Mike Wheelered so hard I (but mostly the other person) predicted the entire plot of Stranger Things in a "what if telekinesis was just an electromagnetic phenomenon" discussion with my childhood best friend at the ripe age of 8

Will Byers, a can only gay character taking off his belt to stop the leaky pipe in the bathroom named Dick by another queer character while he frantically holds the leaky pipe together with his crush as the water explodes regardless was never symbolism for anything btw

Before I continue, I will explicitly mention that I don't support AI in creative spaces and have not finished reading Super Soaker. I did end up reading the author's apologies and clarifications on the discourse, and had read around five of the beginning chapters before the controversy even started. I stopped reading because I didn't like how much Mike and Will used substances, but my personal preferences can not decide whether an author deserves to write or not.
Read further if you want details on the Super Soaker controversy:
Let's clear up the doubts first. Many people claim that Super Soaker was either mostly or completely written by AI, which is utter bullshit. Anyone who says that is either misinformed, or stirring stuff up for more clout. According to WheezingWheeler, the AI used in the fanfiction was used for grammar checks and correct phrasing. Kind of like Grammarly. I will note that this could be false, but it seems highly unlikely as when I was reading it, even though I wasn't the biggest fan of the writing style, it showed none of the AI tells and felt very authentic. However, I did not run the work through an AI checker, and recommend you don't either, because:
They are inaccurate most of the time.
They feed your writing to AIs to train them, and doing so to anyone's work is just plain disrespectful.
Next, let's look at motives. Why would an author want to use AI for a byler fanfic on ao3, for FREE, targeted to a notoriously anti AI community? Well, my friend, if you haven't figured out the answer yet, you must be a native speaker. As someone with English as their third language, I struggled to speak and write it for years. Even though I read English books like a psychopath, it's not enough for me to express all the ideas in my head in a grammatically correct manner. I often relied on grammar AIs to write English well, and they ended up significantly improving my writing. People may not agree with AI grammar checkers, but not everyone grew up privileged to have English as their first and only language, or teachers that could help them enough.
I will say, though the hate is far to extreme for someone literally just trying to improve their grammar, the author did make a mistake by not disclosing this before. I do not use AI to check my grammar anymore, but during the times that I did, I honestly had no idea that people were against it. I think WheezingWheeler found themself in a similar situation, where they were completely oblivious to what people think about any percentage of AI in the work. This is where their problem is, since every creator has a duty to disclose any topics that people may not be comfortable with. Just as fics have trigger warnings before you even open them, AI use of any kind should be disclosed of in the very first chapter. Though I wish the author had done this in the first place, I am glad they apologised for it.
That said, please do not bully or threaten the author or their loved ones for an honest mistake. As much as people are twisting it to mean otherwise, there is a real human typing words behind that screen. Humans make mistakes. I admit that I used AI in my writing, but literally never with malicious intent, only to correct grammar mistakes and improve my English. I do not use it anymore, but if this bothers you, you can ignore, unfollow, or block me. Please don't threaten and send hate to people you don't know, especially when they apologise. Just because you got taught good English grammar, or just don't care about it, doesn't mean some of us don't want to write seriously and not have access to the right learning environment. I have learnt my lesson, and I'm sure the author has, too. We will find better means to learn the language, but attacking people is completely unhelpful.
I will agree that wheezingwheeler did not deserve hate mail in terms of death threats or violence. BUT she DOES deserve scrutiny and to be called out for it. Why is the fandom so intent on sweeping criticism under a rug? Itâs crazy to me that people are so willing to take her word for it when she lied about it before, and when there IS PROOF that she used AI and not in a pattern consistent with mere âgrammar fixingâ (more on that later) we need to get more comfortable sitting with the discomfort of fair and equitable scrutiny. No, I will not condone or incite violence but civil discourse and reprimand is sometimes necessary, especially when there is no other way to police this. I do not want to accept any amount of ai use in creative spaces, and so I wonât stay quiet about it.
I for one, do not readily believe wheezingwheelerâs explanation, and hereâs why:
- It took her a long time to address this and she did it in a way that gives her a chance to minimize and polish her impact
- Her apology came out on the same day as a fic sheâs known to be competitive about updates
- She didnât update her tags to say something like âai assistedâ after unhiding her hidden work
- She didnât solicit a beta reader when her fic was so popular that she could have easily found someone (one of her friends/mutuals perhaps) to check grammar
- She didnât start using the âgrammarâ checker until after chapter 6
- Claude artifacts in question are used irregularly. If you are checking grammar you donât suddenly decide to use a checker on random chapters. The pattern is not consistent with someone looking to check grammar for their entire fic because they are insecure about their grasp of the English language
- She reposted instead of deleting the story completely which is inconsistent with the claim that she âlearned her lessonâ. She ghosted all her accounts and turned comments off, cementing her claim as the number 3 byler fic on ao3 with no way to respond, reprimand, or demand accountability. Itâs convenient when her statement gets to stand as the last word. So we are left with only the option of calling her out on fan spaces and educating each other
- Her initial dishonesty about Ai use doesnât give me any reason to trust her now. And it doesnât seem like an honest mistake when you lie about it, knowing that itâs frowned upon to use Ai.
Iâll also address the fallacies present in OPâs argument:
- Just because you canât think of a reason for a fanfic writer to use ai doesnât mean there isnât one. (And I can think of several!)
- Claude artifacts in the coding didnât show up in the fic until after the point Op stopped reading.
- Not everyone is claiming that it was entirely written by ai. In fact all the claims I have seen are that there were over 500 instances of copy/pasted Claude artifacts in the entire fic, which is verifiable. I went and looked at the html code myself and searched âClaudeâ in the finder and found that claim to be correct.
- Checking the code of an internet page html is NOT the same as running the fic through an ai checker, do your homework.
- Iâll state it again because OP was very passionate about the point that English as a second or third language writers need ai grammar checkers to improve their English: you do not need to run your fic through an ai grammar checker when the fandom is full to the brim with creatives willing to SPAG read for you for free, and organically. Also, if fanfic is a labor of love as OP claimed, I promise you donât need to have a perfect grammatically correct fic to post. Hell, Iâve been in fandom for years and had mutuals beta check my work and STILL miss errors but itâs not the end of the world. Iâve even attempted to write characters in a variant of my language that I am not a native speaker of, and asked mutuals from that country to âbritpickâ my work. It feels so much better to say I did something myself and didnât resort to ai, which is unethical, bad for the environment, and the death of creativity and critical thinking. Iâve read so much amazing fic from authors who donât have English as a first language and itâs not always perfect or translated exactly to fit english customs or colloquialisms, but itâs still beautiful as it is.
- âAttacking people is completely unhelpfulâ it IS helpful to be critical if itâs to call out bad behavior and to make it clear that we as a fandom wonât merely perform outrage and then quickly sweep it under the rug.
Hello! I just want to say thank you for mentioning anything that was previously missing from my post. I was not aware of the fact that Wheezingwheeler was using Claude. This definitely changes things, as dishonesty is an unforgivable offense. I apologise for spreading any misinformation in the first post, as that was not my intention, so I want to correct it.
However, I would like to say that when I asked why any Ao3 author would want to use AI in their work, that was a rhetorical question. I quite literally reasons for why someone would use AI while writing fanfiction in the very next sentence (and, of course, I can think of countless reasons why someone would feel insecure posting about their own mind), but I mostly agree with your critique other than that. One of the main things about writing is that it requires honesty. The best work I have ever written has always been about my own honest, human experiences. To be dishonest about how you think is to destroy how you write.
Before the clarification, I had taken Wheezingwheeler's words at face value. At first, I really did sympathise with her. This next part addresses your next critique that I believe is a misunderstanding. Non-native speakers do not need grammar AIs to improve their grammar. I was simply stating that it is often highly encouraged to use by our peers and even teachers, as most people are oblivious to the dangers of using AI as a crutch. This is one the things that inspired me to beta reading people's work for free, actually. I mentioned in my post that I do not use AI grammar checkers anymore, and that is not because I suddenly became some grammar god, but because I realised that it was harmful in the long run. My point isn't that people need AI to learn English, it is that people don't know that it could harm them.
Obviously, you checking out the html version and finding AI written sections changes things. Also, I said nothing about checking the html version being equivalent to running it through an AI checker. I simply discouraged people from running it through AI checkers as I have seen many people do so without people's consent. If you find anything in the code itself, that truly is a different thing, but I believe that you are taking my words out of context here. So, taking your advice anyway, I decided to "grow up" and write this for clarification.
Finally, critique and hate are two very different things. I encourage critique. Go talk about it, spread awareness, and make sure more people are aware of the dangers. However, since the author has claimed that she and her close friends were recieving threats, I had to speak up about it. Hate does not solve any problems, and targeting people around her instead of critiquing the writing is us losing the point.
If you need any clarification on my points, or believe that any of my arguements are incorrect, please don't hesitate to point them out. I really don't mind criticism, and this was just me addressing any of the critiques that don't quite make sense to me. I really am delighted that you read through all of my writing and decided to give constructive criticism on such a sensitive topic. I apologise if I seemed offensive or even defensive, as that was not my intention, but is my fault regardless.

