.
When the tears had slowed, Felix took a step back from her, taking her face into his hands. Felixâs movements were slow and lovingâkissing every tear away before pulling back and pressing a soft kiss to her lips.
âI knew I would be bad at this,â she whispers sadly.
Felix frowned at that, âBad at what my love?â
âAt being a mother.â
The confession hung heavy between the two of them. She could see the way her words made Felix frown.
âThat is not true.â
She shook her head, growing frustrated as she wiggled out of his hold before taking a seat on the edge of the bed.
âI donât calm her like you do. When sheâs with me, she doesnât sleep. I had one job this weekend and that was to take care of her while you focused on your job. But I still needed your help. You almost missed waking Felix! You almost missed the chance of a lifetime because I am incapable of taking care of her. What kind of mother does that make me? What kind of wife does that make me,â she sobs.
Felix falls to his knees taking her clasped hands into his.
âLook at me Y/n.â
He whispers her name so softly that she awful for breaking down in front of him like this.
His own tears have escaped his eyes as he holds her gaze.
âYou are doing the best that you can Y/n. This is our first time doing something like this. Itâs not always going to go the way we want it to and itâs not always going to go to plan. I didnât realize how bad it was for you this whole timeâespecially this weekend and for that I am deeply sorry,â his voice wavers.
âLix. You have nothing to apologize for. I had just hoped it was all in my head but I guess this weekend got to be too much andâI just couldnât soothe her and it makes me feel awful that I have to trouble you when you are so tired because I canâtâ.â
âYou are never troubling me Y/n,â he whispers as he leans closer to her.
âYou and I created her together. You and I take care of her together. You and I are in this together. You do not have to do everything on your own. Iâm right here. I want to take care of the both of you. So please do not feel like you need to keep all of the hard parts of raising a child to yourself because you donât. I will do anything and everything to help you Y/n,â he sniffled, bringing her hands to his lips before pressing a wet kiss to them.
âWe do this together from now on, okay?â
Y/n nods, letting Felix pull her into another soft kiss.
âAnd, you are an amazing mother,â he kisses her cheek.
âAnd wife,â another peck to her nose.
âThat any man could ever ask for. I am so lucky to have you. Our daughter is so lucky to have you. So please, donât keep this to yourself anymore. Come to me and let me help you carry the weight, yeah?â
She nods, taking Felixâs face into her hands before kissing him. He pulls her closer before a soft whine sounds from down the hall. He smiles against her lips, pressing a kiss to her nose and then her forehead.
âIâve got it baby,â he kisses her again before pulling away and heading towards the door.
âGet some sleep my love. Iâll wake you when dinner is ready.â
So she lets him go. She doesnât jump to stop him. She listens and lays her head against the pillow, her heart light and the lingering heat of her husbandâs lips on her skinâeager for some much needed rest.
â he loves pressing close to you, the softness of your body making it easier to fall into a deep sleep

Chan hadnât messaged her the rest of the day, which wasn't at all like him. Yes, he was quiet, reserved, and not the best conversationalist at times but heâd usually message her back as soon as she reached out to him.
But her messages went unanswered.
Y/n had been worried when he stormed outâapologetic on Minhoâs behalf for being so blunt when questioning him.
She couldnât help but to feel a familiar heaviness when he didnât answer her.
It had taken a year after his accident to not be worried about where he was or having to worry if he was at The Pit or not.
The Pit was known to be a whirlwind of speed and crime. The cops knew thisâbut they also knew that those involved would rather die than to give up any information to the police. It wasnât just racers involved but mostly those who had enough money to bet on the races.
Races would be an opportunity for scouting. Drug lords sending their minions out with a wad of cash to sway the winner into working for them. Thatâs how Y/n had met Chan, in the wrong place at the wrong time.
But he looked different than the others, he didnât seem to enjoy it but rather it was a matter of circumstance.
The two of them met on a rainy evening in March.
It was dark and she had been out too long. The smell of the rain and the rubber of her tires mixed as she got out of the car. Y/n had parked a little farther that evening, all of the spots near her place had been occupied. She knew of an alleyway that would put her near her door and of the five years she lived there, she never had a problem with making it from her car to her door without any trouble.
However, that evening, over the patter of the rain, Y/n heard voices speaking. She had never been particularly good at Koreanâeven after living in the country for so long. She heard shouts, before a body was thrown to the ground in front of her.
She gasped, the sound barely heard over the rain as she took a step backâhiding behind the side of the building next to her own as another man made an appearance.
