I don't have words. People harassed Syundei (mangaka of Go For It, Nakamura-kun!! and Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart) so much for her work that she deleted her twitter. She's been quietly existing, occasionally posting art, enjoying things like Cult of the Lamb and sometimes making fanart, and seemed to be enjoying the anime adaptation of her work as it released, and folks who don't like her work and could have just moved on with their lives have been so shitty about her creative freedom that she has deleted her twitter.
The original Japanese post from Syundei:
Ganbare is pretty damn chaste. It's what a lot of people claim to want. It has been held up as a beloved story in the community for years. And folks treat the person who made it like this. Folks who claim that the more "wholesome" anime is "better" think harassing the real person who made the thing in the first place is a great idea and aligns so well with the "wholesome" "ideal".
Syundei has health problems that make it harder to work, and that's why volume 3 of Ganbare hasn't released yet. And now this stuff, in a time Syundei should have been happily celebrating a great achievement.
Plenty of folks are new to BL and the anime is likely their first step in the genre, and that's fine, everyone has to start somewhere. But rather than insisting you know everything about the genre and what it is or should be (which many people have done with both this and The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter and Heated Rivalry and basically every recent popular m/m thing) and seeing something you don't like and insisting it shouldn't exist, maybe avoid it and look for other things. Not all art is for you. There is plenty out there for you to try if you like instead of harassing one person who makes stuff you don't.
This isn't the first time Syundei has nuked her accounts, so she might be back. But things are a bit different in 2026 than they were in ~2019. Obviously toxicity existed then, but it's been particularly vitriolic lately.
One way to send words of support is through the Japanese site for the manga. If you go to the orange button that says ファンレターを送る | "Send a fan letter", and follow the instructions in the link, that should get to Syundei. Contacting Seven Seas, who publishes some of her works in English, to ask that they communicate words of encouragement might also help. And maybe, if you haven't already, buy a copy of Syundei's books to support her:
Go For It, Nakamura-kun!! Volume 1 and Volume 2
Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart
Fans have also started a tag to post supportive messages on twitter.
Update: If your response to this post is "fuck BL fans", fuck you. Most of the people stirring up shit about the manga aren't BL fans anyway. And I don't say that as "no real BL fan would do this". I repeatedly see people who criticize the manga state they don't read BL.
On April 22, 2026, HERO'S Web, who currently have the digital Japanese license for the manga, released this, with a statement from Syundei:
English machine translation: "We received a message from [Syundei]. The message is as follows:
In episode 5 of the TV anime "Ganbare! Nakamura-kun!!", there is a scene where a teacher and a student exchange personal contact information. However, this is merely a suggestive expression within the context of BL (Boys' Love), and has no meaning beyond that. Neither the author nor the anime production team recommends teachers and students exchanging personal contact information. The author requested that the relationship between Otogiri and Hirose not be portrayed too closely, and that it be depicted with the awareness that it is a teacher-student relationship. The author also requested that depictions that sexually exploit female students or female characters be avoided, and that vulgar depictions from the original work be omitted from the anime as much as possible, and that they be modified to be viewable by anyone. The production team has upheld these wishes. Furthermore, the author has previously created several works in the BL genre featuring pairings with a significant age difference or pairings between adults and minors, such as teachers and students. However, considering the recent increase in horrific crimes committed by adults against minors, the author will not use this as a theme in the future. We ask for your understanding. And if anyone who has already read the original work was offended, we sincerely apologize."
It's a shame that weirdos who can't separate fiction from reality pressured these people into making this statement, and likely made Syundei think this was the only choice. Syundei's been harassed for many years for her work, and knowing an anime adaptation would open the door to an even larger audience likely made an already traumatic situation more worrisome, hence the request. I hope wherever Syundei is, and whatever Syundei is doing, she's happier.
Also for folks who are worried about the future of the manga and anime: Volume 3 has been in limbo for over a year due to Syundei's health problems. And being off of socmed, even with messages like Syundei left, does not mean Syundei won't someday make/complete Volume 3 and release it. We don't know, as there's been no communication from Syundei that I know of since this. Hopefully the break from socmed will help, and given how much Syundei loves this story and art in general, I hope Syundei can keep going with it if Syundei wants to. As for the anime: it is unlikely to be affected. The whole thing is already made and is nearly completely aired, the DVD/blu-rays have been announced, there are already merch announcements (and more keep coming out, and a lot of contracts with different people are in place. I don't know how involved with the project Syundei was, but it's not normal for mangaka to have leadership roles in anime adaptations of their works. Usually they sign off on the work being adapted, and are sometimes brought in as consultants, to okay this or that change/choice or offer recommendations/answer questions, and sometimes they'll draw extra art for things or participate in events. I doubt, given the way the anime industry works, that anything will change with the anime's release.
