His father left him and his mother when he was around 8 or 9 years old
Martin's mother hates him because he apparently looks just like his father (he found out this information due to his evil overlord boss telling him all of this, since he can read minds), and treats him TERRIBLY
Even though Martin's mother treats him like shit, he STILL dropped out of school when he was 17 in order to take care of her because she became ill (? or her chronic illness got worse? Something like that).
He ends up working for The Magnus Institute, which deals with researching and archiving stories of people's experiences with the paranormal because he couldn't get a job anywhere else (he actually lied on his CV to get this job)
He ends up working in the archives...he cannot quit working in the archives, no matter how much he wants to.
At one point, he gets trapped in his apartment for like...2 weeks, by a horror entity lady and her many...MANY worms. So many worms. And no one checked on him because he had dropped his phone, and the entity had been texting Martin's coworkers that he was just ill.
Martin is way too nice for all of the awful shit that happens to him (and I haven't even finished TMA, so I don't even know all of it)
Falls for his (not evil) boss (this guy is still mean to him for, like, the entire first season though, and Martin STILL fell for the guy 😭😭😭)
