Salt Sugar Fat (and a sickening fact I learned from the book)

I just finished reading Salt Sugar Fat, a fascinating piece of investigative journalism about the history of processed foods and the science behind products that are engineered to be irresistible.

While there were MANY eye-opening stories in the book, including:

The Beef Marketing Program’s “Cancer Team” created to find arbitrary flaws in cancer research to weaken the argument linking beef to colon cancer.  

The taste of canned soups if even just a third of the sodium is removed, described as: “somewhere between bitter and metallic”

..the most egregious act of corporate power was from Nestle, the largest food corporation in the world.  Nestle has the most billion-dollar brands of fatty, salty, sugary processed foods.  

Nestle is now honing in on the weight loss surgery industry, creating a line of liquid foods for people who have had lap-band or gastric bypass surgeries.

To be clear: the same company that is providing consumers with unhealthy foods that cause diet-related illnesses is now also producing foods used to in a health care setting when consumers can no longer eat those products. Cornering the market.
