labels for your gender/orientation exist to be useful to you

your label describes your experience; it does not define it

it’s okay not to label yourself or to label yourself only vaguely

it’s okay to find/make up the most precise possible label for yourself

it’s totally okay to guess just because you want a label now, even if that label needs adjusting later

no one but you can determine your gender/orientation

so if they try, give them the finger

it’s okay to try on different labels as you find ones that fit better

people who care will respect any label changes you find necessary

the only time you shouldn’t use a label that you think fits you is if it’s rooted in experience you can’t have, like culture-specific labels or neurotype-specific labels that don’t apply to you

Questions of identity and orientation can be really tough, and it’s fine to take whatever time you need to sort them out. Having a name for your identity can feel great, but if nothing feels quite right, or even the most appropriate label feels too limiting, there’s no rule that says you have to have a self-appointed label at all.
