a five foot pygmy tyrant

like supergirl gets kinda of roped into a hero's journey. which is wonderful. she is in a funk and depression because she lost her family and world. she is insular in wanting to be alone except be with krypto. so on one of her binge's to forget her life she meets ruthye who has also brutally lost her family and is seeking justice. kara ignores the call to adventure, a perfect opening to help ruthye because she is satisfied with the status quo with krypto

kara realises that ruthye's enemy is the same that stole her ship and poisoned krypto given her the mcguffin of 3 days to track and get the antidote. she still doesn't want to help ruthye so it is like a unwilling babysitter who starts to see ruthye as a younger her

ruthye's parents and brother (omg they did the brother's death so weird, like you weren't even introduced to his sibling relationship he was like killed in a blink and you miss it) were killed by the brigands who were there for ruthye's fathers swords - again it is never shown that the swords are special. like they aren't shown to cut through whatever but again disregard my edits on the script

WE NEVER SEE RUTHYE SWORD FIGHT. biggest waste. or even showing her having an aptitude for metal working. she is treated like she's supergirl's escort mission. like protect the package. like fine. but i would have preferred that she have more agency considering that she has so much used potential. i feel like if a woman directed you would have gotten that. to be fair, ruthye has a scene were she is in a fight and wins but the scene is cluncky because like it's a prison escape where lobo is like taking credit for the escape while she did the work.

the movie doesn't let you sit in the scene so there is a lot of abrupt pin drops to songs that feel like warner brothers producers shoehorned them in since the genre is always jumping around. it would have been better to establish that kara liked alt-rock and pop hits as she got used to earth but no they don't even really explain why the alien planet bar is playing the girl from ipanema or an ella fitzgerald's cheek to cheek. like there is just a lack of musical direction in the film. like it feels like they didn't trust the score and were just adding songs in with no through line for coherency to the theme or pacing of the film

the third plot of the film after kara getting the antidote and ruthye avenging her family is the one of the brigands' being sex traffickers or at least they steal girls and use them to breed their next generation of all male brigands. it's the most clunky plot since none of the girls have agency in the film or have the camera focus on them so any of their faces are memorable. the emotional arc of that story is like kara and ruthye fighting over the death of a family who was killed by the brigands and of course it is the only black characters and it is like it could have been better. like if you have a trafficking subplot, we aren't really allowed to sit in it and realise that yeah kara you should care about this and not just because of your dog. so that scene was terribly edited.

there are female space pirates! do we get to know their names or even just spend more time with them? no, but god we got them and it was great

the film makes me yearn for another cut. like a non-craig gillespie cut. i feel like he got tapped because he did cruella and i am like why was he the choice???

anyway, the fight scenes also were so tightly shot that it was hard to see the choreography and feel the stakes.

i liked the film but i am also disappointed that it feels like supergirl could have been great and it was a good film, better than most marvel films but also felt like producers were very heavy handed with script notes to push mass appeal. like even the into and end credits were like standard text on a screen. and in the age where we could do something fun and call back to the history of supergirl i feel like the director was not a fan of supergirl and was just doing cruella 2.0 but in space and i feel like another director would have been better to make supergirl shine bright

like go see the film. it's great. i want more female-lead films and this film is good. it could be better and we can only get better films if we support these films rather than shit on them

if i saw this when i was 10, god, supergirl would be my new obsession. so girls need female heroes. just get a female director, pls. because it feels like warner brothers didnt want to make this movie and i see it in the post-production.

stand out stars are milly and eve. like hat's off to their performances. they were giving it their all. the plot is good. but god, the direction and editing fumbled which for another male led film would be fine because it's a drop in the bucket to male lead films. supergirl has so much expectation since big studios are rarely letting them get made.