âDeliver on time. Otherwiseâ.â
Thatâs as much as she had made out over the rainâwatching as the attacker retreated from the alleyway and leaving the man on his hands and knees. The man hissed out of frustration and painâpunching the wet pavement beneath him with a sickening crack.
She could see the blood from where she stood.
Taking a step out from behind the wall, she moved towards the man.
âAre you okay?â
The manâs eyes met hers and for a moment, time simply stopped. His lip was busted, streaks of red flowing from his swollen nose and down his chin. His sharp eyes held a venom she knew wasn't necessarily directed at her.
She asked him again, and the man just laughed?
He stood from the ground, a groan leaving him. He ran a bare forearm over his nose and mouth, spreading the crimson.
There was a look of amusement on his face despite the injuries.
âIâm sorry you had to see that,â he says, a thick Australian accent flowing from his lips.
Y/n shakes her head, âWould you believe me if I said itâs not the first time Iâve seen something like this?â
He looked at her perplexed and huffed another laugh.
âI should go,â he starts before moving to walk towards a bike at the other end of the alley that was laying sideways.
âNot like that, you arenât.â
He had turned to her, eyebrows raised in surprise.
âSorry?â
Y/n motioned to the motorcycle, âThe rain is getting heavier. Not to mention you got rocked hard. Your left eye is already starting to swell.
He glared at that, but before he could say anything, she was doing something insane.
Something Minho would certainly kill her for.
âMy place is right here. At least get cleaned up and wait out the rain before attempting to drive with that eye.â
She didnât say anything more as she turned to unlock her door. She pushed it open, casting a glance back at the man to see if he was following. He was hesitant, but followed slowly behind her.
The two of them climbed the steps in silence.
âYou can use the bathroom. Iâll grab something from Minhoâsâ.â
âGrab what from myâHEY,â Minho yelped, causing the stranger to flinch.
Her roommate eyes the man dripping wet behind her.
âJeez Y/n. What did he do to you?â
She rolled her eyes, motioning the stranger into the warmth of their apartment.
âWaitâdonât I know you?â
The stranger seemed to tense next to her at this.
âI donât believe so.â
âNo, I definitely know you,â Minho hums, his eyes roaming over the stranger.
âMin stop interrogating,â Y/n scolds as she kicks off her shoes, motioning for the stranger to do the same.
âGrab him some clothes please. Iâm going to show him to the bathroom.â
Minho grumbles but doesnât fight back, his eyes going to the stranger once more before disappearing down the hall.
âIâm sorry about him. You arenât the first person he believes that he knows ,â she smiles at him.
He seems to relax at that.
âI didnât get your name,â she mentions as she leads him towards the bathroom.
âItâs Chan.â
She turns to him, a soft smile on her face as she holds out her hand, âY/n.â
He takes her hand, his grip firm against hers. She ignored the way her hand fit perfectly in his before pulling away.
She showed him where the towels were, taking the change of clothes from her roommate as he passed before shooing him back into the living room before he could ask any questions.
âYell if you need anything,â she offered a kind smile before shutting the door.
âYou canât just bring in strays Y/n,â Minho sighs, a troubled look on his face.
âWhat was I supposed to do? Leave him bleeding and wet on the street? Have him ride his bike in the rain?â
Minhoâs brow furrowed, âUh yeah? Thatâs exactly what you should have done. You donât know who this man is.â
Y/n sighed as she washed her hands before moving to prepare dinner.
âI didnât leave you on the street did I?â
âThatâs different,â Minho pouts.
âLook,â she sighs as she turns towards him, âI overheard something about a delivery. I figured since youâve been investigating the illegal activity at The Pit that he might be able to bring light to the case.â
Minhoâs eyes widened, âThatâs where I know him from! Iâve definitely seen him there before. I knew he looked familiar.â
Y/n moved to make a meal for both her and Chan, putting the broth into the pot before turning on the burner. The blue flames danced as the broth began to bubble.
âDid you get his name?â
Y/n hummed, hearing the sound of water still running down the hall.
âChan.â
âOh my gosh,â Minho jumped up from the couch, making his way to the kitchen.
âYouâre joking right?â
Y/n shook her head, turning towards her shocked roommate.
âY/n this is insane! Heâs one of theâno, the best driver at The Pit. Do you know how dangerous it is having him in our apartment?â
If the scene from earlier in the alleyway was anything to go by, then she knew that it was highly likely that having him at their place was a recipe for disaster. But he may know something that will be useful for Minhoâs investigation.
âI know I just overheard talk in the alleyway,â she whispered as the sound of the shower came to a stop.
