i played something in itunes for the first time in years and kept finding myself trying to use qlab control keys
My current show is filled with words I have never and will never say in my life. There are a couple F and R slurs, and countless uses of the N word.
I know that this is something actors have to deal with but I think the way many of them get around it is, āwell, this is the character saying these words but itās not me.ā However Iām not an actor. And when someone calls line, itās me who answers, not the character.
This is a question Iāve faced a couple times before but never actually had to figure out the answer because they never got it wrong. But in this script... itās a LOT. Thereās an entire scene where one character is trying to coax another into saying the N word. I feel very confident that I will need to give at least one line note that includes this word, because itās very prevalent.
So how do I handle it? Both for when an actor calls line, and for taking line notes. Do I say/write the full word because itās what the script says even though it the idea of using the word really upsets me? Or do I say/write āN wordā even though itās not what the script says?
A few weeks ago I was warned there has been a pest problem at this theatre so to keep food covered.
I just walked in my door after a half hour drive home after a 10 hour day at work... and remembered that there is an open box of donuts (THREE DONUTS) sitting in the theatre.
My options are either a) spend another hour driving back to throw them out or b) donāt do that, and deal with the consequences tomorrow.
I seriously want to cry right now.

Q2Q Comics #326: Who Are We HoldingĀ For?
Experimenting with the camera on my new phone at work today
I love these so much!
I went to go see my boyfriend's show tonight and was seated next to the former director of artistic programming, who left at the end of last season to go to a different theatre in a different city. We didn't attend the show together but we were both getting comps so we ended up splitting a pair of seats.
As we were reseating for act 3, the (rather chatty) patron seated on the other side of him leaned over and asked, "so, are you a subscriber?" to which he replied truthfully, "no I am not." The lights started to dim and I heard the other guy say (like trying to convince him to get a subscription) "oh man, it's such a good season this year."
I wish this exchange had happened thirty seconds earlier so I could see the look on the DAP's face... the guy who planned the season being urged to subscribe by some random patron because the season is just so good! It was too funny.
Dad: can you measure the family room and send me a diagram so I can send it to the carpet people?

Shoutout to playwright John Maclay for this gem of a stage direction.Ā

During table work last night, a pair of actors was working on a scene. One of them has a question about the other personās line. NotĀ āwhat does this mean/how should it be readā butĀ āhow does your line affect my characterā sort of thing. When she stopped to ask about it she tried to make it clear that sheās not trying to get in the other actorās business and not trying to solve the line for him. So she said, āIām not trying to climb in your garden and hump your lawn gnome.ā
I went with worked. The third was long enough that it put me over my word count.
Working! Duh. Thanks! (I separate my bio credits into SM, ASM, and crew without necessarily specifying what exactly crew means)
Writing a bio. Itās not my first show at this theatre but itās the first one Iām seeing to completion. Did a show there last year but I was only the rehearsal SM and I left the week before tech. How do I put that in my bio?
KD returns to [theatre] after last yearās Harvey.Ā Too simplistic.
KD returns to [theatre] after previously stage managing Harvey. Not fully true.
KD returns to [theatre] where she was previously the rehearsal stage manager for Harvey. Omg shut up nobody asked for your life story.
I guess the second one is probably best but I feel like itās a little bit of a lie, you know? Hmm.
Inktober #9 and #10
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL STAG(E) MANAGEMENT DAY!
Featuring this dude, from last year:Ā https://unexpectedtexture.tumblr.com/image/130930844923
Iāve decided his name is Ira, heās working towards his Equity membership and he is very fond of Star-Bucks. Get it? Star-BUCKS?! ā¦..Iāll see myself out. Feel free to reply with more deer related puns or suggestions about what the other technical areas would be as animals.
Iām āfawnedā of these drawings
How about Sound Bear? Could that be a thing?
Weāre more like Sound Hounds⦠we stay cooped up in our booths until someone unlocks the Gates.
HAPPY STAG MANAGERāS DAY! Or happy BELATED stag managerās day! Try not to toot your own horns too much

Looks like I'm keeping my cookies! Both wrong. I've worked with them both before (but Brian only once and it was in 2012) but neither this season! Granted I don't yet know who's designing my 5th show so it could be one of them...
I mean⦠there are also companies reaching out to me who I turn down because I am not interested. But thereās one company that asked me last week about two upcoming shows (including one that I LOVE and am really bummed to have to turn down)⦠Iām definitely interested! Just not available. But thereās a little part of me that worries about turning down offers⦠because if I turn it down they will move on to the next person on their list. And that person says yes and if that person is a good fit they will be invited back which means Iāve been bumped down the list. I realize itās irrational but thatās my fear. So for this one company in particular, I wanted to invite them to keep me in mind in the future⦠and I hope that whoever they ask after me doesnāt end up being such a good fit for them that they stick only with that person and never invite me back. Which is horrible of me. I want everyone to be successful! But I just donāt want other peopleās success to mean doors have closed for me hahaha
Honestly I have the same fear and itās why thereās like two or three companies Iām trying to lock down tight and early to design with, and only one has actually sent anything back yet. And if I donāt hear back, then I usually end up padding my schedule with more ME work.
That said, I definitely understand both wanting to be successful but also wanting everyone to have work. Generally what Iāve seen with the folks here in DC is theyāre really understanding: A lot of companies will recognize that they didnāt book you early enough and maybe theyāll learn from it⦠or they wonāt. And a lot of people also understand that a lot of companies and directors have their preferences and that makes their choices fluid, and therefore not everyone always gets their first picks or dream teams.Ā
And thereāsā¦not much that can guarantee theyāll hire someone and not discover is a fantastic fit for them. But I guess thatās the nature of the community is we learn to find the people who we work with consistently?
You said it more clearly than I did #2amtumblring. Honestly, work is work is work and I will always find projects to fill my time. There are plenty of jobs available to me and I'm lucky enough to be getting to the point where I have options and I no longer need to accept whatever offer I get because I'm not sure when the next will come along. It's awesome when the work I take can also be something I WANT whether that's a show I'm interested in or people I like to work with or a company I've been wanting to get in with. All that stuff is bonus.