Hey! How are you doing? Btw, I'm Evalogen and I just read your fic "Plastic Byers" and here's my feedback:^-^
Okay I really loved this one The way you wove Will's art into his emotional world just hit different primary colors as this quiet compromise between him and Mike green as new beginnings? So good it made his internal conflict feel so tangible without being heavy handed and the fake dating plot actually worked because it was driven by Will's empathy not just convenience which made it feel so much more genuine
I had a question was Jennifer's comment about Will using too many primary colors meant to mirror how he sees his relationships? Or was it more just about his actual art style? I'm really curious about your thought process there
Uh, hi, glad you're asking!
It was mostly a mixture of both things, with some of my personal experiences sprinkled in. I have a habit of not using a lot of colours to "save" it because my parents never really bought me art supplies. They saw it the same way a girl might ask for a Barbie. Even though Joyce is much more supportive of Will's artistic endeavours, he would likely grow up the same way because of his household finances.
The emotional relationship part is also inspired by my personal experiences, as purple was my favourite colour for a long time because it was a mixture of pink, my favourite colour, and blue, my childhood best friend's favourite colour. I think she was the first and only person I may have fallen in love with. Whether platonically or romantically, our relationship transcended the rules of friendship and romance. Byler often reminds me of her, so I wrote that in since yellow is Will's colour, and blue is Mike's.
Finally, if you look at most pop art, it uses a lot of bright primary colours. Colours that anyone can process. As cool as that is, I wanted to show that Will should learn how to use colours in other genres, too. Sticking to familiarity can be dangerous. I wanted to show the reasoning for why Will went to New York, and what inspired him to leave his hometown or even an opportunity to live in Montauk, which would have let him be close to his family. I wanted to show how Will Byers grew to be the strong person he is today.
