Sinners is a 2025 American horror film produced, written, and directed by Ryan Coogler.
Set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as criminal twin brothers who return to their hometown in the Jim Crow South, where they are confronted by a supernatural evil. It co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton (in his film debut), Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.
I refused to watch this one, until now, because there is too much noise about it, and it usually means that I won't like the content. The more trendy it is, the less I usually appreciate it (trendy books, movies, ... always the same for me 😅). And I wanted to hate it for that reason.
Well, I didn't hate it, but I still don't get the massive hype over this movie. The aesthetics of the film are good but nothing really new or giving wow effect, the soundtrack and all the singing and music parts, are for me, what's making this movie interesting. The acting is good but uneven, same for the pace.
It let me behind, in the middle of the movie or so, 40/50 min of the movie where I was totally disconnected with the movie and never totally rooted for it again until the end.
It's going all weird vampire shit (not the good vampire stuff) a bit too "From dusk till down" with less plot, in a middle of a good bit of mississipi darkish folk gospel tale (never really exploited though, I waited for it after the few hints I saw at first, but they were just that, disconnected winks to this folk tale or that bit of black history, but it's going nowhere). It could have leaned less on the basic white american vampire trend (with of course, kkk allusion, because you cannot do an almost full black cast/story/direction without opposing some white narratives here and there to please the masses (and go where the money is), and the usual typical and too easy black vs white and good vs bad short cuts), barelly developed from the usual mainstream tropes, and more on the actual mississipi folklore and black narratives (I mean, they got some weird dark really scary stuff in their lore and folklore I reqd about and so much material to do some really good stuff, extending vision and creating new tropes and trend could be more fun and inclusive, but no 😑) instead of going full typical basic american bang bang, gory and fangs.
I still kind of like it (most of it) somehow, but I was disappointed by some big parts of it and the lore and plot by themselves. So it's a bit of a "aye but nay" movie recommendation from me (not unusual with me 😅 🤔) not negative, not positive, let's say a meh in the middle, good for a lazy sunday watch party but not something I'll be watching more than once.
The music, though, is medecine for your soul! It gave me goosebumps during the whole movie with the clapping foot and all 🤣. I ended up listening to it more than I was actually watching at some point.
