There's a quiet strength in Leo, if he's not careful he could crush solid metal as if it were merely clay

I like to think the real reason that he and Sally faced like zero legal consequences for anything in TLT (Gabe, the Arch)—or, frankly, from any of Percy’s school mishaps and destruction of property—is that Poseidon managed to register Sally and Percy under some sort of confusing diplomatic immunity.

I mean, Poseidon is the literal king of all the oceans. I feel like his family should get a little diplomatic immunity. He’s been on-board with making both of them immortal. Legal protection just seems to fit that vibe.

I can imagine Percy’s file showing up during The Arch incident and some agent being like

Agent J: Wait a minute. Prosecuting this kid might get messy.

Agent S: What? He just committed an act of terrorism, Bill.

Agent J: Yeah, but here he’s listed as qualifying for— what is this? diplomatic immunity? This is crazy. Do you know who his dad is?

Agent S: No. Why?

Agent J: Neither do I. I can’t find it in the paperwork.

Honestly the real reason they’re never prosecuted has less to do with the status and more to do with the fact that the paperwork is So Confusing. Basically everything is redacted by the Mist and no one can figure out where any of the paperwork came from. —Teams of people getting headaches from reading over the paper trail for too long and experiencing bouts of temporary amnesia where they can’t remember what they were looking at and why —Agents determined to stay late at work only to get home and realize that they’ve left the office and can’t remember looking over the files

There’s a whole office of agents and a legal team that have dedicated themselves to working their way around the problem so that something like this Never Happens Again with their paperwork. They’ll draw straws to see who gets to pour over the paperwork today. They try taking notes but they all turn out as gibberish and foreign letters. They have a tally keeping track of how many times Steve drives home during lunch or Nancy ends up with a migraine or Emmy finds herself napping on the office couch, or how many legal documents Greg has accidentally shredded right after he filled them out.

Their office has garnered so much attention that it’s become a government-funded psych experiment. The national defense office wants to get its hands on whatever crazy voodoo they’re using to cover up the Jackson history.

There’s also a betting pool going on about what makes this kid so important and who wants to keep him off the radar.

Let’s not even start on the foreign agencies that get involved after the Giant War.

They all learned pretty quickly that technology wasn’t going to help them. Any footage they get of Percy Jackson winds up scrambled and confusing. So the best solution is resorting back to grass-root methods:

Field agents.

Sadie: Guys, I think we’re being followed.

Percy: *grabbing for his pocket* What?

Annabeth: Oh, I see what you’re looking it. No it’s alright. Weapon down, Percy. It’s the NSA.

Percy: Todd? *his eyes scan the crowd*

Annabeth: Yeah

Percy: *waves at a man in a baseball cap who freezes and ducks behind a kiosk in the mall*

Percy: It’s ok. It’s just Todd.

Sadie: Ok. Hold up. You have an NSA agent?

Sadie: Don’t they usually use phones or something?

Annabeth: Percy doesn’t have a phone

Percy: Too much bad demigod juju

Percy: I thought Todd was FBI

Annabeth: No, Seaweed Brain. FBI checks in on alternating Thursdays

Percy: Right

Annabeth: *to Sadie* FBI are the worst, honestly. I feel like we spend all day saving their asses.

Percy: Remember Vince? And the corn dog incident?

Sadie: I mean that doesn’t sound too bad.

Annabeth: There were empousai. Venom, right in the corn dogs. I’ve never seen a mortal drop that fast.

Percy: Or Elise and the subway scramble

Annabeth: That mishap with Randy on the 58th floor

Percy: *Looking back at Todd* You know, I miss Jamie.

Annabeth: Yeah, Jamie was nice.

Sadie: What happened to Jamie?

Annabeth: Oh, no. Nothing like that. They took her off the case.

Percy: She was too friendly.

Annabeth: She always waved back.

Sadie: . . . Right. And why are they following you again?

Percy: Annabeth has a theory.

Annabeth: We think it has something to do with Percy’s stint as a domestic terrorist.

Sadie: A wat now?

Percy is an insanely good strategist. we don't often pick up on it, because he's placed himself right next to the smartest strategist at Camp, but he's a veritable chess master. book one, at twelve years old, we see him manipulate Procrustes to fall for his own trap in minutes. book two, he manipulates Luke into confessing his entire evil plan in front of the whole Camp, instantly clearing Chiron's name and revealing that hey there's a storm coming. we see that trend continuing all the way up until House of Hades, where Annabeth herself has to take a step back and reevaluate how she sees him.

oh what's that? the people in the back couldn't hear me? do i need to keep talking about how SMART PERCY JACKSON IS?

