It wasn't exactly a question about her submarine that came to mind as he perused the engine room, but something else that he supposed had something to do with it. Usopp still felt a little apprehensive about asking it in the first place. If she had no idea what he was talking about, then he would look like a complete fool, more than he usually did, and that wasn't what he wanted. Not from Law's chief engineer that he would potentially be working with in the future; that he wanted to work with in the future. Chewing gently on his lower lip, Usopp shifted his gaze from the pressure gauge to give Ikkaku his attention once more, one hand tapping against the metal clasp of his bag. How did one go about this without sounding like a complete lunatic? ❝ Ah... Uhm, well, while you're working in here, ❞ he gave a gesture with his free arm, indicating the room they were in, ❝ do you ever... hear things? Clanking around that doesn't exactly sound like the typical noises of the engine running, like someone else is... working in here with you even though you're all alone? ❞

So she finally decided to leave her little island and go on adventures herself? Usopp couldn't deny that her decision being based on his own enthusiasm and stories made him feel a small bit of pride. At the same time, Maddy looked so innocent to him and with that rush of pride came more worry, especially now that she declared she was very much alone. He considered Maddy a friend, and if Usopp knew anything, travelling the seas alone wouldn't be easy. Heck, even with his entire crew it still proved difficult sometimes. Usopp made sure to keep that worry off his features as Maddy took his hands between her's. It wouldn't do anyone any good to start questioning her now on how she would proceed, and she did just say she planned to find her own crew eventually, or at least join one already formed. He just hoped it wouldn't be with people who took advantage of her innocence, or that Devil Fruit she had in her possession. That could get dangerous pretty quickly. ❝ Gonna be a pirate, huh? ❞ Usopp chuckled with a grin, deep brown eyes peering down into curious ocean blues. ❝ Think you got what it takes to be a brave warrior of the sea like me? ❞ Another thing tugged at the back of his mind. Usopp knew Maddy hadn't been the only one taking care of the greenhouse where they first met, but she'd clearly been the main caretaker. Who took her place so she could go off on her own adventures? Was she planning to use this time to curate more plants to add to her collection? With each passing second more questions blossomed in his mind, and he blinked a couple times. ❝ Wait a second... who's taking care of the greenhouse now? Wasn't that your passion? ❞

Maddy's reaction to his exclamation of how many Devil Fruit users were on his own crew was... interesting, to say the least. He expected the excitement that she seemed to always have at the ready, but at the same time there seemed to be some perplexity. Like she couldn't believe what she heard. Of course, it made sense since from the sounds of things she didn't think there were actually that many users in the world. Usopp had to wonder how sheltered Maddy had to be to not see just how big the world actually was. If not sheltered, maybe she'd been told lies her entire life. He couldn't really say which would be the more probable answer, and it's not like he was about to ask either. Didn't exactly matter now that he'd given her confirmation about how common users actually were. Then came the confession of Maddy being a user herself, and Usopp couldn't help but gawk. Probably not the smartest thing, since the moment his jaw practically hit the floor she started sputtering about not being a danger. Usopp didn't really think that, it was just a shock. Blinking a couple times, he slowly shut his mouth and hummed, then looked about the flora surrounding them. If he had to take a guess, he imagined all these different plants being able to survive amongst one another had something to do with her powers. So, he had to ask. ❝ I didn't think you were going to hurt me, Maddy... what is your power, exactly? Something to do with plants? ❞ He questioned, returning his attention to the woman across the table from him. Usopp couldn't deny that now he was the curious one.

Alright, so this imposter had a point. There was only one thing Usopp could think of that would settle this once and for all. Eyes narrowed in suspicion, and with a huff he shoved his hand into his bag, fiddling around in its contents for a brief moment before pulling out a small, spherical piece of ammunition. He didn't use them much anymore, but they were still his. Only those on his crew would know what they were compiled of. This fake surely wouldn't. With a grin, he held it out to eye level. ❝ Alright, alright, alright. There's only one way to solve this issue, it seems. What's the special ingredient in my stars? Lie, and I'll know. We'll say it at the same time... 3... 2... 1!— ❞

Ah hell, how could he actually be mad at an adorable face like that, even if she did look a little smug. He'd show her up somehow, just had to take a little bit to figure out exactly how. It wasn't like Usopp could magically sprout plants at well. One thing he could do was show her how the pop greens actually worked as weapons though... Usopp glanced over to the railing of the Sunny, wondering exactly how long he had before members of his crew starting returning from their adventures. Zoro of course was still here, somewhere, but he wouldn't be much of a problem, especially if this child was able to get past him. He could easily hop off the ship for a bit, surely. As he was about to ask her if she wanted to see these pop greens in action, she suddenly blurted out her own question. It had him blanking for a second before a wide grin split his face. Brining a hand up, he poked at his chest with a finger. ❝ Name's Usopp! Captain Usopp, to be precise. Got a massive crew of only the best of the best under my order. ❞ He had to stop himself from going into more of a spiel, feeling like he had to redeem himself because of earlier. ❝ Now, who are you? Only fair I know your name, too. ❞

