Random question, but do you have any black metal band recommendations?
Agalloch
Probably my favourite of all times. Very atmospheric, deeply meditative and soft-soundig. Best combo of dark folk and black metal. Check out their albums: Ashes Against The Grain and The Mantle.
Katatonia
Started as black metal but evolved into doom/ progressive metal. Very nostalgic and melodic. I actually don't like their 'full black metal' phase so much, but rather the genre mix they made after. Dead End Kings, The Great Cold Distance, Mnemosynean and Viva Emptiness are my most listened albums.
Lifelover
Black metal and post-punk. Nothing too interesting going on sound-wise, but it's on my list because it's worth it. They're basically like The Cure of black metal with dark lyrics and relatively optimistic/ typical punk-energy sound. Pulver and Erotik are the two albums that stick out the most to me.
Immortal
With Immortal it's quite funny. If you manage to tune out the frog vocals in your head and pay attention to what's going on with the instrumental, it's really awesome. The guitar and the drums are always in an epic competition to outrun each other. That's probably the biggest reason why Immortal is so good. Blasting beats and shredding solo/ progressive riffs.
At The Heart Of Winter, Sons Of Northern Darkness and All Shall Fall (the last one here is Demonaz's latest album and it sounds just like you would expect a bm band to sound back in the day.. which is hard to achieve in the present, so kudos to him)
That's kinda all the black metal stuff that I listen to/ I've kept listening to through time. Not so many bands, but cool bands nevertheless. I could add Burzum of course since it has been an influence for me, but that's quite obvious and you're probably looking for new stuff to listen to, so. Emperor was also good, but I haven't listened to it in years so I don't remember much of that Emperor era I had in school lol.
Hope you find something new and cool on this list!