let's start with book one. i already mentioned Procrustes. now let's talk about Ares. let's talk about how, okay, yes, it was impulsive to talk back to Ares, to insult him and get angry at him. but once Percy challenges Ares to a duel? he's all strategy. because let's be real friends, Percy Jackson had about 12 minutes of training to his name and solved a good bit of problems his first the quest by running away. he did not win because he was a good swordsman. first, he sized Ares up, he tried to break his defense until he realized Ares was better than him. and then? distractions. he used the cops' arrival to his advantage, he taunted Ares, made him mad, made him think about what the war he wanted would entail, all to distract him, so that Percy could get to the ocean. he tricked the god into letting him use his home turf to gain strength, and dealt the final blow, a mere cut to the ankle, that ended the fight because of it.

book three. Percy's fighting Atlas. he's already one of the best swordsmen at camp, but he knows he can't beat this guy. he knows he'd lose that fight, and be either killed or captured, neither of which he can afford. the solution? release the goddess who can beat him. he knows he can handle holding the sky better than he can handle Atlas. and when Artemis is fighting Atlas, even though the sky is crushing him and it feels like his brain is being squeezed out of his head, he correctly determines what her plan is and prepares the sky the best he can to switch holders. talk about working under pressure. it's insane how coherent he was in that amount of pain.

book four. Antaeus. his half brother who claims to be Poseidon's favorite, who brings about destruction in their father's name, who has built an arena of skulls in honor of him. who has thrown Percy off his game because holy shit is this true? is my dad that awful? is this what Poseidon's favor looks like? even with his doubts, Percy is able to hold his own, and when a killing strike doesn't take Antaeus down, Percy is able to put two and two together while simultaneously not getting his head cut off. his mother is Gaea, he draws his strength from the earth, it's healing him, so he has to get the fight off the ground. Percy kills a giant who claimed he was unkillable and throws Luke's forces into disarray.

book five is impressive on its own. it's Percy's strategies that keep a force of a couple hundred-odd demigods, Hunters, and Party Ponies successfully able to hold off a thousands-strong monster army. He clears the boats on the rivers. he has his soldiers hold all entrances to the city. he gets Poseidon to make the strategic concession of his palace to defeat Typhon. he realizes that it's Luke's choice that will preserve or raze Olympus.

quick stop at son of Neptune to note that the Romans wouldn't make an idiot Praetor. a lot of his promotion had to do with raw physical power when he killed Polybotes, but he did have to do some quick thinking to get Terminus to help him kill the giant.

House of Hades. oh, how i love House of Hades. Percy is so good at manipulating Bob, he's so good at getting this Titan to do things to prove their friendship, that Annabeth herself has to stop, take a step back, and rethink how she sees him. she has known him for five years by this point. she has seen him save the world multiple times. she knows he is on her side, and yet she has to stop and think about whether or not he's still good, whether or not he's using his brain to do the wrong things. and the focus he had to have to even consider, hey, this is a liquid, maybe i can control this poison, while he is actively dying, is incredible. we've seen his response to life-and-death situations change from sheer panic to rapid-fire ideas on how to save himself. add in being able to face down Tartarus at all and come out sane. that's mind-blowing itself, because even the gods fear the Pit.

Reyna: Why are you here

Percy: To deliver lazy ass old ladies *jazz hands*

Reyna *muttering I hate kids*: Why aren't you in school

Percy: School's a bitch

Throughout the whole first week Reyna is desperately trying to make Percy go to school in New Rome which leads to the following incidents in no particular order

a) he kidnaps Hannibal the elephant

b) somehow managed to sneak out of school multiple times

c) organises a protest with the other teens

d) defeats Ovtavian (who's 32) in a swordfight in less than a minute

Poor Reyna's losing her mind. She already lost her fellow praetor and now she had to deal with a teenager who was acting out

this is when Mars shows up ofc and personally requests Percy to be on the quest and everyone's like...he's a kid???

Percy: I thought you'd be glad to be rid of me

Reyna: That doesn't mean I want a child to go on a deadly quest???

who is a 1000% done with the gods because he was the ONLY adult in camp half-blood AND had to go on a quest with Leo and Piper who were NEWLY claimed and had to be both the dad friend and the mom friend to everyone until the ship was built. He was supremely unimpressed by the legendary Chiron.

16-year-old Annabeth practically ran camp and heralded olympus's construction and went on solo quests to search for Percy, and for the love of children, please get some sleep kid!

annabeth has understood love to be conditional. things with her father are good when she doesn't attract that many monsters. her mother only acknowledges her when she accomplishes something good. her other examples of love come from grover, thalia, and luke, who all prioritize someone or something above her, and she understands that as she's not good enough for them.

meanwhile, percy's understanding of love comes from his relationship with sally, who made it known that even if she has to work a lot or send him to boarding school or marry a guy he doesn't like, she loves him. grover searching, and tyson going to live with posiden doesn't phase him because he knows they aren't doing those things because he isn't enough.

that contrast is why botl was so hard. because annabeth still thinks that percy would abandon her if he finds someone or something better, and percy doesn't think to reassure her because he thinks that she understands it's a given that if he goes away, he'll always come back for her. he doesn't know what she needs assurance of.
