âWe need to accept that we wonât always make the right decisions, that weâll screw up royally sometimes â understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, itâs part of success.â

TOM HANKSÂ
We all know him as the voice behind Woody the toy cowboy from Disneyâs Toy Story, and we also loved him as the sweet and caring Forest in the cult classic Forrest Gump. So who or what does Mr. Hanks owe his success toâ Chabot College. In an article he wrote for the New York Times, the iconic actor revealed that due to lack of financial funds led him to attend the community college. He writes, â I sent my final set of stats to Chabot, a community college in nearby Hayward, Calif., which, because it accepted everyone and was free, would be my alma materâ He also voiced his opinion on how President Obama wants to invest in free education for community college students. He says, â Iâm guessing the new Congress will squawk at the $60 billion price tag, but I hope the idea sticks, because more veterans, from Iraq and Afghanistan this time, as well as another generation of mothers, single parents and workers who have been out of the job market, need lower obstacles between now and the next chapter of their lives. High school graduates without the finances for a higher education can postpone taking on big loans and maybe luck into the class that will redefine their lifeâs work. Many lives will be changedâ In his closing paragraph, he tells his kids, âThat place made me what I am today.â

Amy Tan
Author of The Joy Luck Club, which has been translated into 25 languages and received the Los Angeles Times Book Award, says that attending a community college was âa wonderful decision.. Perhaps it was the only decision I could have made. I didnât have a lot of money and I was putting myself through collegeâ Tan attended San Jose City College and eventually was able to later attend UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz. Most individuals seem to think community college is for people who have no desire to attend a 4-year university. For some it could be a terrible truth, but for others lack of funds make it harder to attend. Though, community college is economically the better choice for those who canât afford the costs of a university, it doesnât necessarily mean you should be ashamed of it. Be ashamed for not succeeding, wherever you get your education, it doesnât matter as long as you get it. Â
Community college students also encompass a more diverse group than four-year institutions: 36 percent of community college students are the first in their families to go to college, and nearly 30 percent are parents themselves; black, Latino and minority students make up half the student population, and nearly all students work at an outside job while attending school.
Why Community College Is Often A Long and Winding Road
