listen i'm not here to tell you how to live your life nor how to title your novel. but can we please move on from a blank of blank and blank. we have so many a blank of blank and blanks. the shelves are full of a blank of blank and blanks. it's enough. can we do something else now
so I can get this dlc for half price and pay $4.19. OR, if I REALLY wanted to save money, they have a special promotion going on and I can get it for only $5.99! wow!
I don't think people who come from wattpad after the purge and now want ao3 to have its own official app understand that one of the main reasons behind the recent wattpad purge that drove them to ao3 was due to pressure from appstore demanding wattpad to be more strict and follow appstore's policy. wattpad complied in order for its app to be able to remain on appstore. thus the wattpad purge.
ao3 doesn't have an app because for it to have an app, appstore will have to approve it first. and if, hypothetically, ao3 needs appstore to approve it, it will also have to abide by appstore's pro-censorship stance and start banning dark and taboo fics, which is against its own core principle of being completely against censorship.
ao3 doesn't need an app. it works more than fine without an app. the reason ao3 can allow dark and taboo fics, the reason it can allow the most disgusting and shockingly vile fics, and be completely against censorship is because it doesn't need appstore's approval. it stands on its own as a non-profit organization with functioning site and a team of lawyers protecting its platform, its users, and every single fanwork on its platform.
everybody say thank you ao3
here's the list of things you need to know about ao3 if you're new to the platform
AO3 does not, will not, has NEVER had an app. If you think that you found “the ao3 app,” that’s not the ao3 app

Melon collies
I can no longer feel the infinite sadness
also. rewatching haikyuu partially out of love and partially to check if I even still like The Character. which like obviously but it's good to check like hanging out with a friend you haven't gotten to see in a while. anyways I got to the first episode where he shows up and then immediately went out and got a haikyuu tattoo the next day so I think I probably still like him a little bit

everyone seems to be doing quite well
people have this tendency to view the wheel as a benchmark of human development.
and i feel like people forget just how many parts of the world didn't use wheels consistently until the last couple of centuries
like. not because they were "primitive" or hadn't thought to invent it, but because there are terrains and regions where wheels just aren't useful. in deserts. on islands. in places with a lot of bog or heavy snowfall.
in the upper pennines, wheeled carts only came into common use when the coal industry grew in the 18th century and the gravity train was developed. until then, roads were too hard to maintain and most people just used horses, mules, or sleds for heavy transport.
in argyll and the west of scotland, where mountain terrain hits the coast and where the lochs mean that there is a lot of coast, it is much easier to use boats and rafts than to try to transport freight overland. so small freight was similarly carried by livestock or dragged, and only as far as the nearest body of water.
in the southern fens (before they were drained) rafts were more common than carts, usually being dragged over mud and bog rather than floating in deep water.
and it is relevant to note that all of these were in England and Scotland, places which had, on aggregate, been using wheels since the neolithic. none of these places failed to invent the wheel. they just uninvented it. because it was useless. other cultures in broader terrain areas (like the steppes, or the deserts, or the Arctic) may never have invented the wheel at all, bc, like, why would you? it's useless.
and. idk. i think about that a lot when people talk about progress and universal human development. it puts me in mind of a book from the 1860s i read that was like "and those backwards people in subsaharan africa haven't even thought to invent doors! on an unrelated note all the houses we, the Enlightened Whites, build in the area are unbearably hot and full of flies. wonder what that's about." like. wow. you really are just of the belief that the ideal technological development looks the same wherever you are, huh?
The wheel is invented by most human cultures.
They used it for pottery. They used it for children's toys. They used it for spinning thread. They used it to turn a spit while cooking. They attached it to a box with handles and used it to carry supplies to and from the battlefield. They stuck it in water and used it to power a mill. They made it out of rock and spun it to sharpen blades. They made them tiny and put them on necklaces.
The wheel's a very useful device and it got invented for a thousand purposes, some common to many cultures, some limited to just a few.
They didn't use it for transport until they they had roads.
And a lot of terrain does not take well to roads, not without a whole lot of time and money being spent by someone other than local farmers. You need a whole lot of people using the exact same route, over and over, to justify the hassle and expense of building & maintaining a road that's faster to navigate with wheels than by either loading your stuff on a string of donkeys, or dragging it behind them on a blanket stretched between two poles.
They didn't "fail to invent the wheel"; they failed to invent the ox-drawn cart. Because they had nowhere to use it.
You know I'd always just assumed "who killed Tupac" was one of life's mysteries on par with the Lindbergh baby, so I was today years old when I learned that not only is someone actually going on trial for it in the year of our lord 2026 but in fact part of why said guy was arrested is because he wrote a memoir in 2019 where he talked about how he helped kill Tupac
"So tell me, officer. What great police work led to making an arrest in this case, more than twenty five years after one of the country's most famous murders?"
"Well the guy wrote about it in his memoir."
"I see."
"And also did a press tour."
this is destroying me

there are controversial foods I like where I’m like “yeah I get it. this isn’t for everyone”
and then there are some where I’m more “our tongue-to-brain setup must literally be wired differently because wtf are you talking about”
i think we're exact opposites, because i looove oatmeal raisin cookies, mushrooms, and meat fat
no im saying i like all of them.
category 1 is “I enjoy eating this, but understand why someone else wouldn’t”
category 2 is “this tastes objectively good. therefore our actual perceptions of reality must be different.”
yet another haikyuu rewatch and this poster in sakanoshita during s1e7 haunts me. I can't get a clear enough shot of it to be able to read most of it but what I CAN read translates to something like "face your dreams and devote yourself"??? but now this rewatch is dedicated to trying to find a clearer shot so I can read the rest. obviously it's not a poster for current karasuno since them getting any sort of decent posters at all is, like, a plot point, so I wonder if this is a poster ukai's kept from back in the day. perhaps I'll go through the manga to see if the poster is there in the manga, since it might be more legible in black and white.
