I really love how accepting of this adaptation you are. You know, my father was a Tolkien aficionado. He read all of Tolkien’s books and practically knew them by heart. The LOTR trilogy is considered a masterpiece now, but when the films were first coming out, he had a lot of complaints as a fan: “Why did they add that? It’s not in the books.” “Why are these characters missing?” “Why didn’t this super important event happen?” and so on. An adaptation is always a matter of interpretation… it can never be a perfect copy of the text brought to the screen. So I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate your perspective on this matter. Your knowledge of the books is also so important, because I’d bet that less than 5% of the fandom has actually read them. I said it a while ago, but just for the record: I... decided to make my peace with it. And enjoy it.
This is what we're getting for the foreseeable future, AMC holds the right in perpetuity. This is what I waited for 3 decades already(!), and just picking it apart... what good can come from that?
It is a brilliant adaptation. More layers than an onion, playwrights able to set up and play the long game, giving us a seasons-spanning puzzle, while also hitting the vibe and language and feeling that these books provide. A show that is not color-blind but color-conscious, a show that dares to put its fingers into wounds, and makes us look. With a cast that is likely unmatched.
Would I have done some things differently? Certainly.
Would it have been better? I seriously doubt it. 😅
Of course I would have loved the wolves in the snow. Absolutely. But I also get why they did it the way they did. I also know why they changed the music, and the lyrics, and that whole setup. And so on.
The show did a whole lot of little changes that anchors it firmly in our time and reality, the reactions and events adapted are also a lot more "real", despite the fantastical gothic horror setting.
And despite all the changes, despite all the shifts the ARCS are there, the characterizations are there, if one knows ALL the books, and for me, for example, it is SUCH a joy and a gift to know that the show considers the changes its made for these characters. Has these changes influence the reactions and actions, and events, and STILL manages to hit all the major story points.
