Under a video of a girl talking about how her face was being put on nudes using ai. I left a comment to express my frustration with ai and empathy towards her situation. I ended the comment with “I hate AI” Now I know this comment was probably made with good intent. But let’s break this down, because this isn’t the only comment I got in reply. Comments like this have been increasing where they acknowledge the surface issue but immediately pivot to a technicality, exception, or unrelated positive. Medical AI helping doctors is great. Using AI to create fake nudes without consent is disgusting and should be illegal. Those aren’t the same thing. There’s a term for this, “deflection by exception.” This happens a lot, especially in online culture. They prize “nuance” above all. Strong opinions get automatically labeled as extreme, so people feel compelled to “both-sides” everything immediately. An oddly specific positive example is an easy way to signal sophistication. This kind of reply isn’t really engaging with the core complaint. It’s a verbal sidestep that lets the responder feel intellectually superior while dodging the actual harm. “Deepfake election interference or propaganda” → “Misinformation existed before AI too.” Each time, the specific, worsened vector enabled by generative AI gets diluted into generic human flaws.
