kageyama who believed in hinata’s ability to develop himself so that they could one day compete on a bigger stage, who pushed him to be his very best and in the process pushing himself to be his own best version, who learnt to rely on and work with his team. hinata who challenged himself to begin from the basics in a completely new country, who had to re-learn self-care as part of volleyball, who stayed positive despite the hardships he faced while watching his friends achieve the same goals that he had.

thinking. about how kageyama’s “what have you been doing for the past three years” towards middle school hinata was not him berating hinata for his lack of skill but rather an acknowledgement of his potential if he had the opportunity and environment to fully develop his ability. when he refuses to set to hinata at the beginning it’s not because he hates him but because kageyama knows it’s a waste of his potential to solely rely on his jumping and spiking abilities without having him develop the basics of volleyball. sure his jump will get him to a certain extent, but as we all have seen without having a good foundation he will eventually begin to have his moves read and his plays will begin to lose their effect which is why it’s so important for hinata to start from the bottom before he can truly utilise his strengths

“what’s lame isn’t losing the match, but being scared of the match” “does my average self really have time to look down?” i don’t think we give enough credit to tanaka for being one of the most mentally strong, motivating and reliable characters in haikyuu like he makes such a good point about not even trying because you’re scared being ‘lamer’ than losing. being average at something doesn’t mean you should just not try, there’s nothing wrong with being average if you’re giving it your all

i feel like people often berate haikyuu fans for ‘infiltrating’ volleyball spaces and fail to acknowledge how accessible haikyuu has made volleyball. i think many sports are often quite hard for the average person to get into due to the nature of it but for furudate to make volleyball so fun that people seek its enjoyment outside of haikyuu is soo exciting and lovely in my opinion

this goes back to nekomata and kuroo’s motif of ‘lowering the net’ and i think this is exactly that - making it easy to digest in alternate forms of media so that people who probably would not have been into it can enjoy it too. i know there are countless players who get into the sport because of haikyuu and i think that’s so so great !!! and people who now watch irl volleyball and support irl teams like there is absolutely nothing wrong with that we love that !!

hinata (haikyuu) - my entire blog is about why i love him he’s the most passionate little guy ever i want to be Him

tsukishima (haikyuu) - FAKEST IDGAFER EVER he’s so real tho like he’s just like me which is why i will always have a soft spot for him even tho he’s a little insufferable

chuuya (bsd) - MY BELOVED CHUUYA (stormbringer spoilers) he’s literally been thru so much and lost everyone around him but still has so much trust and love for others i’m so :c the battles he faces with his humanity literally moves me sm i love him

yato (noragami) - i can’t explain it i’ve had a crush on this guy since i was 12

yona (akayona) - my beloved yona who’s also been thru so much and is still full of so much love and compassion she deserves literally everything good ever

shin-ah (akayona) - ok all the akayona characters are my favs but shin-ah especially his backstory got my heart clenching and he’s sooo 🥺 i will protect you my shin-ah

Favorite Character: oh my god i have WAY too many snd it changes every day but i would say tsukki hinata and kuroo currently i could write an essay about each one ngl

Favorite Arc/Episode/Scene: tsukishima’s block in the shiratorizawa match oh my goddd and of course the beloved tokyo training arc

Character I Think is Underrated: idk if he counts as underrated but lowkey kita.. he’s so insightful and i think he points out one of the most important points of the whole series which many fans tend to miss - that the debate between talent vs hard work is shallow and misleading (i could also write a whole essay about this)

Character I Think is Overrated: NONE i literally love every character in the show

Favorite Ship/Pairing: i’ve never talked about them here but i have a severe case of iwaoi brain worms and kagehina ofc

Something I Love About the Show/Movie: every character is SOO well written and carries a different message. it’s not just a story about working hard and winning but self-care and handling losses when they come

i just think about how karasuno was the perfect team for kageyama like make the most of everyone’s strengths and even if he is a little difficult they communicate so well with him. so when they call him the ‘king of the court’ he’s no longer someone who makes decisions for the team on his own and expects everyone to keep up with him, but he’s a king who sets the pace for the team so they can push themselves to their limits

and suga is seriously the best senior for kageyama - i’ve seen someone say that he is everything kageyama wanted oikawa to be - which i think is a little true bc i believe that oikawa and kageyama brought out each other’s insecurities while suga healthily competes but also works together with kageyama.

not to mention the healthy (?) bickering from hinata, tsukishima, tanaka etc.. i feel like it’s so essential for his character bc they’re not people who will just stand for what they don’t believe in. and especially for teenage boys i think a little bit of fighting is necessary bc it’s how they grow and learn.

i think the squabbling is so important because you never see kageyama have back and forth with his teammates from middle school. they always have him shut out, but with Karasuno they're not afraid to bicker in front of him and include him. Even if he's not partaking he's connecting with the team instead of them bottling up their problems (like the middle school teammates)

EXACTLY they make it clear that they’re not just letting him ‘boss them around’ and they’ll only comply with what they agree with which makes him less hesitant to express what he thinks is right even if it is harsh. i think the main problem he had with his middle school team is that they’d just internalise everything leading to built up tension and strain where they didn’t match up

“he who climbs the ladder must begin at the bottom” is so so so important in haikyuu bc during ball boy arc everyone tells hinata to “learn something special” to compensate for his actions but what he learns instead is a good, solid receive - aka the basics of volleyball.

he proves that to grow you don’t need a new flashy serve or powerful spike but it is the basic receive that is the foundation of good volleyball. so yes, to become good at something you must start at the bottom even if it means embarrassing yourself in the process. only then can you truly become good.

i will always love how losses are written in haikyuu. just because you lose it doesn’t mean you suck and naturally just because you win it doesn’t mean you’re the best (i.e “if you get really good, i promise you someone even better will come find you”). even with hard work and dedication losses are normal and common, and a loss doesn’t diminish your hard work it is simply part of the process.

one thing that’s always stuck out to me is when people say the ball boy arc is super embarrassing and i think the point is that it IS embarrassing but hinata is willing to take these small opportunities, even if they are embarrassing, to help him grow.

he can challenge himself in unconventional ways because he loves volleyball THAT much. he’s so positive and sees everything as a learning opportunity - he’s bad at something? that’s just endless chances for him to improve. because of that he never looks down on anyone and sees potential in everyone
