I fasted for the first time in my life for this year's Karwa Chauth, although I have been dating my boyfriend for almost 5 years now. Last year I was thinking about fasting but Karwa Chauth landed exactly on my birthday and I really want to eat my cake alright? Haha, well that is not the only reason why I didn't fast. Since me and my boyfriend are in a long distance relationship, I happened to travel on that day also to meet him in Georgia, and the last thing I want on a busy day full of traveling, schedules, and changing planes is feeling hungry and thirsty.

This year I decided to fast. I hadn't really prepared in any way for the fasting, for the previous night I was still googling and trying to see everything I have to do. Turns out there are as many ways to celebrate Karwa Chauth as there are people celebrating it so I just had to pick the steps suitable for me. Also my boyfriend had said that I can have water and fruits throughout the day but the internet didn't mention so, so I decided to go with nothing just in case. Before going to sleep I prepared my sargi for the early morning which was vegetable curry. I woke up at around 6.30 am to take a shower, dress up and do a morning prayer. I wasn't quite sure how to do a puja for I have never done one, but I did it outside since I don't have any idols in my home. After completing the prayer I ate the sargi and drank some water, and after the sun rose I continued my day in a very peaceful manner. I was mostly napping and killing time. I'm sure Karwa Chauth is easier to celebrate with people to celebrate it with and the time would go much faster, so my day was quite dull actually.   My boyfriend and I try to have an hour-long video call each day, and he ended up calling me a bit too early. We had initially planned to break my fast  together and I was surprised why he called me an hour before moonrise. Turns out he had forgotten our daylight saving so he was expecting me to be an hour ahead Well, we managed to kill time together. I never had any issue with hunger, but I was thirsty however. And the nearer we got to the moonrise, the more I started having a headache. The last 30 minutes of my and my boyfriend's video call was just me being emotional. My headache was getting so bad that I even teared up, and I teared up even more every time I went outside to check if the moon was visible. The sky was so cloudy that nothing could be seen. I started to lose my hope and we ended up googling what to do and turned out we can break the fast too as long as we know that the moon is out there. We took a break from our call and I had now sent a message also to my mother-in-law in India to ask her what I should do. She sent me a message that I should break the fast but she ended up calling me as well. We talked for about 15 minutes on the phone, I was now crying my eyes out from the pain and my Mummiji was telling me how proud she is of me.

Me and my boyfriend called eachother again to break the fast together. Although I couldn’t see the moon, I went outside and placed my phone so that my boyfriend could see me. I performed the puja, prayed for my boyfriend’s health and prosperity and offered water to the moon. After that we broke out fast together. I must say that I love the idea of worshipping the moon. It is such a distant yet evident form of beauty.

2019 was very kind to us. We got to meet TWICE this year which still after months feels crazy. My trip to Dubai was very important for the both of us, for I got to meet Vivek’s family and friends. Being welcomed by his grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins really made me feel like home immediately. Visiting Vivek’s home also made me feel excitement for the life that awaits me. 

Our second time meeting this year happened in Georgia. This trip was a bit more personal for the both of us, for it was just me and him in an unknown country. Each day is a chance to grow as a person, so each day is an opportunity to grow your relationship aswell. This year we really have grown stronger as a couple but also as each other’s best friends, which I’m very happy about.

Moving in together and starting our life finally together as a couple awaits!

You know how hard it can be to start working on something. Starting this blog was exactly what I had trouble with, but, here we are! 

My name is Alli, I’m 22 years old and I was born and raised in Finland. In 2015 I met an Indian man through a gaming community called Steam, thanks to my little brother in fact. I was new to the community and didn’t have any friends there so I was suggested to add ‘Nero’ because he’s a “cool guy.” And that’s how it all started.

Long distance relationships have become so much more common during the past couple of years in result of the ever-growing world of technology and the countless socializing platforms. The fact that people can now meet their future partner through a video game or a pointless chat forum might seem like a waste to some people, but I like to prove them wrong.
