They are very much in love and deeply so! (also Adrian strongly believed that Rocky would come back and never wanted someone to replace him in their life)
What they have is not just an infatuation, but a strong mutual desire to care for each other. They balance each other out really well, since they have very complementary personalities.
Where Rocky is extroverted, temperamental and kind of a chatterbox, they're a soothing balm of a personality. Calm, patient and very good at rubberducking others through their emotional problems - something Rocky needs sometimes, as he has a bad habit of burying those under new projects and tasks of all kinds, but he is also highly analytical and can often figure himself out with minimal prompting at the right times.
Adrian is a very quiet eridian and doesn't speak much, they think a lot and deeply about things and tend to get very stuck in their own mind sometimes, so when they do add something to a conversation, it's often well thought out and profound. Their quietness tends to intimidate more extroverted eridians when they don't know each other well, but Adrian is honestly happy to just sit and listen. Rocky was always the more social one for both of them, so they worked out very nicely in that regard. He will do the talking and they just sit there, happily being a passive part of it and cutting in wherever they have something worthwhile to say.
What really gets them out of their shell is their field of work - ecology. They're a super passionate nerd about it, from the weather to the flora and fauna on Erid... They could spend hours talking about the different biomes and everything they entail, as well as their studies on the subject.
I think initially when meeting Grace, they're their usual quiet self and Grace takes this as them not liking him - but as soon as they actually find overlap in the topic of biology there's almost no stopping the yap-fest that unleashes LMAO. Grace is deeply curious about life on Erid and very eager to learn, while also more than happy to satisfy Adrian's curiosity about Earth in turn - they get along SWIMMINGLY.
it's also worth noting that Adrian is primarily in charge of the biodome!