âSomething about a package being delivered.â
Minho sat back in his chair, hands running over his face.
âY/n, you brought a runner into our home. Youâve officially lost it,â her friend huffs in disbelief.
âBut thatâs the thing Min,â she begins, taking the soup off of the stove to serve it into two bowls, âHe got beat up. Which means he isnât doing his job right. Something is up with him. Maybe itâs not only your breakthrough but a way for him to get out of whatever scheme he was roped into.â
Minho thought for a moment, but before he said anythingâa freshly showered Chan rounded the corner.
He was drying the back of his long onyx hair with a towelâhis eyes shifting between Y/n, Minho and then the soup.
She slides the bowl in his direction and motions for him to sit down. He mumbles a small âthanksâ before taking a seat at the bar across from her.
She eyed his bruises and cuts, a pain shooting through her just at the mere sight of them.
âEat up and then I can tend to your wounds,â she motions towards the bowl.
Chan opens his mouth to protest but Minho stops him.
âListen Chan,â he begins, âOne thing we donât do under this roof is argue with Y/n. The sooner you learn that the better your life will be.â
Y/n smiles at that.
âHeâs right. Eat up.â
And Chan listens.
After the two of them eat, Minho retires to his roomâmostly due to the glare Y/n keeps shooting in his direction.
Y/N retrieves the first aid kit. The two sit in silence as she bandages his hands. Itâs when sheâs applying ointment to his busted lip that she takes the time to observe him closely.
Thereâs a far away and troubled look in his eyes. He doesnât look at herâavoiding her inquisitive gaze.
Her mouth moves before her mind can even think of the repercussions of her question.
âYou donât want to be in this do you,â she asks him.
Chanâs eyes donât meet hers, âI donât know what you mean.â
She lowers her hand slightly from applying the ointment.
âA package needing to be delivered? You getting beat up in the alleyway? You arenât exactly being a very good runner are you? But itâs on purpose.â
Chan is silent for a moment and Y/n doesnât pry further.
âItâs hard not to get wrapped up in it when you race.â
âIâm not saying it isnât. Believe me,â she sighs as she screws the cap back on the ointment before wiping her hands.
âBut would you want a way out?â
Chanâs eyes return to hers and for a moment there is hope but then it leaves as fast as it came.
âHow?â
âStart by telling Minho everything you know.â
And thatâs how it started. The information fell from Chanâs lips easily. Some people were busted and taken into custody with Minhoâs tip.
The three of them worked in together to try and bring down the Drug Lord Chan had been working for.
And thatâs how it started.
The ending you still couldnât think about, but Chan was safe and that was all that mattered. But he wouldnât be safe from her if he didnât pick up the phone soon.
âSomeone avoiding you?â
The newcomer startles her. She turns to find Jisung, a mutual friend of her and Chan. Heâs got his laptop tucked under his left arm, a nearly finished iced coffee in the other.
âYes actually,â she huffs, standing from the bench she has been occupying for the last thirty minutes.
âYou havenât seen Chan have you?â
Jisungâs eyes widen slightly as he nods, âAbout ten-ish minutes ago?â
Y/n, slings her bag over her shoulder as she stands.
âDid he say where he was headed?â
Jisung gestures over his shoulder, âTo the studio. Said he needed to work on something.â
She nods, thanking him before taking off in that direction.
âAlso call Minho, Han. Iâm tired of hearing him whine because you wonât return his messages.â
Y/n caught a glimpse of Jisungâs smirk at that, âItâs fun to torment him.â
She couldnât disagree with that.

pairings: test subject!hyunjin x fem!reader
word count: ~ 1k
themes: sfw they just kiss, very loosely based off of the escape mv (very loosely), buzzcut hyunjin, slight mention of blood, lightly wounded hyunjin, chan is a deep sleeper heâs basically not there lol, kissing and lots of it, hyunjin and reader are down bad for one another
Hyunjin stares into the crackling fire across the roomâmind blank as he gets lost in the heavy dancing flames. Heâs just far enough out of the fireâs reach that it doesnât do much for him. He doesnât feel the sweet lick of warmth in the way Chan does, who was curled up next to it. Sleep had lulled him into a slumber hours ago.
Hyunjin doesnât move.
He waits, because he was told to.
The chilled night air that sweeps through the room sends a shiver down his spine. His dark eyes turn from the dancing flames to the busted window. Bits of white travel through the air until they disappear.
Hyunjin was never one to mind the cold but for some reason the sight of the flakes made his heart feel heavy.
