Her reign quickly descended into years of bitter conflict. A disastrous marriage to Alfonso I of Aragon turned into open warfare as her husband attempted to seize control of her kingdoms. At the same time, ambitious relatives, including her half-sister Theresa of Portugal, sought to expand their own power, while rebellious nobles repeatedly challenged her authority.
