like mother, like daughter | TRSB 2025 collaboration with @lendmyboyfriendahand!
A queen has to protect her people first, regardless of her duties as a mother. Nimloth and Elwing both understand this, and do what they can to protect their children anyway.

I have a question for people more knowledgable than me: First, Littleheart is, in a way, Voronwë's son that has of course been removed from general canon. But I'm wondering right now if it wouldn't be interesting and honestly just really cute to keep Littleheart as a sibling to EÀrendil in a Tuor/Idril/Voronwë constellation...but I have literally NEVER seen that, so I'm wondering if there is a reason beyond Littleheart's general irrelevance and anonymity that keeps this from being a more common idea?
Ulmo saving Elwing
The pity in Ulmoâs eyes is what touched me here, and Elwing is so small in the palm of his hand. This event happened after the Third Kinslaying. Elwing took the silmaril and cast herself over a cliff into the sea rather than let it fall into the hands of the FĂ«anorians. Ulmo rescued her from the waves and turned her into a seabird. She then flew to her husband who was sailing to Valinor.Â

Update: artist found: motherofbees This image is posted unsourced on the lotr wiki, which is where I found it, and any search for âUlmo saving Elwingâ led to more uncited images. It can be very difficult to find the source of an image. However, I always search for the artist, and I could not find any mention of the artist of this work. If it wasnât for someoneâs reblog comment, I never would have found it. Thank you!)

I really donât want to open this can of worms because Tumblr hath no fury like people called out on their political performativeness but it is literally driving me up the wall to watch people react to Serkisâ âkeep Tolkien whiteâ commentary by insisting twice as hard that Tolkien would descend down to earth and dropkick the entire Republican party to hell or whatever, just because they want to ensure that a piece of media they enjoy isnât seen as being morally impure. Case in point: I have seen at least five instances of Tolkienâs âI hate apartheidâ valedictorian address being used as a âcounterâ to Serkis being racist, including by actual news outlets.
Except itâs only ever the âI hate apartheidâ line thatâs shared, and not the actual quote in its full context. Because here it is:
If we consider what Merton College and what the Oxford School of English owes to the Antipodes, to the Southern Hemisphere, especially to scholars born in Australia and New Zealand, it may well be felt that it is only just that one of them should now ascend an Oxford chair of English. Indeed it may be thought that justice has been delayed since 1925. There are of course other lands under the Southern Cross. I was born in one; though I do not claim to be the most learned of those who have come hither from the far end of the Dark Continent. But I have the hatred of apartheid in my bones; and most of all I detest the segregation or separation of Language and Literature. I do not care which of them you think White.
Which is to say. This isnât exactly the antiracist quote of the century, to say the least. This is a white South Africa born man and a white Australian shaking hands and going âomg we relateâ and expressing what is a very, very mild âsegregation is not greatâ opinion in order to convey his thoughts on an academic subject, ie the confluence of language and literature. Using race to make a point about his own subject of interest, in his own interest, which is, amusingly enough, what a lot of ostensibly well meaning progressive seem to be doing.
I also think that some of the general surprise around âwhat do you mean large swathes of the Tolkien fandom are incredibly conservative!?â in lib/left Tolkien fandom is the result of a tendency in said parts of the fandom to transpose oneâs own progressiveness onto Tolkien and turn a blind eye to things like, say, the Shire being a very specifically mid-century British racist construct that is very, very clear in its politics, often going so far as to insist itâs anarchist or an ideal society or whatever the fuck⊠and then getting really Pikachu-meme âbut theyâre misreading itâ every single time a conservative explains exactly what it is about the legendarium that they really love, and get surprised when someone uses the Shire being a racist construct to do more racism. It is 2026 let us do away with âI donât see colourâ interpretations of media, I beg. Nobody is cancelling you for enjoying a book that is not kind to race. Most of the books I love are not kind to race.
I do think there's a striking and interesting difference between how the legacy of two Elf& Men couples: Beren & LĂșthien and Tuor & Idril were remembered in-universe or defined by Tolkien. Tuor has another name, Eladar, Starfather (The War of Jewels), clearly referring to his fatherhood of EĂ€rendil. It sounds like a name given to him afterwards. In Shibboleth of FĂ«anor, it's said, "but Itaril had a great destiny, for she was the mother of Ardamir EĂ€rendil." It suggests to me that in the history of Arda they were primarily remembered as the parents of EĂ€rendil, two people giving birth to (literally and spiritually via their actions in the Fall of Gondolin) the star of hope. Whereas Beren and LĂșthien were always remembered by their own tale of getting the Silmarils and being released from Mandos, etc.

thank you @ecofutural for tagging me to post a WIP!! I've actually never posted any of my writing on tumblr aah... but I don't have any silm art in the works because its art fight season!!! this is an excerpt from a short story I've been trying to write for some time about an outsider POV on finrod and bëor...
One youth whom I knew from dinner sat down on the mat next to me. âWÉáž„iz,â he said, shaking his head. âOur Balan is no Lord, he is a hero of legend. It is clear you donât know about his deeds yet.â This elicited excited nodding in the group, though I noted some of them grinning and nudging each other with their elbows, already in on the joke. âDid you know,â my acquaintance went on, âthat Balan is so fast, he once won a race against a wolf?â Everyone cheered at this in low tones, as if they did not want the people still outside on the street to know we were still awake. âOh,â another piped up. âBut, did you know that Balan is so strong, that once, when he needed a new cloak, he wrestled a bear for his hide?â Cheering again. I recalled the bear pelt draped over Balanâs chair. âAhh,â a third dramatically sighed. The entire performance seemed like a rehearsed initiation, repeated with great joy and amusement countless times before. Everyone seemed to anticipate this last installment. âBut dear stranger," again a break for dramatic effect. "Are you even aware that Balan is so wise, he once bedded a snake?â At this, the room erupted in hushed laughter. I myself felt confused. It didnât really seem like they were mocking him. There was a genuine awe in their voices. But I could sense some sort of strange energy in the air. Insecurity, jealousy, one of those feelings young men are prone to. They were scared of him and admired him at the same time - they wanted what he had, wanted to be how he was. Eventually it would tip entirely into the negative.
im tagging ehmmm... unofficially all of my 30 followers because this sideblog is still in the baby stages and im not too sure who I'm mutuals with exactly on this blog, but PLEASEE everyone show me what you're working on!!