Another winter, come and gone, and he and Chan were right where they had been.
But it was freeing was it not?
The abandoned plant had been their sanctuary. They had been freeâreleased from the confines of the facilities that held them captive for so long.
He should be grateful.
He was.
But something had been missing.
The rustle of a bag startled him from his thoughts, a low growl beginning to rumble in the back of his throat.
âItâs just me,â a soft voice called.
Hyunjin turned his attention to the voice, watching as the newcomer abandoned her shoes by the door.
He watched with sharp eyes as she slipped the fur Hyunjin had loaned her from around her shouldersâdraping it over a metal chair nearby.
She approaches him, her eyes not casting him a glance as she moves to pull the contents from the bag onto the table.
âAren't you cold,â she asks him, voice soft as she casts a glance at his upper bodyâonly clad in a dark tank top.
He tilts his head. Not a no but definitely not a yes either.
She nods, moving to open one of the containers she bought. Hyunjin watches her work, holding back a growl when she applies the mystery substance to his lip.
Sheâs gentle, eyes wide and tentative as she focuses on tending to his wounds.
Hyunjin had not let anyone other than Chan this close to him in years. He was uncertain about her at first, more so than Chan was.
When she had found them, it had only been six months since they had escaped. She had wanted them to come with her but neither of them wanted to leave. They werenât ready to be confined to another placeâeven if she was different than their captors. She understood, but always made sure to let them know that the offer was still open should they choose to move on from the remains of the old factory.
It didnât stop her from visiting or from Chan growing attached to her.
Little by little, she had begun to worm her way into Hyunjinâs heart as well.
She still stopped by, still brought them food, still tended to wounds as she was with Hyunjin.
But something felt different between them.
Hyunjin felt sedated when she was near, like she was the gravity that kept him from floating from the ground. Her presence was soft and inviting.
It was stable.
Hyunjin didnât have difficulty loving her. But saying it was entirely different.
Who would love someone like him? An experiment on the run; a man that was not quite human but not quite beast either.
He was pulled from his thoughts as she finished with a soft âdone.â
She was quick to dispose of the bloodied cloth and the bandage wrappings that she had used on some of his other wounds.
Y/n returned to Hyunjinâs side, a pull of worry between her brows as she examined him.
âTalk to me Hyunjin.â
Hyunjin wished to hear his name fall from her lips forever.
But he doesnât say anything, only reaches up to grab her waist.
He hears her inhale sharply at the action, but she relaxes into his hold.
The look on her face tells him everything he needs to know.
Sheâs content, safe and trusting with him.
Hyunjin doesnât say anything as he guides her to sit across his legs.
Her arms rest around his neck as if this isnât the first time the two of them had been this close.
She guides his head to her chestâhugging him. Hyunjin instantly relaxes in her hold. His arms are strong around her, holding her firmly but softly against him. Afraid that if he loosens his grip even a little that she will float away.
Her heartbeat steadies him and for a long moment he just listens.
He lets himself be comforted by her warmth. Her fingers gently brushing against the buzzed hair atop his head comfortingly.
Hyunjin basks in the peace he feels at that moment.
He pulls away slightly to look up at her. Her hand comes to rest on the side of his faceâeyes memorizing his features down to the tiniest detail.
Hyunjin acts on impulse and yearning, tilting his head to barely brush his lips against hersâtesting the waters between them. The ghost of her breath mingled with his has his fingers curling into the fabric of her sweater.
His nose brushes hers, eyes locked on her ownâhooded with a deep yearning. Like it will kill him if he presses them to hers or if he doesnât.
Either way, she would be the death of him.
A soft sound leaves him, something between a whine and a purr as he ghosts his lips across hers once more.
âItâll reopen,â she whispers.
Hyunjin could care less about his busted lip.
A soft gasp leaves her as he holds her tighter against his chest.
âI donât care.â
With those three, drawn out and breathless words, Hyunjin slots his lips against her own. His world bursts into color as he cups her cheek and deepens the kiss. He pauses for a moment, a noise leaving him when she chases after his lips. And then, Hyunjin lets himself be consumed by herâkissing her until neither of them can breathe. Until they are left with nothing but the taste of their love for one another on their tongues.
Hyunjin kisses her like a sheâs his lifeline.
Because thatâs exactly what she had become to him.
His world was turned upside down when she had stumbled upon them.
And now that he had her, he would never let her go.
note: this is kinda sucky but escape hyunjin has been on my mind recently~~ rip chan taking a well deserved sleep through all the kissing lol
