transitioning without hrt and surgery is absolutely still transitioning! that said, the post applies to all kinds of transitioning - some people may not transition socially either and that’s totally okay too!

I'm genderqueer, and I don't identify as nonbinary! Genderqueer has been used for all sorts of gender expansive & non-normative experiences, not just nonbinary or even just trans! And while some of it's popularization thoughout the 2000s focused on nonbinary experiences under it's umbrella I think trying to narrow it down to just that erases some of its beauty and utility as a word that covers many queer experiences. I use genderqueer because it doesn't ask me to choose between binary or nonbinary, and it doesn't require me to neatly split my experience between my sexuality, gender, or expression. To anon I'd say if genderqueer feels right or useful in describing your experience with gender then it's open to you.

I think my reasons are maybe slightly different but still similar - I don’t identify as non-binary (and I especially loathe being referred to as an ‘enby’). Just because someone technically belongs to a category or fits a label doesn’t mean they have to identify with it or label themselves that way. I knew the term genderqueer way before the term non-binary so it’s part an age thing, but also in part it’s because I hate how bigots have been trying to erase us; how they’re trying to rewrite history and to rob us of the word queer and that includes genderqueer; how they’ve tried to tell us we cannot use the words and spread lies about how genderqueer is some term ‘made up within the past couple of years by special snowflake cishets on tumblr who want to be oppressed’ and (where they’re not just straight up trying to deny non-binary genders even exist) trying to force the label non-binary onto all of us, anyone whose gender is queer or genderqueer, in place of either/both those words. Far from putting me off using genderqueer and queer, they’ve just made me dislike the term non-binary (as a self-identifier) even more and more determined to never use it as a self-identifier.
