Songs that changed the world
I recently made a post about protest songs and a lot of people commented with more songs, so since then I wanted to make a post about songs that actually helped change the world, at least a little :)
Bella Ciao - a song made in Italy be resistants against fascim during world war two
Hasta Siempre (Comandante che guevara) - Carlos Puebla - about the cuban revolution, the song was inspired by Che Guevara farewell’s letter
Guantanamera - a patriotic cuban song, it has been interpreted by artists all around the world
Imagine - John Lennon - I guess that I don’t really have to present this song, so I’m just going to share this video about a man playing Imagine in front of the Bataclan in Paris after the terrorist attack, I think it just shows how important and beautiful this song is, all well as this video made by the most popular French youtubers after the attack
Blowin’ in the wind - Bob Dylan - a prostest song, that asks rethorical questions about life and peace
Sunday bloody sunday - U2 - describes the horror of the incidents during the war in Ireland
Nuit et brouillard - Jean Ferrat - a very sad and dramatic song about the concentration camps during world war two. In France, we often learn this song at school because it’s a very important one and tells very well the story of Jews who had to board the trains going to the concentration camps (it’s also the name of a movie about concentration camps)
Le champ des partisans - a beautiful song made by French resistants during WWII. It’s a very popular song in France: we often learn it at school and a lot of people think it should be our national anthem instead of La Marseillaise
L’internationale - tells the oppressed to stand up against tyranny, it was translated in many languages and it’s a reknowed communist song
God save the queen - Sex Pistols - against the bad traitment of the working class in Enland during the 70s
A change is gonna come - Sam Cooke - supports the civil rights movements in the USA
We shall overcome - Joan Baez - about the civil rights movement too, helped bring people together
Do they know it’s christmas (feed the world) - BandAid - helped raise money to help Ethiopia during a period of famine
Free listen mandela - asks for Nelson Mandela freedom
We are the world - USA for Africa - another song to aid East Africa when Ethiopia and other countries were struggling with hunger
They don’t care about about us - Michael Jackson - I guess that the title speaks for itself. Various music videos for this song were released, for example in a Brazilian favela and in a USAmerican prison
Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika - a pan-African liberation anthem that became the national anthem of five African countries
Ue O Muite Aruko - a beautiful japanese song that helped people change the way they saw Japan after WWII and learn that Japan is not an enemy