Usopp could see the way they were fighting the interest. Some might see him as shy, but even so, he was extremely observant. That ever-present grin widened, and without seeming to even think much of it, Usopp held out his weapon to the stranger for them to take a closer look. They didn't seem the type who would just run off with another's possessions, so it was fine. ❝ This is an upgraded version my previous slingshot... but yes, I made it all myself. Used what I could find on the Boin Archipelago, and man... there was some good building material there, ❞ Usopp mused, a faraway look coming to his face as he thought back to his time on that 'living' island. ❝ The wood I used for the shaft is extremely flexible, same as the rubber bands. I don't have to worry about them accidentally snapping on me anymore- ❞ Pausing in his overly excited rant at their interruption, Usopp hummed, trying to figure out a way to explain his projectiles that wouldn't completely confuse the average person. It wasn't everyday that you heard someone using seeds as ammunition, after all. ❝ Ah, actually I mainly use something called Pop Greens. They're kinda like seeds that upon impact grow into various, sometimes strange, plant life. Also found on the Boin Islands... ❞

Not seeing any problem with allowing his new companion to get a closer look at his weapons of choice, Usopp gave a shrug and held out the sphere to drop into Ayla's waiting palm. It wasn't like she could do much with it without having a decent amount of force behind the projectile. Even if she smashed it against the ground, the distance between her arm and the cobblestone wouldn't cause a dangerous enough reaction. Her following question had him smirking, which he hid behind smugly rubbing a thumb along his nose. ❝ I can tell you the main ingredient I use. Otherwise, they wouldn't be much of a secret anymore, now would they? ❞ Maybe he was just stringing her along. He didn't mind telling her the full list of tried and true mixtures he had, but that didn't really matter, and it was quite a long list anyway. After waiting a breath, Usopp continued. ❝ Tabasco sauce, normally. I have a few with something a little spicier for when I really find myself in a pickle. Really seems to do the trick, too. Just aim for the eyes and the splatter from the impact does the rest. ❞ Usopp was quite proud of his inventions. These little bad boys were no different. Without realizing, he became more animated as he started walking forward, a slight bounce in his step, more than willing to answer the rest of Ayla's questions that seemed to spill from her mouth like a waterfall. Her apology forced a chuckle from his chest, and he waved his hand in the air as if to dismiss it. ❝ You're fine, you're fine. I don't blame you for getting excited while in the presence of a genius. Gun powder is another ingredient I use sometimes, yeah. As for speed... they probably slow them down if I'm being honest, but my aiming skills make up for that, and I can shoot however far I want. ❞ Alright, so maybe that was a small bluff. He had his limits, after all. Ayla didn't need to know that, though.

❝ Huh? ❞ Usopp had just enough time to stop in his tracks and twist around at the sound of his name being called out from a decidedly familiar female voice in the crowd before thin, pale arms were curling around his waist. He gave a squeak in surprise, arms instinctively lifting up so they wouldn't get trapped in the hug as he eyed the red-haired woman who all but tackled him. Good thing he had impeccable balance! Otherwise, the force she used to hug him with probably would've had them both tumbling to the ground. ❝ Maddy? Oh, hey! Fancy seeing you again so soon! ❞ Usopp grinned at her excitement, bringing an arm down over Maddy's shoulders to return the hug with equal enthusiasm before she pulled away. Her excitement was contagious. ❝ What're you doing in a place like this? Are you alone? ❞ The island his crew docked at wasn't dangerous, per say, but he still didn't like the idea of Maddy being by herself. Who knew what kind of people lurked in the dark.

Hearing the pride in Ikkaku's voice at her declaration of being the best Usopp let out a knowing hum, hands lacing behind his back as he sauntered a couple steps away from her workstation and deeper into the engine room. He listened to the rather calming hum of the machinery around them, something he was slightly used to hearing back on the Sunny, to an extent. It wasn't quite the same, seeing as the mechanics of Franky's pride and joy ran on cola rather than your typical engine fuel, but it was close enough to be comforting. Usopp refused to think too deeply on how deadly the accidents on a submarine could really be. He definitely didn't need the imagery of a crumpled tin can at the moment, even if they weren't currently submerged and there wasn't any actual danger being here. ❝ I can only imagine... ❞ He mumbled offhandedly as he paused in front of one of the multitude of pressure gauges. The dial barely moved, staying steady in one place with only the slightest of vibrations from the needle. A well taken care of ship. It had him thinking back to the Merry, and that one time on Skypiea where he swore there was a ghost working on the ship through the night. Then the words Franky told him when he first joined the crew. Reaching out a hand, Usopp gently ran his finger over the glass surface of the gauge, listening to Ikkaku's words but not really listening. ❝ Yeah... Hey, Ikkaku? ❞

Usopp watched in relative silence as Enel brought forth his powers and created that small ball of condensed electricity. His eyes never strayed from the movement, analytical brain coming up with ideas on the spot on how he could replicate something that looked simple enough. He wasn't stupid though. It was definitely going to be harder than he initially anticipated to accomplish what he wanted. With Enel's words, Usopp mentally ran through the list of conductive metals he knew about off hand. To construct his masterpiece it would need to be strong enough to withhold that amount of power, and keep it contained until it was ready to be unleashed. That was going to be the difficult part... Attention shifted to the inviting gesture once the electric ball dispersed and Usopp couldn't help but frown, wondering if this was a trap to get him closer, or if Enel was genuinely being hospitable. Taking a chance, not wanting to be on the receiving end of this man's impatience, he took a few tentative steps forward, though didn't take a seat like he was instructed to do. ❝ A cannon ball, of sorts, ❞ Usopp said in way of explanation to what he had in mind, arms lifting to cross over his chest with hands tucked away so Enel couldn't see the way he was fidgeting. ❝ Smaller, but with the added electricity, on impact it would be far more destructive... It's just... containing that amount of power without it being dangerous to those handling it. ❞
